Concerned about what has been going on in Concord over the last
year? Thinking that it might be a good idea to elect a few more
Democrats to office in NH this year? Want to get involved at the
grassroots and meet some dedicated people who care about our
community? The Northwood Democrats will be holding their caucus to
elect officers for the town committee and delegates to the New
Hampshire Democratic Party Convention in June.
We will meet at the Community Center in Northwood Narrows on Monday,
February 27th, at 6:30 pm. All registered Democrats are eligible to
vote and to serve as officers. For more information please call Lucy
Edwards, current town chair, at 312-6049, or e-mail her at

Northwood Grade 3-4 Girls Basketball Push Record To 5-1-1
Northwood Bears Grade 3-4 Girls Basketball Team upped its record to
5-1-1 with three wins and a tie in its last four games. Northwood
traveled to Deerfield and defeated the host team 12- 4 behind
Makayla DeButts team-high six points. Teammates Paige Valli and Mary
Thoms added four and two points, respectively.
In a
non-league game, Northwood tied Epping of the Lamprey River
Basketball League, 9-9, at Epping Middle School. Leading 8-5 after
three periods, the visiting Bears squad was outscored 4-1 in the
final frame. No overtime period was played. Valli, from her center
position, led the Northwood attack with four points. DeButts and 3rd
grade guard Addison Cox each scored two points. Thoms added one free
throw to round out the scoring.
In
another non-conference match, Northwood was entertained by St.
George’s Greek Church of Manchester, a member of the Manchester CYO
Grade 3-4 League. Northwood stunned the co-ed St. George Team, 10-6
with 4th graders Valli and DeButts leading the way with four points
each. Forward Jennifer Bettencourt had 2 points.
Most
recently, the Northwood Girls made its four games in a row without a
loss after upending Strafford 14-8. Northwood raced to a 14-2 lead
after three periods before its defense gave up three hoops to
Strafford in the final frame. Thoms played brilliantly leading the
fast break and scoring 10 points to lead all scorers. 4th grader
Morgan Tatum tallied her first basket of the season in the win. 3rd
grader Bettencourt completed the scoring for the visitors adding two
points. Tatum’s twin sister, Madison Tatum, also turned in her best
performance of the season with three steals and two assists.
Northwood’s Alex Elliot turned in a solid two-way performance.
Northwood, now 4-1 in conference play, will complete its season with
a "Best Matchup" game versus Deerfield on Saturday, February 11. The
Bears narrowly defeated Deerfield, 16-14, on opening game day at
Northwood, and then 12-4 at Deerfield.

