Letter To The Editor
I am deeply concerned about the information
we are receiving about Northern Pass and so went to web site for
Deerfield,
http://www.northernpass.us/deerfield-nh.htm
Most interesting is the statement by Lisa
Wolford of the Deerfield Planning Board that she had sent letters to
all 70 abutters of the power lines. Further that people voted
against Northern Pass for our community but I wonder how many voting
against the project know that the taxes to be paid by our highest
tax payer would reduce their taxes by about $1.50 per thousand or
$450 per 300 hundred thousand of assessed value.
While I am concerned about the height causing
view problems can they be any worse than the present towers and
lines? What I am more looking at is we will get natural power
without burning coal, oil or other products and save our air
quality. If you have Asthma in family that should be just as much a
concern. I am further amazed that many say NH won’t benefit but
since all electricity going to a central grid can be sold to state
most in need at any one time I see a benefit albeit not all ours.
I would like to see more before the hysteria
of the group think causes our elected officials to turn away that
which could benefit society by cleaner air.
Admittedly there are costs to most industry
and the cost of high power lines may just be our less than
beneficial societal cost to have enough electricity for the
population. But at least in saving the air pollution that those
with children with asthma or other breathing problems will be safer.

Neil English, A Complete Basket Case
The Northwood Historical Society will be
hosting a harvest supper and program on November 12th at the
Community Hall in the Northwood narrows. The Program will be given
by Neil English of Epsom on the ash splint basket making traditions
of the Wabanaki tribes of Maine and the Canadian Maritimes which
include Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Maliseet and Mikmaq tribes.
Neil’s Interest in the basket making of these
tribes stems from the fact that his Great Grandfather, Everett Scott
was a Penobscot Indian. Neil’s “collection” is constantly growing
and includes examples from each of the four tribes. Some of the
baskets date back to 1835. Neil will guide you on the trail of the
brown ash and sweet grass basket, the utilitarian feather basket, on
to baskets that hold a single sewing thimble, and to fancy Victorian
styles. He will discuss how the craft declined in the 1940’s but
made a come back in the 1970’s. Come listen to this great local
speaker.
The Harvest supper will be potluck and begin
at 6:00pm. Please bring your own utensils and plate. Drinks will be
provided. The program will begin at 7:00. See you there.

REPORT CARD
To the Editor,
I’d like to opine on some issues specific to
Northwood School. It’s easy to harp, however we have reached a point
where improvements are being made and you should know that too.
These are “my” opinions.
* The SAU. We have a new Superintendent, Dr.
Bob Gadomski, Special Education Director Scott Reuning and Business
Administrator Marjorie Whitmore. Without singling out anyone except
to say that Dr. Bob seems to know that everything, correctly, comes
from the top, this new Administration has made remarkable and
positive changes. Energy! Great start guys.
Studies. We have a new SAU Management Study
that is being implemented and a great help. Shortly we will have the
results of a comprehensive Special Education Audit that will give us
more help.
* The Budget. It’s not quite finished but is
substantially reduced and honest.
* Teacher and support staff contracts are
ongoing and we expect to bring approvable ones to you in March.
* 6 teacher retirements. We saved more than
expected, 91K the first year. That’s allowing us to fix some safety
issues and purchase needed items. A party was held for those six
with about 70 attendees. Great fun!
* Education. No specifics but there is a new
“feel” to our school.
A better working School Board, a vastly
improved SAU and in Principal Hartford’s opinion the best school
start up since he has been here are all part of it. Attitude! We are
getting there.
A budget, a support staff and teacher
contract that you will approve are goals for this year. Technology
is an area that we need your help on. Without hardware, software and
training our students will not be able to keep up with their peers
here in NH, never mind the US or World.
Thanks for your continued support,
Tim Jandebeur,
Northwood
