Police Explorers Open House At Pittsfield Police Department
Since August 2012, the Chichester and Pittsfield Police Departments
have partnered to create the Suncook Valley Explorers post 331.
Exploring is a Learning for Life’s career education program for
young men and women who are 14 (and have completed the eighth grade)
or 15-20 years old. Exploring’s purpose is to provide experiences
to help young people mature and to prepare them to become
responsible and caring adults.
At monthly meetings, Exploring Post 331 will focus on introducing
the youth to the field of law enforcement through focus lessons,
guest speakers, and field trips. If you are interested in exploring
the career of law enforcement this may be the opportunity you’re
looking for.

Locke-Carver
Milton and Wendy Locke of Pittsfield announce the engagement of
their daughter, Jessica Locke, to Jared Carver, son of Kenneth
Carver of Gilford, and Audrey Carver of Bartlett.
Locke graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 2010 and
earned a Bachelor’s degree in Family Studies. She currently works at
the NH Division for Children, Youth, and Families in Concord.
Carver graduated from Plymouth State University in 2009 and earned a
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He currently works as
a licensed representative at Lincoln Financial Securities in
Concord.
A September 2014 wedding is planned.
Chamber Music Concert At First Congregational
The North Country Chamber Players (NCCP) will provide an evening of
wonderful music at the First Congregational Church, 24 Main Street,
Pittsfield, Friday, October 4, 7:30 p.m.
The free concert will consist of Brahms and Haydn selections as well
as Dvorak piano pieces. Featured performers are: Miki-Sophia Cloud
and Ronnie Bauch, violin; Chris Finckel, cello; Ah Ling Neu, viola;
and Bernard Rose, piano. To learn more about these talented

Dorcas Guild
The Dorcas Guild of the First Congregational Church of Pittsfield
met the evening of September 10 with 13 members and one guest
attending. President Nancy Fogg opened the meeting and Freda Jones
led devotions with several interesting readings entitled, “Moments
of Awareness,” and “Thoughts in a Garden,” from a book by Helen
Lowrie Marshall. She also read “The Difference,” and offered “Tips.”
All joined in the Lord’s Prayer.
In the absence of secretary Joan Riel, Nella Hobson read the minutes
of the June meeting, which were accepted; read a thank-you note from
Donna Stockman and circulated cards to be signed and mailed.
Treasurer Reny Boyd gave her financial report.
Mary Jo Powelson has the food basket, which was brought by Kathy
Bergeron and will go next to Corine Miller. The apron went from
Peggy Jacobs to Freda and will go to Mary Jo in October. The mystery
package furnished by Joan was won by Nella.
Audrey Moore, Nancy and Mary Jo will discuss the luncheon for the
Christmas Fair, scheduled for November 23, from 9 to 2. Nancy and
Mary Jo are the committee members for the Fair and are continuing to
plan for it. Nella and Joan will plan the Craft Fair scheduled for
December 7, with the additional help of Bev Murdough. Bev Moore
asked for the poster paper to prepare for both fairs’
advertisements.
Mary Jo discussed the Infant and Toddler Diaper Pantry updating the
group on the progress of donations and requirements. The most ever
number of diaper packages was given out (36) earlier in the month. A
motion was made, seconded and approved that we carry through with
the approved motion of a previous business meeting to donate money
to the diaper mission.
“Project Linus” is still in full swing as our service project with
14 more blankets and quilts going to the local chapter. We will
accept donations until the end of the year and individuals may
continue on their own past that deadline. Our household and clothing
donations to local needy and refugees will continue as items are
available.
Report any name/address changes to Nancy, Mary Jo or Joan in a
timely manner for next year’s yearbook as we edit our membership
information. The group elected to reserve any action on donations
for Disaster Relief as our resources may be needed in other areas. A
committee of three – Peggy, Nancy and Mary Jo -- was requested to
work on future programs/activities for our 2014 year.
The president encouraged the membership to attend upcoming church
meetings regarding sanctuary carpet replacement. Also, consider
suggestions for next years’ service projects as well as suggestions
for the travel pattern of funeral and collation attendees.
The church will host a spaghetti dinner with proceeds going to the
Pittsfield Food Pantry. The dinner and bake sale will be held
Saturday, October 26, from 5-7. Guild members were asked to consider
donating pies for desserts and other baked goods for sale. The
sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board.
Several members and others were named during a time of “prayer
concerns.” The Guild will take on the Fellowship Hour October 13.
At the close of the meeting, delicious refreshments, including a
wonderful peach cake, were served by Freda and Audrey. Attendees
then participated in the popular “Pound Auction” with interesting
results. Bev Murdough and Mary Jo kept the auction lively.
The next meeting will be October 8 at 7 pm. Scheduled hostesses are
Carolyn Davis and Bev Murdough. It will be “chocolate night,” and
the last call for service project items.

If you have not had the opportunity to visit Pittsfield’s newest
(recreated) restaurant, you are missing a great place to meet and
greet friends, whether it be to share a cup of coffee or a pleasant
meal. On Sunday mornings, there is usually a line of patrons waiting
for a table. This is indeed proof that the word is out and
individuals are coming to Pittsfield to find a wonderful welcoming
atmosphere. Paul and Dave are friendly, caring and helpful to
everyone who pass through their doors and make you feel right at
home. The food is excellent, plentiful, and you never feel rushed.

historic Pittsfield. We hope your lead in creating such a wonderful
space will encourage other businesses to locate in Pittsfield. Your

Suicide Prevention
On Monday, October 7, 2013 please join us at 7 pm at the Loudon
Center Freewill Baptist Church located at 433 Clough Hill Road in
Loudon, NH for a Free public presentation on suicide prevention. No
matter your age or socio-economic status, this is a must for you to
attend. You never know who you might be able to help... Or when.
This presentation will be done by NAMI NH (National Alliance for the
Mentally Ill). Come and bring your friends. Light refreshments will
be served. Please feel free to bring a donation for the Loudon Food

