An Open Letter To Senator Ayotte 

In her reply to constituents who ask her to support a Constitutional Amendment to declare that corporations are not people and do not have the rights given to persons in the Constitution and its Bill of Rights, Senator Ayotte says, “While I appreciate your writing to express your concerns about the Citizens United decision, I believe that First Amendment rights must be vigorously defended and not abridged.”

Senator Ayotte is a lawyer, and was appointed NH’s Attorney General by Governor Benson. I would guess that she is not a constitutional scholar, nor has she apparently read the writings of our founders, or she would recognize and strongly support their concerns about the power of corporations. Our founders did not intend that corporations should have 1st amendment rights to free speech, nor the equal protection of the law that those who made the 14th amendment possible intended for people.

Corporations are not people. They are creations of the state, for specific purposes, and we the people are supposed, through our elected officials, to control them. We have allowed them to run wild, to corrupt our government, and to put their profits before our general welfare; the general welfare that is a purpose of our Constitution.

I would also remind the Senator that individuals who are affiliated with corporations are people and may individually express their freedom of speech and that when money equals speech, freedom of speech for the vast majority is being suppressed due to the inequity of wealth distribution.

Dolores (Colleto) Musso

Dolores (Colleto) Musso, of Ridge Road, passed away on July 24, 2013 at home. Born on July 25, 1930 and raised in Haverhill, MA, daughter of Antonio and Evangeline (Fisette) Colleto. She attended Haverhill schools and earned her GED while raising five children.

She worked as a winder at Western Electric, short order cook at Downy Flake Donut Shop, cashier at Larry’s Clam Bar, head cashier at IGA, caregiver, babysitter and second mom to many neighborhood kids.  The most important job, which she lovingly embraced, was being mom and dad to her five children.

She loved to play canasta, swim, garden, cook and care for her grandchildren. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting, needlework, canning, and bowling.

She was the widow of Corporal Mario Musso who died in 1963 and is predeceased by a sister Stella Pews. Family members include five children, Evangeline Musso-Ferrara of Newton, Cecelia Hart and fiancé David LaFleche of Fremont, Joseph Musso and wife Rhonda of Danville, Elizabeth Pontacoloni and husband Tulio of Northwood, and Daniel Musso of Brentwood; thirteen grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; brother Antonio Colleto and wife Roberta of Bradford, MA; sister-in-law Janet Colleto and sister Theresa Zingale both of Haverhill, MA; an uncle, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A celebration of life will be held at Sawyer’s Banquet Hall in Plaistow on Sunday, August 4, 2013 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Concord Regional Visiting Nurse Association, The Slusser Center, 30 Pillsbury Street, Concord, NH 03301 or online at www.crvna.org.

Eleanor M. Johnston

Eleanor Mary (Law) Johnston, 90, passed peacefully into the Kingdom of Heaven July 25th at Presidential Oaks, Concord  after a period of failing health.

Eleanor was born May 23, 1923 to Arthur and Clara Law. She grew up in Salem, NH growing up and working at Law Dairy Farm on Pond Street. She is predeceased by brothers Arthur, Milton and Warren and sisters Mildred and Marilyn.

She graduated from Lawrence General Hospital School of Nursing in 1943 as an RN and proudly worked there for 40 years. She was a mentor to many young nurses in her career. She wound down her career working another 10 years at Berkeley Retirement Home, also serving on the Board there for many years. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Methuen and served as a Sunday School teacher, on the Mission Committee, Scholarship Fund, Search Committee, Pastoral Relations, President of the Women’s Federation, as a Deaconess and ran the Church suppers with “her team” for 40+ years. Recently she attended United Methodist in Pembroke.

She was married for 43 years to William John Johnston who passed in 1990. She was secretary for his business Bill Johnston Scale Service. They adopted and lovingly raised 4 children. She was predeceased by her daughter Judith and is survived by daughter Rev. Cynthia Strosahl of Biddeford, sons Peter Johnston of Allenstown and Paul Johnston of Northwood. She has 13 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

She resided most of her adult life in Methuen, spending the last 15 years in Allenstown and then Concord. She was an influence and inspiration to many and will be sorely missed.

Funeral/burial will be August 3rd at First Baptist Church and Walnut Grove Cemetery with arrangements by Pollard Funeral Home, Methuen.
