To The Editor
In this
neck of the woods - Northwood - a lot of people know we have climbed
out on limbs we ourselves, or others, have been sawing at... and the
recent town vote may suggest there is a growing idea to quit sawing.
Our first SB2 election had a pretty good turnout - over 800 voting
with 795 at the poll plus absentee ballots. And not posing as a mind
reader, I think it would be safe to say there is a majority of
people in this community who want to see the money already being
spent to be even more carefully spent. Some I have heard
repeat their concern that too much is already being spent as of many
yesterdays past.
With
home values often half of what they were at last assessment and many
day to day living costs up, (most notably gasoline and fuel oil
doubling over what it was only three and a half years ago, which
drives up the price of almost everything else) folks are not in the
mood of seeing the taxes they’ve paid not put to maximum best use. I
think people realize that certain government functions have to be
paid for, but not wasted on poor performance or wish lists.
Obviously our local votes can’t improve housing values or gas prices
but there is a great concern that what we are paying for in local
government be well spent.
At this point, it seems to me, all town departments and our
elementary school need to heed the concerns of the people paying the
bills and be willing to "tighten belts" and improve quality.
Some new approaches, some creative thinking is in order. Why not?
Sincerely,
Joseph
McCaffrey

A
commenter in our local paper recently said, regarding the attempt to
repeal the right to marry for our NH LGBT family members, friends
and neighbors:
"The
liberal legislature spent four years ramming through an extremist
agenda that is contrary to historical NH standards and now things
are being put back the way they belong and no amount of spin from
the liberal left will change that."
Not only did this current legislature agree with that "liberal
legislature," but two of our local representatives, Jim Sullivan and
Kyle Tasker, voted to keep the rights of our citizens intact. NH has
never taken away rights once granted, and did not do so on March 21,
2012.
Our
commenter has not been in NH long, and like so many of our current
legislators and their supporters, does not understand that their
dream of a "libertarian paradise" where it’s "every man for himself
and the devil take the hindmost" is not the NH way. He can’t grasp
that we care about our communities, and our neighbors, and always
have.
I can
dream that this is a turning point, that perhaps this strange and
alien legislature will suddenly decide to support our public
schools, our separation of powers into executive, judicial and
legislative branches, our pride in our environment and our
infrastructure, and our desire to build a state that we can point to
with pride. I’m tired of being made fun of in the national media.
I’m not
holding my breath, however.
