Dorcas Guild
Sixteen members of the Dorcas Guild met for the November 13th
meeting. President Nella Hobson opened with a welcome and the
reading of Psalm 106. Joan Riel gave two readings: “Always Say a
Prayer” (A.S.A.P.) and a Thanksgiving piece from Guideposts.
Secretary Joan Riel gave her minutes of the October meeting, read
items of correspondence and circulated many Thanksgiving cards for
signing. Treasurer Reny Boyd gave her financial report.
The food basket is with Kathy Bergeron, will go next to Corine
Miller, then Cindy Cyr and Diane Vaughan. Freda Jones has the
travelling apron, which goes next to Corine, Leslie Vogt, Kathy and
then Carolyn Davis. The mystery package brought by Freda was won by
Kathy.
The nominating committee brought a slate of officers for 2012 to be
voted on next month. Presented were Nancy Fogg as president, Kathy
Bergeron as vice president (Mary Jo Powelson as second vice
president), Joan Riel as secretary and Reny Boyd as treasurer.
The service project for the coming year will be blankets. They may
be new or gently used, all kinds and sizes. We will also be
participating in the “Linus Project,” which calls for handmade
blankets according to certain specifications. Last year’s project of
warm clothing and household items for the needy and refugee families
of the greater Concord area will continue as items are available.
The nursery project was discussed and Bev Murdough offered to look
into the purchase of a changing table. Funds were voted to the
Pittsfield Secret Santa Program, as well as for “Hurricane Sandy
Relief” to the “Christian Appalachian Project” and “Samaritan’s
Purse.”
Refreshments provided by Joan Riel and Cindy Cyr were served at the
close of the meeting by Joan, assisted by Mary Jo and Nella. We drew
“Prayer Partners” (Secret Pals) and sorted the new socks that were
donated.
The next meeting will be the annual Christmas Party/Potluck and Gift
Exchange at 6 pm December 11 with Corine and Reny serving as
hostesses. Prayer Partners will be revealed at this meeting.

Well, we made it through Thanksgiving and we didn’t do that bad for
a weight loss for the week. Best Loser of the week was Suzie.
Congrats! KOPS of the week was Peggy! Congrats to you too.
We had a really nice meeting this past week and was treated by
getting a massage. Our speaker was a massage therapist who spoke on
the benefits of getting massages; how it’s a well being for our
bodies, how it does help you lose weight and is just overall good
for you. We heard how it improves our flexibility and how it helps
us to have energy.
You know the old saying “energy creates energy.” When we stay
moving, we stay healthier and more active. With the winter months
ahead of us, we need to find ways to keep fit and moving because its
easy to hibernate in our homes and say to ourselves “Well, maybe I
will take a walk tomorrow.” Well, tomorrow never comes for some of
us.
At our meeting we talked about our upcoming Christmas party and once
again the right choices on food and how this time of the year it’s
really hard to keep away from the sweets and treats. It seems that
every week there is something going on and most of the time it
involves food with socializing with family, coworkers and friends.
Lets try to stay on track and keep our food journals. We should be
having a new contest coming up.
I hope everyone has a great week. “Tension is who you think you
should be. Relaxation is who you are.” --Chinese Proverb
See you all lighter next week!

As the former director of a local food pantry, I would like to share
some important facts with you. While the NH Food Bank is a great
organization that does wonderful work for the needy of our state, it
is important for you to know that they serve only about one third of
the food pantries in the state. We have over 1,000 food pantries in
NH and the Food Bank serves only about 350 of them. Did you know
that the food you donate to the NH Food Bank is actually sold to the
food pantries? They call them “membership fees” but the bottom line
is that the food is not given to them free of charge.
If you want to be sure that your donations of food and/or money
actually goes directly back into your local community at no cost,
please consider donating directly to your local food pantry. Almost
every community has at least one pantry. If you don’t know where
yours is, call your town hall, or a local church and they will be
happy to point you in the right direction.
Unlike the NH Food Bank, your local food pantry has a very low
overhead, in fact some have no overhead at all. This means that more
of your donation goes directly to the needy within your community.
Finally, please remember that hunger is a year round problem, and
not just during the holidays. Contact your local food pantry. Ask
questions. Ask for a tour. You will be amazed at what happens behind
the scenes on a daily basis, year round, to feed the hungry of your
community.

