To The Editor
Mistakes, most learn from them. If you try something and it does not
work then you try something else before it is too late. Yet the
graveyard is littered with ideas that didn’t work and a stubbornness
that wouldn’t allow change. Go figure. After many years of watching
our education "industry" ( I use this word purposely ) and a year
right in the middle of it I have come to the conclusion that this is
a perfect example of this malady.
The
Department of Education began as a cabinet level monstrosity in
1980. We now spend more per child than any other country except
Luxemburg yet are the laughing stock of the world educationally.
Why? It is just like the charities where 90% goes to the
administrators and 10% goes to the needy. The administration from
right here in Northwood to the top of the money chain in D.C. are
sucking it up for themselves. Yet…yet, the kids go without basic
needs. Why do we allow this to happen?
We the
people have not learned from this mistake. The mistake is that more
and more money will not educate our children. Money, the vast
amounts of it, is hurting our children. It masks the real problem.
It gives us a feel good feeling that at least we are trying to do
something. A nun or a Chinese teacher could take 30 kids in a class
at 1/10 what we spend and give those students a great education. If
we were anything but a taxpayer funded industry, we also would be in
that graveyard, deservedly so. We need to rethink, yes, change.

I am
getting annoyed at being puzzled by my congressman, Frank Guinta. I
got a video from a friend showing that Mr. Guinta didn’t know when
he voted for HR3630, the payroll tax cut extension, he also voted to
increase the amount of Medicare premiums paid by high-income
beneficiaries and the number of beneficiaries required to pay these
higher premiums, and to cut the Medicare provider rates for
physicians and hospitals. Cutting that rate would mean fewer doctors
would take on new Medicare patients.
That
bill would also raise Medicare premiums on seniors by 15 percent
starting in 2017 and slash the healthcare reform law’s Prevention
and Public Health Fund by $8 billion. The public health system and
preventative health initiatives not only safeguard our health, they
save us all money.
I guess
Frank didn’t read the bill. He really doesn’t have to, because he
has corporate masters who tell him how to vote on things. Carol
Shea-Porter read the bills she voted on. How do I know? I looked at
her legislative record, and saw that she added amendments to a
number of bills that improved them substantially.
One of
those bills was the Affordable Care Act. She read the bill and found
nothing in there about closing the Medicare D prescription donut
hole. She worked hard to get an amendment added. She knew how to
persuade her colleagues to do the right thing. She cared about us,
and we need her back in Congress!
