Senior Lunches At The Pittsfield Area Senior Center

Senior lunches are served daily at the Pittsfield Area Senior Center
based in the Pittsfield Community Center, 74 Main Street. The
lunches serve the communities of Barnstead, Chichester, Epsom,
Loudon, and Pittsfield.
Since I’ve joined my husband in retirement earlier this spring,
we’ve eaten many delicious hot meals served at noon daily at the
Senior Center. We have made new friends while enjoying the benefits
of paying $2.00 a meal (suggested donation) for a nutritionally
balanced meal (one-third of USDA requirement). I eat an additional
lunch at the Senior Center on Tuesday, my husband’s work day, when
the meal is self-serve and a combination of soup, salad, and/or
sandwich. It provides a great break from my work at home.
Signing up in advance for meals is strongly
encouraged for planning purposes, and it is very easy. Call the
program manager, Leslie Vogt, at 435-8482, or email
[email protected]. After
you begin enjoying your mid-day meal among new friends, you can
sign-up for upcoming meals in our sunny and inviting meeting room.
To make your meal selections, use the monthly menu inserted into the
Senior Center Newsletter, which is also available in paper in
various locations in Pittsfield, in the Post Office or by email from
Leslie. The newsletter provides information about other senior
recreational opportunities during the coming month.
I hope you will join us for lunch at the Pittsfield Area Senior
Center. The meals are tasty, the volunteers who serve and cleanup
are cheerful and personable, and you can find an interesting group
of seniors to share part of your day with!
Teachers, Katie Bass, Jon Uhouse and Kathy Mahanes wrote a Clif
grant that provided each student with a $12.00 discount toward
purchasing a book. The students completed the books online using the
common core writing skills while also learning about using
technology.
On Friday, June 14, the Friday Night Kayaking Club met at Brindle
Pond in Barnstead at 6 PM. It was a pleasant hour plus paddle,
enjoyed by everyone including “Bella the Kayaking Dog.” On Friday,
June 21 the group paddled Northwood Lake in Northwood. June 28 is
Chestnut Pond in Epsom.

What’s Up at PYW?

May has been a very busy month for fundraising for the Pittsfield
Youth Workshop (PYW). On Friday, May 3, 2013 PYW held its 2nd
Annual Karaoke Fundraiser. The night was not attended as well as
last year but that did not stop us from having an excellent night.
Mark Minasalli, the DJ, did a great job with the music. There was
not a lot of Karaoke singers but, for those who were brave enough to
sing, it was a chance for them to act out their “star” fantasies or
find the “ham” in themselves. And of course, the dance floor was
jam-packed all night with everyone wanting one more song! We also
got a lot of good feedback from the attendees for our next Karaoke
night!
We want to thank Vintage Hill Assisted Living, Leap Year Marketing,
The Mellen Company, The Paige Agency, Northeast Delta Dental,
Citizens Bank, Joe Darrah Enterprises, Konopka Floor Sanding,
Pleasant View Gardens, Millican Nurseries and Globe Manufacturing
for sponsoring a table. We also want to thank the Del-Lea Country
Club for letting us hold our event there again for a second year.
On Friday, May 31, 2013, PYW held the 11th Annual Pittsfield Fiddle
Contest/Silent Auction at the Scenic Theatre.
In the Youth Division, 1st place was won by Leah LaCross of
Chichester, 2nd place by Makayla Hastie of Northfield, and 3rd place
by Leah Hoey of Bow. In the Adult Division, 1st place was won by
Teresa Wyman of Canterbury, 2nd place by Dave Shaw of Belmont, NH
and 3rd place by Paul Smith of Lee, NH. Other participants included
Christopher Dudley of Barnstead, Shelby and Audrey Smith of Lee, and
Peter Yarensky of Barrington.
PYW would like to thank all the participants and volunteers for
their support. A big thanks to our volunteer judges Sylvia Miskoe,
Keith Fletcher, and Audrey Danielson, to Wayne Summerford for
letting us use his sound system for the evening, and to the
Pittsfield Players for allowing us to use the Scenic Theatre!
We would also like to thank Nathan Wechsler and Co., The Pittsfield
Clothes Closet, Barry Podmore Inc. and Keeley Painting for the prize
money donations, and the Salty Dog Pottery, Maxfield’s, Natural
Choice Therapeutic Massage, NH Fisher Cats, Boston Red Sox,

