PRESCHOOL
OPENINGS!
It’s time to be thinking about enrolling your child
for school in the fall! The Center School in Northwood is accepting
registrations for the 2012-2013 school year. The Center School
is a parent cooperative preschool located next to the town hall in
Northwood, which provides a developmental program for three, four,
and five year-olds of Northwood and surrounding towns. There
are openings in our two-day (T/Th) program and three-day (M/W/F)
morning programs. For information, please call the school at
942-7686 or email us at
[email protected]
to request an information packet.
Pittsfield Democrats are planning a Pot Luck Obama/Democrats Cookout
at the F.B. Argue Pool and Recreation area on Saturday, September
15th from 3-5 pm. You may have seen some Pittsfield Democrats
marching in the Old Home Day Parade, or maybe you stopped by for
lemonade and cookies at our table in Dustin Park. Everyone had the
opportunity to have their picture taken with the president, or at
least his life-size cardboard stand-in. The election is coming soon
and polls are saying it’s a statistical tie in New Hampshire, a
battle ground state. So we are gearing up with meetings, phone-banks
and canvassing. Come join us for hot dogs, hamburgers and lemonade
provided by our volunteers, and bring along a salad or dessert if
you are able. We welcome the opportunity to meet and share our
enthusiasm for the Democratic slate of state candidates and Obama
for President! If you have questions please contact Mary Terese at
435-8796.
Barnstead Community Market will be open on Labor Day from 9 - 4.
Lobsters will be available that weekend. They usually arrive late
Friday afternoon. Buy early before we run out.

From The Desk Of The Selectmen
Submitted By Pittsfield Board Of Selectmen
A bit of time has passed since the Board of Selectmen (BOS) gave its
last update. However, much has been and continues to be accomplished
on your behalf! Please allow us to share some highlights…
First and foremost, while the Board is not currently prepared to
give specific details of individual cost savings within its
administrative plan, we are pleased to announce an overall savings
to you, the taxpayer. After eight months into the fiscal year we are
approximately 3% below our operating budget with no reduction in
services, even though the budget was decreased by $125,138 at Town
Meeting. Good sound management practices continue to be promoted and
instilled in order to maximize the efficiency of your tax dollars.
In light of these administrative enhancements, concern has been
expressed at our meetings and in the media with regard to a
seemingly lack of public safety exposure. Let the Board assure you
that twenty-four/seven coverage has been maintained. While there
have been staff availability challenges along the way (ie: numerous
FMLA leaves, an unpaid administrative leave, an employee
relocating to another state, utilization of vacation time, etc.),
the Board is taking every measure to ensure the safety of Pittsfield
residents. Albeit, there have been periods of time when supervisory
authorization has been granted for vacation leave to more than one
officer at a time, causing an inability to overlap officers.
However, responsible overtime has been authorized by the Board to
fill the gap when necessary and available.
On August 21st, three new part time EMT’s were appointed as
recommended by the Fire Chief. In May the Board directed the Police
Chief to actively recruit police officers, efforts of which are
on-going. There are three part time officers who have been
conditionally approved by the Board. It is our understanding and
anticipation that, if all goes well with the process, they will
become a member of our team in the very near future. The Board will
continue to work with department heads in aggressive staff
recruitment efforts.
Members of the Board thank you for your continued support in our
endeavors to best serve you. As budget season rapidly approaches, we
will make every attempt to carry these proficient management
practices into the upcoming years.

New Faculty And Staff At PMHS
A few new folks will be joining the Pittsfield School District as we
start the new school year.
Christie Dunlavey will be our new high school science teacher
teaching biology, earth science and a section of 7th grade math.
Christie will be on the 9/10 team and will have a newly formed 10th
grade advisory.
Christie comes to us from Monadnock Middle School and worked with
Alexandra in Boston a few years ago.
Warren Billings will be our middle school world languages teacher
and high school Spanish teacher. Warren comes to us from his native
Concord High School where he had a yearlong substituting position in
Spanish. Warren will be on the unified arts team.
Kim Putman will be our math interventionist this coming year and
also comes to us from Concord High School. She will be teaching the
math essentials classes, pre-algebra and 9th period math support.
We are very fortunate to be able to bring music back to PMHS with
Amy Morse, she has experience rebuilding music programs and most
recently taught at Nute High School. Amy will be working with us the
second half of the day teaching a high school music class and a
couple of middle school music classes. She will be member of the
unified arts team.
Another new position at PMHS is being filled by Sarah Carri. Sarah
is our new Dual Enrollment/Online Learning Coordinator. She will be
working out of the computer lab, will be on the 11/12 and guidance
teams and will play a supporting role in the advisory program. Sarah
has several years of experience with NH Jobs for American Graduates
(JAG) program and comes to us from Merrimack Valley High School.
Also new to us but not new to the district is Carin Kilar who has
taken on the new role for the district as our full time technology
integrator. Carin will be supporting all of us in the district as we
learn how to better integrate technology to support student
learning. Carin’s office is located in the technology office in the
media center.
In special education Ronda Fernald has transitioned from the Flex
program to being one of the high school case managers and will be
focusing on providing support in English. Ronda will be on the 11/12
team and will have a freshman advisory.
Rebecca McHugh (SIC) will be our new Flex program teacher and
coordinator. Rebecca comes to us from Clearway High School in Nashua
and will also be a member of the 11/12 team and also have a freshman
advisory.
Terri Littlefield will be our new middle school case manager
focusing on English support. Terri will be on the 7/8 team and will
have a seventh grade advisory. Terri comes to us from Raymond High
School.
Both Rebecca and Terri had applied to be part of our special
education team in the past and are excited about being able to now
be part of our school.
Notable Improvements At PMHS
We were very fortunate to be able to make some improvements to begin
the new school year. In all classrooms that do not have SmartBoards
we have installed ceiling mounted LCD projectors and new screens
where needed.
We took out some surplus cabinets in our two computer labs and have
increased the capacity of both labs. Jen Massey’s lab will now have
twenty five work stations and the lab in 212 will have at least
twenty work stations.
In the gym we were able to have the stage floor refinished and the
doors to the storage under the stage replaced.
We have been repainting the hallways over the last couple of years
and more were done over the summer and some classrooms have also
been repainted. Although funded through the regular budget process
the gym floor has been refinished and looks brand new once again.
There were several teams that worked over the summer and the outcome
of their work will have lasting positive impacts on our school for
years to come. Among those teams working over the summer were the
Student Success Through Competencies Task Force, the district tech
team, our 21st century learning expectations faculty focus group,
Our Site Council, our advisory council and student led conference
focus group and our I3 team.
The school board approved the Student Success Through Competencies
proposal at their first board meeting in August. The most
significant impact of the proposal is that we will be reporting to
parents students progress toward mastery of competencies on a 1-4
scale for formative and summative assessments. Students will be
awarded credit for a class once they have mastered all competencies
for a course. More information on this will be part of the opening
days activities.
The tech team participated in presentations by vendors who responded
to the district’s request for proposal to supply 1:1 technology
learning devises for our students. The team is recommending to John
and the school board that we go with Apple iPads and related
hardware and apps. Between several different funding sources we may
be able to roll out these devices over the coming school year to
grades 4-12. The tech team also decided to move our email to Google
and to implement Google Apps for Education. Welcome to “the Cloud.”
During the opening days of school all staff will receive training in
our new district web-based email system. The system will allow easy
reliable access from any computer or device in school or at home,
and it will also open possibilities for shared documents and
calendars.
