New Members
Appointed To Committee On Women Veterans
Four new members have been appointed to the Advisory Committee on Women
Veterans for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), an expert panel that
advises VA on issues and programs affecting women veterans.
“I am pleased to welcome the newest members of this committee to the
important job of serving America’s women veterans,” said Secretary of
Veterans Affairs Dr. James B. Peake. “Members of this committee work
tirelessly on behalf of women veterans to improve outreach, ensure access to
VA benefits and recommend ways in which VA can better meet their needs.”
Established in 1983, the advisory committee makes recommendations for
administrative and legislative changes. The committee members are appointed
to one, two, or three-year terms. The new committee members are:
Davy Coke of Poway, Calif., a retired Navy second class petty officer who
served in Vietnam. He currently is a trainer and mentor for new service
members in the aerospace field.
Yanira Gomez of Germantown, Md., a former Army medical specialist who served
in Iraq. She is currently serving as national outreach officer for the
Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Gloria Maser of Alexandria, Va., a colonel in the Army Reserves. She is a
former deputy chief of staff for health affairs with the Multi-National
Security Transition Command in Iraq. She currently works for a strategy and
technology organization.
Women Veterans
Women veterans are one of the fastest growing segments of the veteran
population. There are approximately 1.8 million women veterans. They
constitute nearly 8 percent of the total veteran population and about 5
percent of all veterans who use VA health care. VA estimates that by 2020
women veterans will make up 10 percent of the veteran population.
VA has women veterans program managers at VA medical centers and women
veterans coordinators at VA regional offices to assist women veterans with
health and benefits issues.

Snowmobile
Trails Ready for Holiday Weeks
The New Hampshire Bureau of Trails reports that, after the recent snow
storms, the snowmobile trail system in the state is in good shape.
The local volunteer snowmobile clubs and the Bureau of Trails have been
working hard to get trails ready for this winter’s riding season. Clubs in
the Great North Woods region are reporting most of their trail systems open
for riding. Snow totals in central and southern New Hampshire are similar to
those up north, with ample riding opportunities.
The ice storm a week ago left many trails in the southern part of the state
with tree debris and damage, but local clubs and State staff have been
working long hours over the past week to clear trails. Some trails are still
closed; however, it is anticipated that they will be clear of downed trees
by New Year’s.
Riders should plan to find early season riding conditions and be mindful of
changing trail status, water bars, and some downed trees. Riders should
check local club websites for area information and the Bureau of Trails
website for weekly trail condition updates on Tuesdays and Fridays.
The Bureau of Trails is a part of the NH Division of Parks & Recreation. The
division manages over 73 state parks, campgrounds, thousands of miles of
trails, historic sites, waysides, and natural areas. The division is part of
the Department of Resources and Economic Development. For more information
about the Bureau of Trails, please call 603-271-3254 or visit:

Pittsfield School
District Community Forum
Recent graduates
of Pittsfield Middle High School interested in sharing their experiences and
words of wisdom for current students are asked to contact Leslie Bergevin,
Guidance Director, at 435-6701 or
[email protected]. The annual forum is scheduled for the
morning of Wednesday, January 7, 2009, during the morning advisory period.
Following the forum, recent graduates are invited to meet with
administrators to help develop a vision of what PMHS students should be able
to do upon graduation. The activity is part of the Pittsfield School
District’s reconsideration of its mission as the school board and staff work
to create stronger continuity across all grades.
A Pittsfield School District Community Forum for parents and community
members will also be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, January
10, in the Pittsfield Middle High School cafeteria. Participants in this
Community Forum will be asked (1) to reconsider the district’s mission
statement and (2) to develop a vision for the school district’s future. In
the process, participants will describe what Pittsfield’s schools will look
like in the future, and what graduates will know and be able to do when they
receive their diplomas. The thoughts of faculty, staff, recent graduates and
community members will form the basis of mission and vision statements to be
completed by spring.
