Northwood Firefighters Use New Equipment
At Prescribed Fire
Northwood firefighters receive valuable training during a recent
control burn
event and use equipment purchased with grant funding.
Northwood Fire Rescue has received two forestry grants in the past
three years through the Division of Forest and Lands of the US
Forest Service. The Volunteer Fire Assistance grants have allowed
the department to purchase items that assist fire departments to
have up-to-date gear and essential tools on hand for firefighting.
In
2012, the department purchased all new personal protective clothing-
helmets, goggles, gloves, Nomex pants and shirts with the grant
funds. Members previously had to use their own clothes or buy their
own Nomex clothing. Nomex is a flame resistant fabric created by
Dupont to help give firefighters protection when exposed to serious
hazards like flash fire and molten metal splash. It is very useful
when fighting structure fires or forest/grass fires, which require
walking through areas that are burning.
The
grant received in 2014 allowed the purchase of a portable pump, new
hose and new fittings. The new pump allows firefighters to easily
transport the pump into hard to get areas and “suck water” out of
any type of water source.
The
recent prescribed fire (controlled burn) was conducted at Harmony
Hill Farm, and covered over 10 acres of field. The effort provides
real life training for firefighters as they can see how quick
conditions can change and also see how weather, topography, and fuel
types affect fire. It is good for the ecosystem; a controlled fire
is beneficial in several ways, as it promotes growth of trees, grass
and other plants by adding natural nutrients back into the soil,
removes unwanted invasive plants and helps prevent trees from
overcrowding. It also minimizes spread of ticks and reduces fuel
build-up over a period of time that can cause extreme and sudden
fire activity.
