Bean Hole Bash

Northwood Fire-Rescue has been discussing the possibility of reviving the Northwood Bean Hole Bash as a community project.  We are looking for other Northwood organizations who would be interested in participating in this project that has many opportunities for fund raising or letting people know about your mission.

Our next meeting will be at 7:00 pm, January 31, 2013 at the Northwood Community Center. We sincerely hope you will send a representative to the meeting to add your unique ideas and comments. Let’s have fun working and getting to know each other to celebrate Northwood!

Northwood Santa Helpers

The members of Northwood Fire-Rescue would like to take this opportunity to thank the citizens and merchants of Northwood for helping to make this year’s Northwood Santa Helpers an overwhelming success. Due to your tremendous response, we were able to wrap gifts of toys and clothing for 63 Northwood children.  Thank you for brightening the lives of these children and helping them to experience the joy of opening gifts of new toys and winter clothing.

We appreciate your continued support of this neighbor helping neighbor program which would not be possible without your assistance. While we are not able to recognize everyone providing assistance, we would like to thank Northwood Human Services Director Sue Holden for her invaluable coordinating assistance.

Nottingham Winter Farmers’ Market

Northwood’s Middle School Students

Calling all U.S. history buffs; collectors of antiques, artifacts and books; and all who have lived in, or visited, a foreign country!  Northwood seventh and eighth grade social studies students would like to invite you to our classroom to share your knowledge, skills, collections and exciting information about America’s history and/or world cultures. This year, seventh grade students are studying geography and cultures.  Eighth grade students are studying American history from the Civil War through the 20th century.

CBNA Welcomes First Inductees Into Its New Athletic Hall Of Fame

Coe-Brown Northwood Academy (CBNA) inducted the first four members into its newly established Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, December 22, at the annual CBNA Alumni Basketball Games. CBNA Athletic Director Matt Skidds introduced the inductees, reading a profile of each one. CBNA Trustee Lori Bassett then presented each inductee with a commemorative plaque. Hall of Fame nomination forms for 2013 are currently available on the CBNA website, www.coebrown.org.

CBNA trustee and alumnus Bob Bailey’s (Class of 1945) contributions to the Academy’s athletic program are legendary. As a student at Coe-Brown in the 1940s he was an avid baseball player. But it was his contributions in the years after that were recognized at the induction ceremony. Bob was single-handedly responsible for many of the Academy’s current athletic fields. In 1994, using equipment from his own construction company, Bob began transforming the rocky ledge across the street from Coe-Brown’s main building into track, soccer and baseball fields, as well as an outdoor basketball court. Nine years later he worked his magic again, installing four new tennis courts. The former chicken range on the hill is often referred to as “Bob’s Field of Dreams.”

Wade R.D. Sauls, a member of Coe-Brown’s Class of 1984, is an accomplished athlete. He was a four-year member and starter on the CBNA Boys Varsity Soccer team and was voted team MVP in his junior and senior years. His 69 career goals are an impressive statistic for the high-school level. In basketball, Wade was a four-year member of the varsity squad and was starting guard on the 1982 and 1984 State Championship teams. He was team MVP his junior and senior years. Wade’s name graces the CBNA gymnasium as a 1,000 point scorer and he was the New Hampshire Coaches Association Free Throw Shooting Champion in his senior year. Wade went on to play both soccer and basketball at Plymouth State University.

Dave Smith’s name is synonymous with athletics at Coe-Brown Northwood Academy. As Boys Varsity Basketball head coach, Dave led his team to the Division II State Semi-Finals last year in an exciting match against Portsmouth High School. Coe-Brown celebrated Dave’s 450th career win in 2008. The New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association inducted Dave into its Hall of Fame in 2009. The NHIAA cited Dave’s 42 years of coaching various sports as well as his distinguished career as a teacher, athletic director, assistant principal, guidance counselor, guidance director and, of course, headmaster. In addition to his coaching and administrative responsibilities, Dave has served on the New Hampshire Officials Association.

Ginger Sanford Snow, Class of 1989, is the first female inductee into the Coe-Brown Athletic Hall of Fame. During her high school years, Ginger was a member of the Coe-Brown varsity softball, volleyball and basketball teams. She was the first person to play varsity all four years in all three of these sports. As a basketball player, Ginger’s name was added to the Academy’s list of 1,000 point scorers in 1989. Following high school, she was awarded a full basketball scholarship to the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. Ginger also had a long and distinguished career as a professional football player. She was a wide receiver for the Boston Militia for nine seasons and was selected to the All Star Team three times.

Coe-Brown Northwood Academy (CBNA), founded in 1867, is a small co-educational public-private secondary school accepting students in grades 9-12 and offering the highest quality curriculum of studies. CBNA Sophomores Selected In VFW Voice Of Democracy Contest

Coe-Brown Northwood Academy proudly announces the local winners of the Voice of Democracy Essay Contest sponsored by the VFW. Thirty-eight CBNA sophomores participated in the contest with the assistance of their English teacher Mrs. Kathy Biery.  The winners, Katie Tomasewski, first; Ariel Clachar, second; and Hannah Eaton, third were selected by members of the Northwood VFW Post and were presented with certificates and checks by VFW Post Adjutant Mr. Dan Barnhart at a recent school assembly.  The Voice of Democracy Program is open to students in grades 9-12, who are enrolled in a public, private or parochial high school or home study program in the United States and its territories. This year’s theme is “Is the Constitution Relevant?"

To enter the contest students were required to record a reading of their essays to a CD. Entries are three to five minutes and are judged according to originality, content and vocal delivery. Paper copies of the essays are also submitted. Entries begin at the post level. Winning students then have the opportunity to compete on the state and national levels. Congratulations to these talented students.

