Letter To The Editor

The New Hampshire House of Representatives is in recess for the summer and will reconvene in September to address Governor Hassan’s vetoes. Throughout the past few weeks, Governor Hassan has vetoed many of the good (and great) bills agreed upon by the House in the Senate. One of the most recent vetoes from the Governor is the proposed Constitutional Carry bill that has passed many states such as our neighboring Vermont and gives law abiding citizens the right to fully exercise their Second Amendment rights. The Governor also vetoed several bills that would provide parents a greater voice in their students’ education and would translate greater control to local communities.

From a bill that would require schools to give parental notice before teaching sexually explicit conduct to a bill that would allow parents to opt their children out of Common Core sanctioned testing, the Governor has taken a stand with state bureaucrats and not with the parents and community members in our towns. Last and most importantly, the Governor vetoed HB1 and HB2, better known as the budget. The budget put before Governor Hassan was produced from laborious effort by the House and the Senate and is a good budget that restores former concerns from the House budget and increases funding to charter schools.

I fully support the Second Amendment and I believe that parents and municipalities should have the strongest voice in a student’s education. Additionally, I believe the state should have a fiscally responsible budget that addresses our fiscal needs in the Granite State while maintaining our needs and responsibilities. Therefore, when it comes to address these bills, I plan on voting to overturn the Governor’s vetoes.

Northwood Recreation Update

Submitted By Heather Heigis - Recreation Commission Chair

The Northwood Recreation Department’s early registration deadline for fall soccer is quickly approaching. Register by August 3rd and enjoy a reduced rate and ensure a spot on the team.  Teams will fill up quickly after August 3rd and space becomes limited. The cost for 3 year olds and kindergarten is $40.00, 1st - 6th grade is $55.00.  After August 3rd there is a $10 late charge.

Why are we so crazy about the soccer deadline??

At the Recreation Department we understand summer is the worst possible time to make a deadline. We are fully aware of the frustration of parents who miss signing their child up for soccer especially if that means late fees or possibly not getting on a team.

So, I wanted to take just a second to explain to you why we have such a firm date. Once we find out how many children we have participating in the program, we divide the kids into teams that allow for your child to have the maximum amount of play time. In a nutshell we want you to get your money’s worth and a positive experience for your child. There is nothing worse for you or your child than only getting to play a small portion of the game because the teams were over-filled.  Once we know how many teams we have, we work to build a game schedule with the other towns.

OK, ready for it… here comes the tricky part. If, after the deadline, we get an onslaught of late ad-ons, our only option is to add them to existing teams. As you can imagine, we would get a lot of angry emails if a child is on a team of 30 kids. So, we do need to close teams when the number of kids reach 12.

Now that you know the process, you get to choose to roll the dice and hope for open spots after the deadline and get to pay the complementary $10 late fee or register before the deadline ensuring a spot on the team.

Hope you have an excellent summer and thank you for your understanding.

Visit www.northwoodnh.org for additional registration information and information about these programs.  Details can be found in our Brochure on the website. Or contact the Recreation Department at [email protected] or 942-5586 x209 with questions.