American Legion Peterson-Cram Post #75
On June 14, 2013, at the Pittsfield Middle High School Graduation
Awards and Scholarship night, the Peterson-Cram Post #75 presented
the American Legion Peterson-Cram Robert Moulton Scholarship to Ms.
Rebecca Adams.
According to Post #75 Commander, Merrill Vaughan, “Ms. Adams was a
member of the Site Council, Student Council, has held various class
officer positions and is a member of the National Honor Society.”
Ms. Adams is also “involved with the Blue Star Families with her
own family as the vanguard lead in supporting families who have a
loved one deployed during war time.” Ms. Adams has also been
selected to attend the University of New Hampshire Air Force ROTC
program. This, along with her major of Chemistry, will provide her
with military knowledge, customs and courtesies and will lead to a
commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force
when she graduates in four years.
The American Legion Peterson-Cram Post #75 is proud to have
presented this award to her and wishes her well in reaching her
future personal goals.

Well, this past week’s meeting was the cat’s meow and when I say
that, it was a whole lot of moving in the seat. Our program was on
how to get exercise while we sit and how our bodies get stiff if we
sit too long. By the end of the meeting we were all nice and limber
and relaxed. A very good way on how to get your stretching in if you
are at work or traveling or just sitting watching TV. Thanks Fern
for those tips!
Our Best Loser of the week was Diana and we had three others who
tied and came in second. KOPS of the week was Peggy, and Miss Angel
is Suzie, Mickey, and Janis. Keep up the good work ladies and you
will be at your goal in no time. Kudos to those who lost.
We started a new contest named the Loser’s Lotto. It should be a lot
of fun. They talked about SRD and how that was; I heard it was a
pretty awesome time had by members. Awards were handed out to Pat
Smith from our Chapter.
At our next meeting we will be having our Recipe Exchange and that
should be a good meeting. Summer has officially started and that
means the bathing suits are all around us and with those, our
bodies. I, for one, know I will never be in the “teenie, weenie
yellow polka dot bikini” but I sure would like to look good in
something and feel good about wearing it. That is why I am at TOPS;
to be around friends and be in a good weight loss support group.
If anyone is interested in joining, we meet on Tuesday nights at the
St. Stephen’s Church on Main Street in Pittsfield at 5:30 pm for
weigh in and at 6:30 pm for our meeting. Any questions please call

Letter To The Editor
I’m going to try to come up with ten reasons for why I plan on
submitting a petition to keep a part-time Fire Chief.
1.) $58,000 part-time cost to the Town, $103,000 full time cost to
the Town.
2.) Part-time 30 hours vs. full time 40 hours minus vacation days,
sick days, holidays; sounds like 30 hours to me.
3.) Burning without a fire permit puts me in conflict with a full
time chief. I’ve said many times we will never understand each
other. I start them, he wants to put them out.
4.) At the school meeting, after the vote for the repairs to the
Elementary School passed, I understood that folks were going to do
everything to avoid another property tax increase. There are some
people in town who forgot this.
5.) The Fire Dept. has increased 13%, while the Town Road budget has
decreased.
6.) We, as a town, have voted for two years not to save hardly any
money for fire trucks and road equipment.
7.) At the special town meeting a month ago, it was suggested to
help fund the full time fire chief from the town road budget. I
later discovered the road budget, due to lean funding and a tough
winter, is $18,000 in the red; probably going to need some money
from the Fire Department in the end.
8.) It’s just like the old saying: “Too much chief, not enough
engines.”

American Legion Peterson-Cram Post 75
The American Legion Peterson-Cram Post #75 will hold their meeting
on 1 July, 2013 at 7:30 pm at Post Commander Merrill Vaughan’s
residence at 50 Deer Meadow Rd, Pittsfield. Topics to be discussed
will be the status of Post #75 renovation (with a strong possibility
of finally holding meetings at the Post Home) and new ideas for
marketing and recruitment. Any veteran who is thinking about joining
the Legion, please feel free to attend and see how we are.