CBNA Theatre To Present One Act Showcase

Coe-Brown Northwood Academy Theatre will proudly present a showcase of student and faculty directed one act plays on Wednesday and Thursday, January 16 and 17, 2013, at 7 pm in the Gerrish Gym on the CBNA campus.  The evening will feature the Sherlock Holmes spoof A Holmes Family Christmas by Judy GeBauer directed by senior Jordan McAllister featuring Kyle Bousquet, Colton Rush and Logan MacCrae; the hilarious and heartwarming comedy Miss Kentucky by Allison Williams directed by senior Kestyn Ritchotte featuring Marianna Barnhart and Samantha Corwin; a comedy that examines the meaning of theatre Another Beautiful Story by John Clancy directed by senior Allison Irish featuring Jessica Gallant, Taylor Pitre, Erin Barnard and Mason Jimino and an adaptation of Euripides’ classic Greek tragedy The Trojan Women by Ellen McLaughlin directed by faculty member Elizabeth Lent featuring Marianna Barnhart, Noelle Struthers, Gwyneth Horne, Ashlyn Correia, Tim Cedrone, Ryan Cunningham, Jared Neal, Olivia Anatone, Regan Butler, Jessica Cedrone, Sophia Chartier, Julia Collins, Samantha Corwin, Rachel Dallaire, Jesse Felber, Jessica Gallant, Faith Hayes, Allison Irish, Moriah Mazzochi, Kestyn Ritchotte, Jordan Roach, Colton Rush and Ryan Wadleigh. General admission tickets are $5 and will be available at the door.

News From The Second Graders At Northwood School!

……..And he’s off!  Our Flat Stanley paper dolls have been mailed out to friends and relatives all over the continental United States as well as to a few other parts of the world.  We imagine he is having a wonderful time on all his exciting adventures!  A few of Stanley’s visits are over and his hosts have sent him back to us with letters and pictures detailing all of his amazing experiences! We are mapping his locations and calculating how many miles he has traveled.

This project (based upon Jeff Brown’s book Flat Stanley) is connecting reading, writing, math, and social studies. We eagerly look forward to each day’s mail to see if any more letters have come back to us.

Mrs. Cunningham, Mrs. Gibson, and all the second graders would like to thank the families and friends who are supporting this fun learning project!

Northwood Softball Baseball Association

The NSBA is now accepting coaching applications for the 2013 season. If you would like to be a coach, please complete the 2013 Coaching Application located under the “Handout - Form” section on the website and select Coaching Application along with the Background Check and Background Check Reduced Fee form.

Applications must be received by February 9th to be considered for coaching.

In order to coach in the NSBA you need to submit your application by the deadline, submit to a background check, be Cal Ripken Certified, be available for Opening Day, Closing Ceremonies and have the availability for practices and games as required.

Letter

Jim Hadley’s Letter Of Jan. 2

I did not say in my letter of Dec. 27 that Special Education costs are “fixed.”  Rather, I said that they are not under the School’s control (my actual word) in the same way that other expenditures are.  

Mr. Hadley provides the evidence of how costly this can be in noting that one student cost “approximately $270,000.”  (I am informed by School Board member Dave Ruth that this student was not a Londonderry resident when these costs were incurred, as Mr. Hadley wrongly suggests, and that the School did have an obligation to pay them.)

But note that if another student with similar needs appears, the school is mandated to meet those needs, and given the constraints on other areas of the budget, the money must come from the elementary school budget for regular education.  I appreciate Tim Jandebeur for making this point in his Jan. 9 letter: “The kids, specifically the regular education kids are the unintended casualties.”

Mr. Hadley also references an article he distributed to the Budget Committee, “A Win-Win Approach to Reducing Special Education Costs,” suggesting that “there are ‘best practices’ available to school districts so that they can be operated much more efficiently.”  

The good news is that many of these practices are being used by the School on its own and, in some cases, in cooperation with the SAU and the other SAU towns to hold down costs while meeting the needs of the student IEP’s (Individual Education Plans).  And these practices were described to the Budget Committee by the School Special Ed Coordinator at one of our meetings.  Unfortunately, Mr. Hadley may have missed this briefing before riding to the rescue with an article.

2013 Vintage Oval Racing At Lake Shore Farm

The Northwood Crankpullers Snowmobile Club would like to remind everyone of our Vintage Oval Race with a Dance that evening on Saturday, January 19th. 

Registration begins at 7:30 am and Racing at 10 am, so come join us as a spectator or in competition.  A spectator entrance fee of $7.00, lots of great family fun and as usually our infamous food trailer will be there. We will be having a dance that evening at the Bow Lake Grange Hall in Strafford, NH. Doors open at 7 pm and dancing starts at 8 pm, BYOB. Tickets will be available at the door or in advance at $15.00/pp.

James A. O’Rourke IV

James A. O’Rourke IV, 29, passed away at his home on Friday, January 4, 2013.

Jimmy was born in Concord on September 22, 1983 to Jim and Sharon (Winden) O’Rourke. He grew up in the small town of Deerfield, graduated from Concord High School in 2002, then went on to attend Plymouth State University where he made many friends and memories.

Jimmy was passionate about snowboarding, golfing, cooking and his yellow Volkswagen GTI. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and his fun loving personality is sure to be missed.

Jimmy is survived by his parents Jim and Sharon O’Rourke, brother Dan O’Rourke, sister Hannah O’Rourke, grandfather Richard Winden and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make a donation in Jimmy’s name to the New Hampshire SPCA, 104 Portsmouth Street, Stratham, NH 03885 in memory of his love for animals.