Northwood Recreation Update
On
Saturday, February 18th, the Northwood Recreation will begin holding
the 5th Annual Ice Fishing Derby. The Derby will be held on Harvey
Lake from 8:00 am to noon. Children do not need a fishing license.
Adults are welcome to fish, but must be licensed to fish in the
State of New Hampshire. Prizes will be given to children 16 and
under in a categories including first fish, shortest fish, and
longest fish. Please bring your ice fishing gear.
If you are not an avid ice fisherman, the Recreation Department will
be providing some tip-ups and bait for those who would like to try
something new. This is a free event.
The
Northwood Congregational Church has graciously offered to open their
doors to allow participants access to the bathrooms. They will also
be selling hot beverages and food. Proceeds will benefit the church.
Parking is also available at the Church. Registration in advance is
requested, but not required. The event will be held rain or shine,
safe ice permitting.
Contact the Northwood Recreation Department at 942-5586 x209 or by
e-mail at
[email protected] for additional information.
Spelling
Bee Held At Northwood School
The
Northwood School Spelling Bee was held on Friday, January 27th.
Students from Grades 4-8 participated in the Spelling Bee. The
competition lasted almost an hour before the champion was declared.
The competitors did a great job, and the audience members from
Grades 4-8 were very quiet and respectful to all the spellers. The
audience was also enthusiastic in their applause when one of the
competitors was eliminated from the Bee. The winner of the Northwood
School Spelling Bee was Billie Pingree, an 8th grader. The runner-up
was Ryu Kondrup who is also an 8th grader.
The
format of the state Spelling Bee has changed this year. Rather than
the regional bees, there will now be a day long celebration at the
Capitol Center for the Arts on Saturday March 3 from 10:00 am to 3
pm. All of the school-level winners will go directly to the New
Hampshire Spelling Bee. Family, friends, and the public are invited
to this free event.
The
first round will be from 10-11 for all school-wide winners. After
the first round all of the spellers are treated to lunch at the
Common Man restaurant. After lunch, the finalists are announced, and
from 1-3, the finalists compete to determine the champion.
We are
very proud of our contestant Billie Pingree, and we wish her the
best of luck in the New Hampshire Spelling Bee.
NALMC Is
Proud To Present Michael Caduto
Join us at the Northwood Community Center on Saturday, February 25,
2012 from 4-8 pm and learn about the importance of riparian buffers
and river stewardship. This program is packed with engaging
storytelling for kids, a potluck supper, and an entertaining look at
the science of stewardship for the whole family from the co-author
of Keepers of the Earth, Michael Caduto. It is Free and Open to
the public.
Michael
J. Caduto, who is well known as the co-author of the Keepers of the
Earth books and A Time Before New Hampshire, will share stories,
songs and indigenous stewardship traditions. Caduto is known
internationally for his entertaining, dynamic presentations of
science, storytelling, song and stewardship; the programs he
presents here have a special connection to rivers.
For his
children’s program Caduto uses storytelling, songs and chants to
immerse his audience in freshwater life and native stewardship
traditions.
His
exciting family program explores different paths toward
understanding the science and stewardship of riparian buffers— the
habitats along the edges of streams and rivers that serve as
guardians of aquatic ecosystems and the life therein. Michael will
also introduce Riparia’s River, his new children’s picture book (Tilbury
House Publishers).
Schedule
4 pm –

Northwood Advent Christian Church gets a lift with the help of
community and friends. Once again members, friends and community
have come together to meet the needs of the Northwood Advent
Christian Church.
Monetary
gifts of all sizes, along with shared talents and skills, combined
with many prayers resulted in our Church now having a chair lift.
Because of this combined effort, folks who have problems with the
stairs in the entrance of the church will be able to attend our
services and special events.
This was
a wonderful answer to prayer and another example of what a little
community with a big heart can do.
Thanks
to everyone who contributed. Every gift was important and helped
reach the goal. We also do not want to forget the dedicated work led
by Trustee Eric Rundgren in making the necessary modifications
needed to allow the installation. Eric, assisted by Randy DeTrude
worked many hours ensuring that the lift would be able to meet
specifications and blend well with the church building.
Thanks
to each and every one involved. A barrier has been removed and a new
blessing is in place.
Stay
tuned. We will keep everyone informed of the date for an open house
to celebrate the maiden voyage of the new lift.
Thank
you and God bless,

To The Editor
It’s
wonderful to see Northwood working under the SB2 rules and doing
just fine. The Town Deliberative Session went off without a hitch.
I’m, of course, biased and feel that the town is pretty much running
on all cylinders.
At the
School Deliberative Session last night things went well regarding
SB2 issues. There was a good crowd, mostly one sided, but that is
fine. Anyone can come, you don’t have to if you don’t want to.
What is
so very important is that a much larger slice of the voters in
Northwood will have their say now in the privacy of a booth in, at
most, a ten minute loss of time out of your day. I am so proud of
that.
It is,
however, disturbing that once again when we have a controversial
issue that our moderator shows such bias. There was a behind the
scenes intrigue that continued into last night that most all of you
know nothing about. But the Moderator is not running again and next
year we will have a new one. I hope that the new moderator realizes
the importance of not allowing a bias to be part of the job.
After
last night, so many feel there is really no reason to come to
meetings if they are cut off. This is one of the reasons that our
meetings get fewer and fewer participants. I respect your views and,
in fact, I want to hear them.
