First Congregational Church Moves Services To Senior Center
While repair work and carpet installation take place at the First
Congregational Church, 24 Main Street, Pittsfield, the regular 10
a.m. services will be held at an alternate location -- Pittsfield’s
“Senior Center” at the Community Center, for Sundays, August 17 and
24. The entrance is at the lower level on Broadway, around the
corner from the main Community Center entrance at 74 Main Street.
Parking will be permitted on Broadway, Main Street and at the Town
Hall.
This alternate location is perfect for the services as the center
was where the congregation first met 225 years ago.
During the weeks from August 11 through August 30, the church will
not be available for other activities. Please join us any Sunday at
10 a.m. and watch for more information in The Sun about the church’s
225th anniversary celebration events coming in the next few months.

Letter to the Editor
I have to take exception to some of the “facts” included in the July
30 article Skin Breathing, which was essentially an advertisement
for the Sage Wellness Center. Most of the information in the article
was accurate, but being a stickler for fact, I have to correct some
glaring errors, reflected in the title itself. The skin does not
breathe. It does not absorb oxygen and nutrients. Frogs, with their
thin moist skin and cutaneous capillary networks DO use the skin to
absorb oxygen. We, however, have a relatively thick epidermis
composed of tightly pack dead cells, with no capillaries at all
within it. Also, there are no nerve receptors sensitive
to light, so it does not sense light. Finally, the amount of carbon
dioxide it excretes in sweat is insignificant compared to the amount
released by the lungs. So, yes, it is living tissue with an amazing
capacity for the sense of touch, and is crucial for protection from
infection, but to describe it as a “third lung” is way off.
I realize these are but a small portion of an otherwise good article
about the skin, and any first semester A&P (anatomy & physiology)
student can spot these mistakes. But most people do not take A&P,
unfortunately, and these errors are in the first paragraph, so I
thought they deserved correcting.

Communication In Pittsfield
What would it look like to have accessible and effective
communication in Pittsfield, including between community and the
schools?
Over the course of three months in the summer of 2013, a group of
ten community members worked together to conduct community-based
research on the issue of communication and information sharing in
Pittsfield. This Action Committee worked with the support and
facilitation of Pittsfield Listens.
Key solutions include new community bulletin boards around town,
suggestions for existing groups to help with their communication
goals, and an online neighborhood forum called Nextdoor Pittsfield.
Nextdoor Pittsfield helps to make our community stronger and safer;
it’s a space where we can get to know our neighbors, and share about
events, local recommendations, items for sale/free, safety concerns,
ideas, and generally stay informed- specific for Pittsfield
community members. You can sign-up at pittsfieldnh.nextdoor.com
The Summary Report highlights these and other key actions and
solutions explored, as well as a more detailed look at the process
used and the data that was gathered. Read the Summary Report here.
A big thank you to all the community members who shared their voice
on this important issue- whether it was participating in the
Communication Survey online, sharing feedback while we were out
canvassing in the town, or joining for the community dialogue on
this issue at Pittsfield Listens Community Connection. Thank you
also to the members of the Action Committee for your energy, time,
creativity, patience, and commitment to our community.
How can all of us make Pittsfield a great place for everyone to
live, learn, work and play? Pittsfield Listens is a community
engagement project of the Pittsfield Youth Workshop. For more
