News From American Legion Peterson-Cram Post 75
For those of you who have a loved one in the service, serving
anywhere, what better gift could you give them than to purchase one
of the Pittsfield American Legion Peterson-Cram Post 75 raffle
tickets for 2013. For a $10.00 donation, you get a chance to have
your number pulled up to five times each month from January to
December 2013. Think of it as a gift of supporting their hometown
American Legion Post that remembers them. The absolute deadline date
for requesting the ticket(s) is December 24, 2012. Contact Diane
Vaughan at 344-0265 or 435-5207 for ticket(s).
The proceeds will go towards the daily operation expenses of the
Post, along with Memorial Day and Veterans Day observances. With
your support of our programs, we can continue to offer a $300.00
scholarship to a graduating senior from Pittsfield Middle High
School. Once again, we aim to honor students in our community with
Boys and Girls State and the annual Junior and Senior Oratorical
Society competition.
If you are a veteran who wants to know more about the American
Legion, contact Post Commander Merrill Vaughan, at his cell number
603-344-0264 or his home number 603-435-5207. We are always looking
for new members or ones new to the area and wish to transfer post
membership.

Letter To The Editor
During these hard economic times we often get caught up in looking
out for ourselves and our needs. The focus tends to go inward as
some of us face self-preservation. Yet even in these times I hear of
some of our small business owners reaching out to help those in
need. It is often tragedy that reveals the character in some people
and the recent Super Storm Sandy is one tragedy that brought out a
sense of pride in our little town of Pittsfield, NH.
I was shown a little article that appeared in the New York Post on
November 16, 2012 about a Pittsfield based business that
demonstrated the spirit of giving that we all should strive for.
Brad Serl, the CEO of The Rustic Crust sent some of his staff and a
truck that carried a wood-fired pizza oven and 1000+ pizzas to Belle
Harbor School in Rockaway Beach. The immediate area had 111 homes
destroyed by the Super Storm, were still without power and had
debris piled high. Rustic Crust, without power, was able to feed
hundreds of families in their time of need.
We should all thank The Rustic Crust for the example they set for
all of us to follow. It made this Pittsfield resident and member of
the Suncook Valley Regional Development Corporation proud to have
The Rustic Crust as a business member of our community and thank
them for employing our residents and being such a great example.
It seems to be politically correct to view business as selfish,
greedy people that care nothing about those around them. The Rustic
Crust is just one example that disproves that stereotype. I know of
so many local small businesses that look for opportunities to give
back. I would challenge this paper to start having a regular article
putting a spot light on these local small businesses. They are our
future and deserve our support.

We had a good time last week at our Christmas party. We visited with
each other, passed around Christmas cards, listened to a story, and
passed presents around the room.
Best Loser of the week was Micky... Congrats! Miss Angel is Irene...
Way to go, keep up the good work and you will be at your goal in no
time. KOPS of the week was Barbara... Kudos. Officer was Suzie. We
had a net loss of 5.8 pounds; good job for it being right in the
middle of our holiday season.
I know we have been busy with parties and lots of food going around.
Just remember to keep making those right choices and ask yourself,
“Do I really need that?” Walk away and if you feel you still need
it, go back and take a small size; that will get rid of the craving.
We discussed the date for the KOPS Honor Society. One member brought
in some fun sayings to play that were all about Christmas songs. We
also sang some Christmas songs and had a really good night.
At TOPS we are all about encouraging one another and knowing that we
have to face those scales every week, helps us stay on track. Some
weeks are good weeks and some not so good, but that is why we go.
Right?
If anyone is interested in joining us, we meet on Tuesday nights at
the St. Stephen’s Church on Main Street in Pittsfield at 5:30 pm for
weigh in and at 6:30 pm for our meeting. We love to see new faces.
Any questions please call Laurel Tiede at 269-8721 or Pat Smith at
435-5333.
Here is a little bit of Christmas trivia. “When a bell rings, an
angel gets its wings.” What was the name of that movie?
Have a great week everyone and see you all lighter next week!

For many years, I’ve intended to have a tailor reproduce for me the
jacket worn by actor Patrick McGoohan in the series “The Prisoner”
occasionally featured on NH Public Television. Somehow, I could
never find anyone willing to take on the task at a reasonable price.
I was advised to check out Silva Threads on Catamount Street, and
I’m very glad I did. Mary Silva was hesitant, but agreed to consider
the job and quote me a price. When I finally got her call, this
modest and talented seamstress named a price I considered very
reasonable, but her humble tone suggested that she feared she was
asking too much! I told her to go ahead, and when I saw the results,
I was beyond satisfied. I was amazed. The jacket she had modified
for me looked as if it had been manufactured that way.
Like her thread work, Silva’s shop is meticulously neat and crammed
with remarkable value. She carries a broad variety of thrift shop
items and gently-used clothing, all in excellent condition and
bargain priced. The tools, clothing, housewares, sewing supplies and
many other things on offer at Silva Threads stand in stark contrast
to the stuff being sold at the Family Dollar across the street, both
in price and in quality. I urge you to check it out, and see for
yourself. I’m glad I did!

PYW Volunteer Of The Year
Each year, PYW recognizes someone who has made a lasting impact, and
helped make our organization the best it can be. We are proud to
announce that Teresa Jackson is PYW’s Volunteer of the Year for
2012. For many years, Teresa has been an integral part of our
volunteer network. She has served on the Board of Directors,
chaperoned trips, and most importantly given her time to hang out
during Drop-In. Teresa is often available at a moment’s notice to
help supervise the youth after school. Her two youngest children
have participated in PYW activities over the past six years and her
granddaughter started attending this year - We hope this means
she’ll be hanging around for another few years! Although she
complains about how cold it is in PYW (even in the summer), she is
always there to lend a hand! We truly appreciate all that Teresa has
done for PYW – Congrats and Thank You!
PYW is always looking for dedicated volunteers to lend a hand. We
would love to have more community members help out during Drop-In
(share your talents and passions), chaperone trips and excursions,
assist with fundraising events, or serve on the Board of Directors.
If you are interested in helping out, please contact Paula at
435-8272.