Pittsfield Secret Santa Program
The Pittsfield Fire Department and Ambulance Service will again be
coordinating the Pittsfield Secret Santa Program. As Christmas is
rapidly approaching, we would like to begin planning for this year’s
program. Last year, this program was able to provide toys and
clothing to 163 children in Pittsfield whose families might have
otherwise had a difficult Christmas, and we are anticipating an
increase in the amount of children again this year.
We are hoping that you might be able to help us provide gifts for
these children. We are looking for donations of new, unwrapped toys
or clothing for all ages. Monetary donations are appreciated as
well. Your efforts will greatly benefit the children of Pittsfield.
We would like to have all donations by November 15th to allow us
time to determine what gifts still need to be purchased. If you will
be donating toys or clothing, please contact Kris Ahearn at the fire
station at 435-6807 to coordinate a time to drop them off, or

Floral Park Cemetery Fence Fund

On my many walks throughout downtown Pittsfield, I always admire how
beautiful the Floral Park Cemetery looks. I believe it is one of the
best-kept cemeteries in New Hampshire, and maybe in all of New
England. We all have Don Fife to thank for that – without any
fanfare, he tirelessly mows and trims each lot like it is his own.
He takes much pride in his work and is constantly focusing on what
needs to be done next in order that no part of the cemetery looks
better than another. Don has done this for at least 40 years now. A
remarkable feat in itself!
This brings me to the reason why I am focusing on this beautiful
property – the fence is in dire need of replacement. Since there is
no money available in the Cemetery Trust Funds, I asked the Trustees
if I could take on the project of fundraising to replace this fence.
Two quotes were received and it will cost between $85,000 and
$90,000 for a black galvanized steel maintenance free picket fence
with granite posts at various sections. This price includes
extending the fence and gates the length of High Street, with
another small section added near the front gate.
Paul and I have donated the first $1,000 towards this fence.
Hopefully, when the first $20,000 is collected, the project will
begin. Checks can be made payable to the “Floral Park Cemetery Fence
Fund” and sent to P.O. Box 98, Pittsfield, NH 03263. If each family
who has a loved one at Floral Park donated $10, we would meet our
goal in no time.

Obituaries
Howard R. Lank
Howard “Howie” Lank, 62, of Pine Grove Drive, Belmont, died
September 21st at home, following a long illness. He was born in
Concord, the son of Howard J. and Hazel (Parker) Lank. He was raised
in Gilmanton I.W., moving to Barnstead as a young man. He lived in
the Barnstead – Pittsfield area until March when he moved to Belmont
to the home of his daughter. He was a master plumber and
electrician and was self-employed. He was an active member of the
Pittsfield Chapter A.A. He was a former horseback rider, a
fisherman, and a accomplished baseball player. His passions were
waterfront living, spending as much time as possible with his
“grandbabies” and his dog “Kemo.”
He is survived by 3 daughters, Cassandra “Cassi” Thomas, Keri Lank,
and Katrina Lank. A son Howard Lank Jr., 9 Grandchildren, including
Carter, Callie and Cullen, Hunter and Brody. 2 Sisters, Carol J.
Watson of Ocala, FL and Gail N Murphy of Ctr. Barnstead. A Brother,
Clinton Lank of Barnstead. Nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and
cousins.
A Memorial Visitation will be held Thursday from 6-8 PM in the
Perkins & Pollard Memorial Home, 60 Main St. Pittsfield. A Memorial
Church Service will be held on Saturday at 10:00 AM in the Parade
Congregational Church, Barnstead. The Rev. Sandy Pierson, Pastor,
will officiate. “Urn Burial” in the Pinegrove Cemetery, Stage Road,
Gilmanton Iron Works will be at the family’s convenience.

Royce E. Elkins
Royce E. Elkins, 81, of Tilton Hill Road, died September 16th at the
VA Medical Center following a long illness. He was born in
Pittsfield the son of Charles and Ruth (Drew) Elkins. He was a
graduate of Pittsfield High School. He served in the US Air Force
during the Korean Conflict serving in England and retired as a 1st
Sergeant after 20 years. After returning to Pittsfield he was a
rural mail carrier and became Postmaster in Epsom and later
Postmaster in Pittsfield.
He was a member, past president and a Paul Harris Fellow of the
Pittsfield Rotary Club. He was a long time member and past Commander
of the Peterson-Cram American Legion, Post #75. He was a member of
the Corinthian Lodge #82, Pittsfield, the Scottish Rite Bodies,
Valley of Concord and Nashua and also a member of the Jesters. He
was a longtime member of the Bektash Temple Shriners and had marched
with the Shriners Drum and Bugle Corps in many parades and attended
Shriner Events throughout the country.
He is survived by his wife Roberta (Sargent) Elkins of Pittsfield; a
son, Russell Elkins and his wife Linda of Loudon, a daughter; Susan
Sargent and her husband John of Hopkinton; step son, Ricki Tasker
and step daughter Melanie Ekstrom; step daughters, Maureen Gencco,
Deborah Mousseau, and Dawn Farnum; ten grandchildren and a great
grandson. He was predeceased by a brother Carlton Elkins and a
sister Gwendolyn Hussey.
There are no visiting hours. A funeral service was held September
23rd at the First Congregational Church. Rev. David Stasiak, Pastor,
officiated. Burial will be in the Floral Park Cemetery, Pittsfield,
at the family’s convenience.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the CRVNA
Hospice Program , 30 Pillsbury St. Concord or to the Shriners
Hospital in Boston or Springfield, MA.
