The Coe
Brown Alumni Association would like to congratulate the following
graduates for receiving the Alumni Scholarships.
The
current graduates of 2012 that received the scholarships were
Gregory Hatfield (attending University of New Hampshire), Courtney
Turcotte (attending University of Vermont), and Thomas Masison
(attending University of New Hampshire).
There
was one alumnus chosen and that scholarship went to Kelly Brown, who
is attending The University of Massachusetts (Amherst).
Summer
is here! Time to clean out your barns, sheds, and houses of unwanted
"treasures." On July 7 from 9 am to 1 pm there will be a variety of
those "treasures" at the Yard Sale at 113 School Street at the
Northwood Advent Christian Church (Route 107 in the Narrows).
Included in this yard sale are treasures, such as Retro 50s sound
equipment, Old British Garrard record player, 1960s Hammond organ
with 25 note pedals, and an antique Minshall-Estey organ. Come and
see what other treasures we have. There will also be a bake sale and
hot dogs. If it rains, it will be held inside. Sponsored by the
Ladies Mission Group.
Coe Brown Northwood Academy will be holding their 23rd Annual Boys
Basketball Clinic for boys in grades 1-10. Session I will be held
July 9, 10 and 11 for grades 6-10 and session II will be held July
12, 13 and 14 for grades 1-5. Please call Coe Brown Northwood
Academy for more information at 942-5531 or go to the website
www.coebrown.org.
Harvey
Lake Watershed Association To Meet
The
Harvey Lake Watershed Association will host a general membership
meeting Friday, July 6, at 6:30 pm at the public beach/boat launch
on Shore Drive.
The
association is a volunteer group of Harvey Lake residents who
monitor the quality of the lake’s water by regular testing through
the state’s Volunteer Lake Assessment Program (VLAP), manage the
summer Lake Host program, and organize volunteer weed watchers who
search the lake for signs of invasive species. These are your
neighbors whose primary mission is to protect Harvey Lake for the
enjoyment of all. If you care about the lake, your attendance at
this meeting would be most welcome.
The
meeting will be held at the boat launch to give members a chance to
see the area and discuss the possibility of a campaign to improve
the surroundings.
For more
information, please call Bob Charest, president of the association,
at 892-1684.

Letter
Four recent pieces of news caught my eyes. First, National
Geographic had an article about our eastern coastline being a hot
spot for sea level rise,
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2012/06/120625-sea-level-rise-east-coast-us-science-nature-climate-change/.
Second, the state of NC wants to pass a law about how to measure
this: no planning is allowed to use any predictions that are not
based on extrapolating historical trends because "sea level rise" is
a leftist term,
http://newswatch.nationalgeographic.com/2012/06/07/north-carolina-legislature-mulls-ban-on-sea-level-rise-projections/.
Third, the NH GOP held a meeting June 25th at our Legislative Office
Building in Concord to discuss how a non-binding UN resolution
passed several decades ago is going to ruin our country and steal
our freedom if we attempt to create land use planning, bike paths or
parks http://kevinavard.com/2012/06/agenda-21-jack-kimble/ and

Fourth, Colorado is burning
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/story/2012-06-27/colorado-wildfire/55851488/1
I grew
up in a scientifically oriented family. My father, a Republican, was
a surgeon, and we surely don’t want our surgeons to decide that
scientific knowledge can be dispensed within favor of ideology. So I
am always amazed at what has happened to the political party my dad
belonged to when it comes to science. It would appear that there is
something to the statement that "reality has a liberal bias."

Northwood
Community Service Volunteers Needed
The
Northwood Cemetery Trustees are looking for assistance in several
maintenance projects that need to be completed at the Northwood
cemeteries. Whether you are a community member who has a few hours
to contribute or a Coe Brown Academy student looking to complete
required community service hours, your help is needed and will be
appreciated. The historic fence that frames the cemetery next to the
Northwood Congregational Church is in need of painting to bring it
back to its original beauty. Several projects need to be completed
at other locations and you are welcome to participate at whatever
level your schedule allows. For information contact Janet at
942-5187.

