Several
community members attended a genealogical workshop given by Tylene
Jousse (sitting 5th from the right) and Judy Ericksen (center) on
behalf of the Else Cilley Chapter, NSDAR, at the chapter owned
Nottingham Square Schoolhouse, a National Registered Historic
Building. After a general introduction to genealogical research
where several hints were given, Tylene and Judy assisted attendees
individually. Women interested in joining the DAR are encouraged to
attend an Else Cilley meeting. We will be participating in the
Nottingham Days celebrations with a booth on Saturday, September
18th. The DAR is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women’s
service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving
American history and securing America’s future through education.
The public is always welcome to attend. For more information, visit

Letter
Holding signs at
the polls, I came back over and over to President Obama’s speech at
the Democratic National Convention this year. The words he spoke
that hit me the hardest were the words about citizenship: “...a word
at the very heart of our founding, a word at the very essence of our
democracy, the idea that this country only works when we accept
certain obligations to one another and to future generations.”
He
went on to talk about our shared responsibilities: “We, the people,
recognize that we have responsibilities as well as rights; that our
destinies are bound together; that a freedom which asks only, what’s
in it for me, a freedom without a commitment to others, a freedom
without love or charity or duty or patriotism, is unworthy of our
founding ideals, and those who died in their defense.”
One of the
most important duties of citizenship is to vote. But even
before we vote, doing our homework is essential. We live in an age
of information. There is a wealth of information out there, in our
libraries, on the Internet, in our newspapers, and from our
candidates. At least I hope that our candidates will be providing
information about themselves!
In 2010 we elected many candidates
whose agendas and priorities surprised and alarmed us. Whether
it be laws about guns, radical budget cuts, attacks on women’s
healthcare or any of the many other bills that weren’t what most of
us were expecting, we bear some responsibility for them. We didn’t
do our homework.
We are all proud to be Americans. Let’s pledge
to each other to take up the responsibilities of citizenship. Let’s
promise each other to cast educated and thoughtful votes.

Letter To The Editor
I would like to introduce
myself as a candidate for State Representative for the Town of
Northwood. My name is Bruce Hodgdon and I am a native of Northwood
where I have attended Brookside School in the Northwood Narrows,
Northwood Elementary School and Coe-Brown Academy. My wife
Sherry and I have two children, a son David, daughter Jen, and six
delightful grand-children.
I am president of Hodgdon & Son, Inc.,
a construction company you may have noticed on projects for the Town
of Northwood, Northwood Elementary School, Coe-Brown Academy,
Northwood Meadows, Northwood Fire Department, road grading in
Northwood and many other projects in the surrounding communities.
I believe in limited government, fiscal responsibility, reducing
regulatory burdens on small business and homeowners, protecting
individual liberties and improving state government efficiency. By
achieving these goals we will see increases in paychecks, small
business growth and the confidence to return workers to the work
place and hire new workers. I would be honored to represent the Town
of Northwood and ask the residents to consider placing their trust
in me to represent them. I encourage you to contact me with
any input or questions you may have. Please e-mail me at
[email protected]
or by phone at 942-5264.
