VA Extends “Agent Orange” Benefits to More Veterans
Parkinson’s Disease, Two Other Illnesses Recognized
Relying on an independent study by the Institute of Medicine
(IOM), Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki decided to
establish a service-connection for Vietnam Veterans with three
specific illnesses based on the latest evidence of an
association with the herbicides referred to Agent Orange.
The illnesses affected by the recent decision are B cell
leukemias, such as hairy cell leukemia; Parkinson’s disease; and
ischemic heart disease.
Used in Vietnam to defoliate trees and remove concealment
for the enemy, Agent Orange left a legacy of suffering and
disability that continues to the present. Between January 1965
and April 1970, an estimated 2.6 million military personnel who
served in Vietnam were potentially exposed to sprayed Agent
Orange.
In practical terms, Veterans who served in Vietnam during
the war and who have a “presumed” illness don’t have to prove an
association between their illnesses and their military service.
This “presumption” simplifies and speeds up the application
process for benefits.
The Secretary’s decision brings to 15 the number of presumed
illnesses recognized by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
“We must do better reviews of illnesses that may be
connected to service, and we will,” Shinseki added. “Veterans
who endure health problems deserve timely decisions based on
solid evidence.”
Additional information about Agent Orange and VA’s services
and programs for Veterans exposed to the chemical are available
at
www.publichealth.va.gov/exposures/agentorange

4H
Kicks Off Their 1st Annual Fall Clean Up And Planting At The
BCEP!
We had a great turnout for our first annual Fall cleanup and Mum
planting at the BCEP. 4-H members cleaned up and weeded the 4-H
gardens, planted Mums and added pumpkins and corn stalks to the
gardens in front of the BCEP office. Even during this busy
season for 4-H, members found the time to help their local
community.
Thank you to all who attended: Evan Murzan, Joseph
Murzan, Naoni Murzan, Harrison Worster, Sophie Worster, Griffin
Worster, Nick Goodwin, Chris Goodwin and all the 4-H leaders for
their help with this project. Thank you to Mountain Ledge for
donating the Mums, Elm Terrace Farm for donating pumpkins. Thank
you to Earl at the BCEP for always staying late to let us in and
removing the waste for us. We’re looking forward to next year’s
Spring clean up and planting and another Fall clean up and
planting at the BCEP.
It’s Poinsettia Time Again
Autumn has arrived,
the cooler temperatures and the glorious colorful trees, set us
in the mood for the season. Although perhaps only
Halloween and Thanksgiving are on our minds at this time, right
around the corner we will see December, snow and the holidays.
Now is the time, to once again, order your poinsettias from The
Friends of the Josiah Carpenter Library. The poinsettias
are locally grown at Ledgeview Greenhouses of Loudon. In an
effort to help the community, The Friends believe in patronizing
locally owned and operated businesses.
You may purchase your
poinsettias in the following ways. Order forms will be available
at the Carpenter Library, Clark’s Grain Store, our website at:
http://library.pittsfield-nh.com/friends.htm or by
contacting Friends members, Paula Belliveau, Carol Grainger,
Judith MacLellan, or Mary Schelble. Orders will be taken now
through November 5, 2009. Prices will remain the same as last
year. All monies and orders must be received at the library by 6
