Pittsfield Players Are Just The Ticket At
Steele Hill Resort
If you're looking to add a little variety to your
summer dinner plans, think about a visit to Steele Hill Resort's
Hilltop Restaurant, where every Tuesday evening through August the
Pittsfield Players will provide diners with a comedic musical review
called "Wicked Songs by Wicked People" to go along with the three
course dinner and the magnificent view. Dinner is served beginning
at 6:30 pm and the show starts at 8 pm, and the whole evening is
just $29 per person, beverages, tips and taxes not included.
The show includes songs about growing up, dating,
marriage and politics, and is recommended for those ages 13 and
above, with parental guidance advised for some slightly off-color
and politically incorrect components of the show. Some of the songs
people already are familiar with, such as the song "Kids" from
Bye Bye Birdie, "Take Back Your Mink", from Guys and Dolls,
and "Always Look On the Bright Side of Life" from the hit
musical Spamalot. Some of the naughtier numbers are by Tom
Lehrer, including "The Masochism Tango" and "I Hold Your Hand in
Mine."
Cast members include Gerri Casey, who also
directed the show, Jeff Gregoire, Michael Curtiss, Lena Luongo and
Amie White. A. Robert Dionne is the accompanist and Joshua Crowell
is the stage manager with Chris Lemay handling lighting.
Don't miss this hilarious evening of song and
great food with one of the best views in New Hampshire. For
reservations, call Steele Hill Resort at 603 524-0500.

From
School To The Voters Of Pittsfield School District
by Rachel
Wood
Since January of 2002, primary school educators
across the country have been working toward the common goal of U.S.
students reaching 100% proficiency by the year 2014. Successful
establishment and implementation of an education program whereby
every student achieves grade level or better in reading and math
involves a multi-year, major reform effort at the state and district
level.
Few would disagree that the most prevalent
characteristic of every classroom in America is, ironically, one
that also distinguishes us from classrooms in the rest of the world
— diversity. The goal for all educators in our country today is to
incorporate diversity and guide the entire student body to grade
level proficiency. One of the most pressing challenges that states
and districts currently face involves identification and resolution
of the gaps in academic achievement between various subgroups of
students.
The government recognizes that achievement gaps
exist, for example, in special needs children and economically
disadvantaged children. Even if a school were to reach acceptable
proficiency overall, it would not reach 100% proficiency unless or
until all achievement gaps within their federally designated
subgroups were closed. At Pittsfield Elementary School, for example,
approximately 40% of the school's 350+ student body are economically
disadvantaged and approximately 15% are special needs children.
Pittsfield is absolutely committed to closing its
achievement gap and meeting the educational needs of each and every
student in the district. At Pittsfield Elementary School, for
example, all educational programs adopted in the last eight years
were selected because they underscore personalized learning. From
the school's Four Blocks Literacy program (www.four-blocks.com),
to Everyday Mathematics (www.everydaymathsuccess.com),
to The Responsive Classroom (www.responsiveclassroom.org),
the implementation of these and other personalized and inclusive
learning programs has evolved over a period of the last eight years.
Another invaluable procedure that has taken place
at Pittsfield Elementary School twice a year for the last eight
years is the Student Review Process. During this review, each and
every elementary school student is discussed individually at a
meeting that includes 1) the student's classroom teacher, 2) the
special education case manager for that grade level, 3) the director
of student services, 4) the literacy coordinator, and 5) the school
principal. The teacher discusses the accomplishments and learning
needs of each individual student at these meetings.
The educators and administrators of the
Pittsfield School District acknowledge that there is much work to be
done to reach 100% proficiency. The next six years will most
assuredly bring adoption of new programs, modifications to existing
programs, extensions and refinements of current school programs from
one district school to the other to provide a continuation of
curriculum for students. The students, every one of them, deserve
the educational tools they require to achieve grade level
proficiency as they move through each year of school to graduation.
