The
Pittsfield Food Pantry is holding a Ham and Bean Supper to benefit
its outreach to the community. The all-inclusive meal, including
homemade pies, will be served at the First Congregational Church, 24
Main Street, Pittsfield, on Saturday, May 21st, 5-7 p.m. A
monetary donation is requested.
Pittsfield Area Senior
Center’s monthly events for May will include a Helping Hands craft
session beginning at 9:30 am on Wednesday, May 11th. During
this time, things are made for people who are in need of support.
On Thursday, May 12th, during lunch, birthdays will be celebrated
with cake and ice cream. On Tuesday, May 10th at 12:45 pm, a
Senior Center planning meeting will be held. You are invited
to come and help plan activities and events. On Monday, May
23rd at 9:00 am, a VNA Health Clinic will be held upstairs.

The Loudon
Center Freewill Baptist Church will once again be hosting our annual
Yard and Bake Sale at the church on Clough Hill Road from 8 a.m. to

the Moore Family Gospel Singers. The supper is at 6 p..m. and
the concert is at 7 p.m.

Pittsfield Old Home Day News
Save the Date – Saturday, July 23,
2011 – Pittsfield Old Home Day. The theme of the day is “Super
Heroes Rule the Day!”
The Old Home Day Committee has been hard
at work planning the event. Some traditional activities
planned for the day are: Encore! 2011 on Friday night; Breakfast at
Park St. Baptist Church; Craft Fair at Dustin Park; and the Parade.
Some new things in the works are Bingo; maybe a Scavenger Hunt;
Super Hero Costume Parade (for kids–of any age) and a showing of a
Super Hero (old TV Show or movie).
After the parade, the
official dedication and opening of the Pittsfield Youth Athletic
Park will be held. The Windham Town Band will be performing at
Drake Field. Watch The Sun for more detailed information on
the Old Home Day events.
The Old Home Day Committee is seeking
volunteers for help on Old Home Day – whether you can give a few
hours or plan to help for the day – we need you!! Please call

Doug Towle & The Frisky Hill Historic Restoration Project Walking
Tour May 12th at 6 pm Open for members and non-members.
Pittsfield Historical Society’s (PHS) May program is a one hour long
walking tour of Doug Towle’s Gilmanton hill top restorations on
Route 107n.
To minimize parking safety issues, the public is
encouraged to car pool by meeting at PHS on Elm Street at 5:30.
No pets please.
Bring good walking shoes and dress for the
outdoor weather.
The small group walking tours will visit the
1665 House, Carriage Shed, Corn Crib, the Barn, the Loon Pond
School, and the Water Tower with their tour guide.

Dance presents “A Dancing Smorgasbord” Our 11th year end performance
will be held at the Prospect Mountain High School in Alton on
Saturday, May 7th, with shows at 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm. Tickets

Josiah
Carpenter Library Volunteer Honored
Congratulations are in order for Pittsfield resident Ruth
Strickhart. Mrs. Strickhart has been selected to receive the
Joseph D. Vaughan Award, which is presented annually by the State
Committee on Aging and EngAGING NH, for outstanding leadership or
achievement as a volunteer on behalf of older citizens in New
Hampshire.
Mrs. Strickhart, at 91 years young, has
been a volunteer at the front desk at Josiah Carpenter Library for
the past six years, working three days a week, at 2½ to 3 hours each
day. This is in the afternoons, after she has completed three
hours of volunteer data entry at the Pittsfield Historical Society
one morning each week, and three hours of volunteer work with
multiple supervisory responsibilities at the local food pantry, on
two mornings each week.
There will be a special ceremony for
reward recipients on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at 1:00 pm, at the State
House in Concord. The Library will have a delayed opening that
day so that all staff may attend the ceremony in Mrs. Strickhart’s
honor. The library will open later that day at 3:30 pm.
“The
Power Of Words” Luncheon

Letter
Come June the hanging flower baskets will once again decorate the
streets of Pittsfield. This will be year fifteen.
As
always, the flowers, basket materials, plants, etc. have been
ordered and we will soon have some bills to pay. I’m late
requesting financial help, but we haven’t forgotten the kind people
who make donations to this uniquely Pittsfieldian project.