Letter To The Editor
R.I.P. Osama Been Latin. The Homecoming holiday themed float passed
by with this epitaph painted on a tombstone. The festive array of
floats created by the students was the kickoff to the weekend events
and boasted of our students’ united creativity and community pride.
It was a wonderful and successful weekend. But still, that
misspelled name of the “Most Wanted” man on earth was troublesome.
“Most kids don’t even realize that there is still a war going on,”
the older students claimed. I remembered feeling weary at ten years
old, in 1968, still seeing news of Viet Nam on TV. Thinking about
it now, the media made sure even kids noticed and we prayed.
Pittsfield has had tremendous representation in our armed forces.
Fifteen of our sons have lost their lives since WWI translating to
many more citizens bearing the pain of this sacrifice and reaping
the benefits of freedom through the loss of a friend and loved one.
Who is responsible now for instilling a grateful attitude toward
those who still keep the beacons of freedom illuminated?
To the Christmas Tree Lighting Committee, Thank you for allowing the
“Hero” Stars to be part of the celebration to honor those who served
and are serving, those missing in action, and those lost in the line
of duty. It is fitting that, in our veterans’ park, we should
remember.
To the Light Team and Diamond Dave, Thank you for putting those Gold
Stars up at the very top of the tree.
To Ari and Austin, Thank you for helping with the stars Saturday
morning and for allowing me to tell you their stories, stories of
our brave men and women serving this great nation. Please share
these stories with your friends.
To God, Thank You, and Please Protect America and Our Troops.

DFAS announces end-of-year tax, statement availability dates
Retiree and annuitant pay customers of the Defense Finance and
Accounting Service are scheduled to receive their 2012 tax
statements mid-December through January.
Most of the 1099 forms will be available a week
earlier via the online myPay pay account management system (https://mypay.dfas.mil/mypay.aspx) for retired military members and annuitants.
The mailing schedule includes:
-- Annual Retiree Account Statements showing the new payment
including the cost-of-living allowance adjustment for 2013 will be
available through myPay on Dec. 4, and mailed via the U.S. Postal
Service between Dec. 19 and Jan. 10.
-- Internal Revenue Service Form 1099-R tax statements for retirees
will be available on myPay Dec. 13, and mailed via the U.S. Postal
Service between Dec. 19 and Jan. 10.
-- Annuitant Account Statements and Internal Revenue Service Form
1099-R tax statements for annuitants will be available through myPay
on Dec. 15. Annuitants who get these documents via mail can expect
to receive them between Dec. 19 and Jan. 10.
Retirees and annuitants must keep their contact information current,
according to DFAS officials who say the top reason a retiree or
annuitant doesn’t receive their 1099-R is because it is sent to an
old address.
If a retiree or annuitant does not have their correct address on
file, they will experience a significant delay in receiving their
end-of-year documents, said DFAS officials. People who do not have
an active myPay account must call, mail or fax a written request to
DFAS-Cleveland; processing a change of address and reissuing a new
1099-R takes at least 30 days, said officials.
Retirees and annuitants with an active myPay account can decrease
their wait time for an address change and new 1099-R by logging in
and updating their own account. Changes take effect in three to five
business days, and a copy of their 1099R can be printed directly
from myPay.
Information is made available faster electronically, said DFAS
officials. This is why myPay users get their 1099-Rs up to a week
earlier than those who wait for the mail to arrive.
For more information about account maintenance,
1099-R requests, and logging in to myPay, visit the DFAS website at
http://www.dfas.mil/retiredmilitary.html. People without an
online account can contact DFAS at 800-321-1080.