Chestnut
& Cape Provides Matching Funds to "Cap Off" Chesley Memorial Library
Sign Project
Have you
noticed the new sign outside the Chesley Memorial Library?
Thanks
to the support of our community, the Friends of the Chesley Memorial
Library have successfully completed the first phase of library sign
project, including the installation of granite posts and a large
sign board.
The
second (and final) phase of the project will include designing and
building a weather-deterring "cap" for the sign, as well as
landscaping. Fund raising efforts are underway to raise the
additional $3,000 needed to finish the project.
Curt
Naleid, Northwood resident and owner of Chestnut and Cape, a
construction management and general contracting firm specializing in
technically challenging and detailed construction, has generously
offered to donate a dollar for every dollar raised for the second
phase until the goal is reached. "The library is a valuable resource
to this community and this great opportunity for individuals and
local business to show their support. We are happy to be a part of
it." commented Curt.
The
Friends of the Chesley Memorial Library hope to complete the sign in
time for the celebration of National Library Month in September,
during which they plan to have an official unveiling and reception
to recognize the many generous supporters of the library and this
project.
For more information about Chestnut and Cape, visit
www.ChestnutandCape.com.
To donate, contact Sarah Ramsey at 942-5525, or mail checks to:
Friends of the Chelsey Memorial Library, 8 Mountain Avenue,
Northwood, NH 03261.
Thank
You
The
Chesley Memorial Library Board of Trustees would like to thank the
family and friends of Dolores McDuffee Bushnell for donating two
wooden magazine spinner racks in her memory.
Dolores
was an avid reader and a longtime patron of the library. Library
staff always enjoyed visiting with Dolores and appreciated her
enthusiasm for reading. Her husband William "Bill" Bushnell
presented the spinner racks to the Library Trustees at their May
meeting. The wooden spinner racks provide a touch of elegance (much
nicer than the old metal rack!) and provide better access to the
library’s magazine collection. Please stop in to see the new spinner
racks… and check out a magazine at the same time!
Northwood Recreation Update
Submitted By Kathy Coe, Recreation Director
Join the
Northwood Recreation Department on July 14th from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm
as we honor our men and women in uniform who have and are currently
serving our country.
We will be holding the first concert of our 2nd Annual Summer
Concert Series. The concert will feature Scott Thurston, The NH 39th
Army National Guard Band, and Jimmy Lehoux.
Scott
Thurston is a native of Penacook, NH. He will be performing the
National Anthem.
The 39th
Army National Guard Band began in Manchester, NH in 1879. The 39th
Army Band, New Hampshire Army National Guard can trace its lineage
back 125 years to its inception in Manchester in 1879. The band is
comprised of musicians representing many communities throughout out
state. The members of the 39th Army Band are dedicated soldiers
whose high standard of performance is respected and anticipated
wherever they perform. Truly, the 39th Army Band is a shining
example of New Hampshire’s soldiers at their finest.
Jimmy Lehoux, along with his band. The Lehousiana Boys, has packed
his own beginning venues in his home state of New Hampshire and is
now taking Nashville by storm. His live shows are mixed with ballads
and narrative story songs and this did-it-his-own-way Cowboy is
destined to be heard across America. Jimmy Lehoux’s rapid rise to
the top of the country music scene in the Northeast has been as
natural and organic as the music he makes. He continues to push the
boundaries of country music forward.
Grab your blankets, lawn chairs, and dancing shoes and join us for a
fun, casual evening of live music at the Northwood Athletic Fields,
611 1st New Hampshire Turnpike. Food vendors will be on site as
well. The concerts are free for the public to enjoy. All concerts
are weather permitting. Cancellations will be posted on
http://recreation.northwoodnh.org. Concerts will not have rain
dates.
Contact the Recreation Department at 942-5586 x209 if you have
additional questions or check us out on Facebook.
