The Connected Farm Buildings of New England

Presented by author Thomas Hubka, 1:00pm Tuesday July 23

Horseshoe Pond Place Community Room,

26 Commercial Street, Concord, NH

Pittsfield Area Senior Center participants will visit Horseshoe Pond Place to attend this informative presentation funded by a grant from the NH Humanities Council.  We will have a BBQ beef lunch at 11:30 AM, and then at 12:30 PM we will celebrate the birthday of the ice cream cone!  If you would like to attend the luncheon, please call 435-8482 by July 16th to make your lunch reservation.  If you are in need of transportation, please contact us and we’ll make sure you can attend.

Through architecture unique to northern New England, this illustrated talk explores how farmers converted their typical separate house and barns into connected farmsteads. Thomas Hubka’s research in his award-winning book, Big House, Little House, Back House, Barn: The Connected Farm Buildings of New England, demonstrates that average farmers were, in fact, motivated by competition with farmers in other regions of America, who had better soils and growing seasons and fewer rocks to clear. The connected farmstead organization, housing equal parts mixed-farming and home-industry, was one of the collective responses to the competitive economic threat.

TOPS News

Well, we had another good week at TOPS with our recipe exchange given by Barbara. Great Job! It was a really nice meeting. We had some great recipes handed around the room that are low calorie and some summer salads, which is a good thing because we are coming right into the veggie season.

I, for one, love this time of the year where you can walk right out to the garden and get the fresh veggies.

Barbara gave some very good tips and ideas. She talked about when she was young, back on the farm, and how things were made.

The summer days are ahead for us and we are lucky to have all of the fruits and veggies on hand. So Enjoy!

Best Loser of  the week was Thom, and KOPS of the week was Peggy. Kudos to those runners up. We have two Miss Angels: Irene and Suzie. Keep up the good work ladies, you can get to your goal in no time.

If anyone is interested in joining us, we meet on Tuesday nights @ 5:30 for weigh-in and @ 6:30 for our meeting at the St.Stephens Church on Main Street in Pittsfield. Any questions please call Stuart Pike @ 856-4642 or Pat Smith @ 435-5333.

Hope everyone has a great week, and remember, take time to smell the flower. I hope everyone enjoyed time with family and friends and stayed safe over the Fourth of July holiday. See you all lighter next week!

Pittsfield Players to Present The Rockin’Daddios

Pittsfield The_Daddios.jpg

Angelo Gentile, Bo Guyer and Jim Rogato are The Rockin’ Daddios.

The Pittsfield Players will present their Old Home Days Concert on Friday, July 19 at 7:30 pm at the Scenic Theatre, 6 Depot Street, Pittsfield, NH featuring The Rockin’ Daddios, a trio who perform songs from the ‘50’s and ‘60’s. Tickets, which are $10 per person, will be available on a rush seating basis at the box office on the night of the show. The box office will open at 7 pm for ticket sales.

The music of the fifties and sixties conjures up many special memories for those of us commonly referred to as Baby Boomers. Music from a bygone era, these tunes bring us back to a more innocent time of our lives when kids didn’t grow up as fast and the influence of the media was not as prevalent. The Rockin’ Daddios bring back some of the best loved songs of the late fifties and early sixties sung in a doo- wop style with the accent on harmonies and fun lyrics. You’ll hear songs like “Book of Love”, “Blue Moon”, “Teenager in Love” and “Little Star” to name a few. The songs are family friendly and guaranteed to warm your heart and bring a smile to your face.

Inspired from a popular “Men’s Medley” which was originally featured in Irene Descehenes’ “Moments to Remember  I and II” 1950’s reviews, the Rockin’ Daddios consist of Lakes Region residents Jim Rogato, Bo Guyer and Angelo Gentile, who have been performing together in various shows and reviews for well over 10 years. Collectively, their community theater experience spans six decades!

The Daddios will be performing throughout the Lakes region with dates in Meredith, Laconia, Holderness and right here in Pittsfield on Friday night July 19th. What better way to celebrate the 50’s for this year’s Pittsfield Old Home Day than with the Rockin’ Daddios at the Scenic Theater.

Mark your calendars for Friday night July 19th. Then sit back, relax and enjoy the Rockin’ Daddios. Their music will make you smile.

Pittsfield Listen’s Annual Cookout

Pittsfield Listens BBQ.jpg

Pittsfield Listens team enjoying the cookout! Jen Cole, Steering Committee, Julia Cole, Assistant Coordinator, Molly Messenger, Community Outreach Coordinator.

Ice cream at Frekey’s, Old Home Day, and swimming at your favorite pond or pool- there are many traditions in Pittsfield to celebrate summer.  Last week, over 50 people from throughout the community joined for another way to have a solid start to their summer- the Pittsfield Listen’s Annual Cookout!

This event took place on Thursday June 27th at the Pittsfield Youth Workshop, as part of Pittsfield Listen’s monthly Community Connection Series.  The menu included hamburgers with beef from Top of the Hill Farm in Wolfeboro, locally grown greens, and sides of potato salad, watermelon and corn.  The event was open to all and brought people who share in a commitment to making our community a better place for everyone to live, learn and play.

Alongside the free flowing conversation, people were welcomed to participate in a School Report Card. Using a list of suggestions made by community members in the 2011 dialogues, participants rated how things have progressed.  Categories ranged from communication to transition, more electives to discipline and clear expectations for behavior, expanded use of technology to pride in the schools. Participants placed a sticker in the column that best represented their view of each category since 2011- no improvement, improved a little or improved a lot.

This was an engaging activity for all ages, with a purpose to hear from community of the areas where we can celebrate progress, and where there is still room for improvement.  Information gathered from this activity will be used to identify areas for action for community members and the school district. The results can be seen in the Community Bulletin in The Suncook Valley Sun, on the Pittsfield Listen’s Facebook page and email list.

Thank you to the Pittsfield Listens Steering Committee and community volunteers for your help with this event. Thank you also to the Nellie Mae Education Foundation for their generous support which makes this possible.

The next Pittsfield Listens Community Connection Series is Thursday July 18 from 6:30-7:30 pm.  For more information or to get involved, please contact Molly Messenger, Community Outreach Coordinator with Pittsfield Listens.  [email protected]         (603)-435-8272