Pittsfield Old Home Day
Plans for Old Home Day are underway and being finalized. On
Saturday, July 20, be sure to come downtown and enjoy all the
activities and meet and greet your fellow citizens and neighbors. A
few of the highlights include:
• Friday night, July 19 - The Pittsfield Players are sponsoring “The
Daddy-O’s”, a 50’s music a cappella group at 7:30 pm at the Scenic
Theatre. Tickets are $10 at the door.
• Saturday, July 20 - breakfast will be served at the Park Street
Baptist Church from 7-9 am and the Craft Fair at Dustin Park will
begin at 9 am. There will be face painting, jump tent, dunk booth,
free kids craft table, Photo “booth,” and kids games. Check out the
American Chop Suey cook-off. The Little Red Wagon will perform at 10
am. Jujubee the Clown will be on site from 11-1 pm twisting
balloons. The Pittsfield Historical Society will be open. Their
headquarters is located on Elm Street. If you have never stopped in,
please do so! Music in the morning will be provided by Don Smith
and Bill Parker. The Kids Bike Parade will be held at noon on Main
Street. The Big Parade will begin at 1 pm and follow the same route
as last year. If you’d like to enter a float or other entry, please
call Louie Houle at 435-6938 to register.
After the parade at 2 pm, a Car Show will be held on Drake Field
(all vehicles welcome-cars, trucks, motorcycles).
The rest of the day’s activities will be held at Drake Field; kids
and adult activities including musical chairs, pie eating, bubble
gum blowing contest, water balloon toss, sack races and make your
own paper airplane craft. A burger and hot dog cookout will be held
from 3-6 pm (menu and ticket prices TBA). A Hula Hoop demonstration
by Nicole Marcelli will be held at 4 pm. Musical entertainment by
Tammy Lynn and Myles High and The King Chrome Band will be held.
The Duck Race is back... Watch for more details on this. Fireworks
will end what, we hope, will be a great day! Watch The Sun and the

Pittsfield Old Home Day
Annual Cook-Off
The Cook-Off for the Pittsfield Old Home Day this year is American
Chop Suey. This event is sponsored by the Victory Workers 4-H Club.
Anyone and everyone is invited to submit their best crockpot of
American Chop Suey and bring it to the 4-H Booth at Dustin Park by 9
am on Saturday, July 20.
The winners will be selected by the public by popular vote. Cash
prizes will be awarded: 1st - $50, 2nd - $25, and 3rd - $10.
The first 10 cooks to call will be registered. Please call Andi Riel

Obituaries
Theresa B. Chagnon
Theresa B. Chagnon, 83, of Salisbury Green, died June 15th at the
Pleasant View Center following a brief illness. She was born in
Pittsfield, the daughter of Victor and Irene (Genest) Riel and lived
there most of her life. She had worked for the former Adams Brothers
Shoe Factory and retired from Suncook Leather Co. She was a long
time member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church.
She is survived by her husband Leonard Chagnon of Concord; two sons,
Steven Chagnon of Loudon and Matthew Chagnon of Concord; two
brothers, Cleon Riel of Pittsfield and Vincent Riel of Keene; two
sisters, Arlene Riel of Pittsfield and Patricia Gagne of Florida;
eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren; and many nieces
and nephews. She was predeceased by a son Michael who died in 2006.
The Perkins and Pollard Memorial Home, Pittsfield is assisting with
arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the
Concord Regional Visiting Nurses Assoc., 30 Pillsbury St., Concord,

Catherine E. Clark
Catherine E. (Neal) Clark of Main St. died June 18th at the Concord
Hospital following a long illness.
She was born in Rochester the daughter of Natt and Carrie Neal. She
worked as a clerk at Maxfield’s Hardware Store for many years. She
was the widow of Dennis E. Clark, who died in 2005 and is survived
by a son, Dennis R. Clark and his wife France of New Boston; a
daughter Diane Matott and her partner Darrin Jock and son Garrett of
Pittsburg; two grandsons, Jeremie and Austin Clark; two brothers,
Paul Neal of Rochester and Frank Neal of Farmington; three sisters,
Alice Guy of No. Berwick, ME, Pauline Wallington of Somersworth and
Muriel Neal.
She was predeceased by a son, David Clark, who died in 2003 and a
brother Robert Neal.