Movie Night At Josiah Carpenter Library
Friday, May 20th is
Family Movie Night at Josiah Carpenter Library. Made possible
by a generous grant from the Sanderson Fund, Family Movie Night is a
new program at Josiah Carpenter Library. Josiah Carpenter
Library has purchased an MPLC Umbrella License to provide copyright
coverage to allow the public showing of movies.
Movies
will now be shown regularly on our quarterly, Family Movie Night
event and also in conjunction with our Josiah Book Worms Teen Book
Group and our Read-Meet-Talk Book Group for Grown-ups.
Audio video equipment to provide for public viewing, has been
purchased through the Sanderson Fund Grant. This equipment
will be used for movies, and other special programs and guest
speakers.
Family Movie Night is held at 7:00 pm, the third
Friday quarterly in February, May, August, and November. Our
selection for May 20th will be Fly Away Home (1996) rated PG, 107
minutes. Starring: Jeff Daniels as Tom Alden; Anna Paquin as
Amy Alden; Dana Delany as Susan Barnes; Terry Kinney as Uncle Dave.
• Director: Carroll Ballard • Based on a true story, “Fly Away Home”
follows the magical and soaring adventure of a 13 year old girl who
adopts an orphaned flock of geese and teaches them to fly.

Obituaries
Christopher “Shorty” Lawrence, Jr.
Christopher “Shorty” Lawrence, Jr., age 55, of Bristol, NH passed
away on April 22, 2011 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in
Lebanon.
He
was born March 19, 1956 and was the son of Christopher Lawrence, Sr.
and Barbara Merrill (Keyes). Survivors include his mother,
Barbara and step-father, Paul Merrill; sister, Linda Viens; and
brother, Michael Lawrence; as well as his nieces and great nephews.
Following high school, Shorty served as a Hawk Missile Crewman in
the U.S. Army, earning a National Defense Services Medal and a M-16
Rifle Sharpshooter Badge. Shorty proudly made automotive
mechanics his career and attended school consistently to keep
current with the newer models.
Shorty’s true loves were riding Harleys and his cats, Harley and
Silver. He bought and renovated his home in Bristol and
proudly named it the “Ponderosa.”
He
was a true friend and a great relative. He was always there
when anyone needed help. We will never forget him. He
will be deeply missed!
A
memorial service will be scheduled for a later date.
John D. Pereira
John David Pereira, 69, of Concord went home to be with his Heavenly
Father April 28, 2011 after a courageous year long battle with
Mesothelioma.
He
was born on March 4, 1942 in Newport News, Virginia to Gabriel S.
and Grace (Smith) Pereira. He was raised in Hampton, Virginia
and graduated from Hampton High School in 1960.
Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and proudly
served our country for 28 years. He served in all four
divisions of the Marine Corps and loved being in the infantry for
all but two years. During those two years, he was a snare
drummer with the 2nd Marine Division Drum and Bugle Corps. He
served two tours in Vietnam and has received numerous personal,
combat, unit and campaign awards and medals including the Bronze
Star with Combat V. He was commissioned before his second tour
in Vietnam and retired as a First Lieutenant but chose to wear his
First Sergeant enlisted rank.
Upon retirement from the Marine Corps, he became a Naval Science
Instructor with the NJROTC Unit at Manchester West High School for
14 ½ years, retiring in June 2010.
One
of his favorite past times was playing as a drummer with the Freese
Brother’s Big Band for 18 years.
He
was a loving husband, Dad and Granddaddy who will be missed greatly.
Family members include his wife of 44 years, Patricia (Crabtree)
Pereira of Concord, N.H., two sons, Douglas J. Pereira and his wife
Laurie of Hampton, VA, James A. Pereira and his wife, Stacie, of
Parker, CO, and a daughter, Teri Lynn Lewis and her husband, Jason,
of Winterport, ME. He loved and doted on his seven
grandchildren, Emma and Sophia Pereira of Hampton, VA, Cameron and
Gianna Pereira of Parker, CO, and Kyle, Grace and Cooper Lewis of
Winterport, Maine. He also left behind a sister, June
Shoesmith of Fairport, NY, and a brother, Gabriel Pereira and his
wife Joyce of Hampton, VA. In addition, he also leaves behind
several nieces and nephews. What he cherished most in life was
his relationship with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. One
of his favorite verses in the bible was John 3:16, “For God so loved
the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes
in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

funeral service will be held Friday, May 6 at 10:00am at Epsom Bible
Church, 398 Black Hall Road, Epsom, NH. Burial will follow at
1:30PM at the New Hampshire Veteran’s Cemetery in Boscawen, NH.
