School Starts Soon!

Now is the time to think about enrolling your child in preschool!  The Center School is accepting registrations for the 2011-2012 school year.  The Center School, a parent cooperative preschool located next to the town hall in Northwood, provides a developmental program for three, four, and five year olds.  We have only a few openings left in our two-day (T/Th) program and three-day (M/W/F) morning programs.  Act now before they are filled!  To get information please call the school at 942-7686.

The American Red Cross is holding a Blood Drive on Tuesday, September 6th from 3:30 to 8:00 pm at the Pittsfield Elementary School, 34 Bow Street.

Appointments are encouraged, please call 1-800-Red-Cross to schedule. However, walk-ins are welcome.  Donors this drive will receive an American Red Cross/Red Sox T-Shirt; a coupon for a free round of golf in October at participating golf clubs and a coupon from Monro Muffler/Brake or Tire Warehouse.

How good you will feel if you take a little time out that day to donate.  Remember, the life you save could be your own or that of a family member.

Letter To The Editor

My puzzling congressman, Frank Guinta, sent me another campaign e-mail from his US House office recently.  How can I tell it’s a campaign e-mail instead of an update on the reality of his work for us?  Well, for one thing, he tells me how accessible he is while he is here in the district, but the only events listed are for his staff!

But another thing that is a clue to the true purpose of these communications is his constant harping on “balanced budget amendments.”  I did some research on these.  First of all, they are amendments to our Constitution, and require the votes of 2/3 of both houses of Congress and 3/4 of the states’ legislatures to pass the proposed amendment within a time limit.  That’s a pretty high hurdle.

Out of all the other reasons why this is a terrible idea, many of which I found in the writings of very conservative thinkers who have worked for previous Republican presidents, the one that struck me the most was that this is simply a way for Congress to get out of doing their job!  If they want to balance the budget, they should work to present a balanced budget.  And no, Paul Ryan’s famed budget does not balance the budget even by 2080.  Congressman Guinta voted for that budget, the one that abolishes Medicare!

So tell us what you are doing in Congress that isn’t just posturing, Mr. Guinta, instead of your fancy campaign literature.

Saddleback Mountain Lions Club New Lions Club Officers Installed

An installation ceremony was held on July 12th for incoming officers of the Saddleback Mountain Lions Club. Frank Markiewicz was elected as the club President for 2011-2012. Markiewicz has been a member of various lions clubs since 1984.

Christine Burke was elected to serve as the new club Secretary and Bob Chadbourn continues to serve as the club Treasurer.

According to Markiewicz, club President, “I am looking forward to leading various projects and continuing the Saddleback Mountain Lions Club Lion Club’s long tradition of commitment to serving our communities that include Northwood, Strafford, Nottingham, Deerfield, and Barrington.”

Since the club’s chartering in 1973, its members have worked on a variety of projects in the local community with proceeds from past fund raising events benefiting local community residents and charities. The club is currently working on an Outing for the Blind, NHMS Fund raising events, Northwood Lake Ice Racing, Antique Show and Appraisal, Peace Poster Project, High School Scholarships, Kids Sight Screening, and a Golf Tournament.

The Saddleback Mountain Lions Club meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 pm. Lions clubs are a group of men and women who identify needs within the community and work together to fulfill those needs.

Saddleback Mountain Lions Club will host a “Reunion of Past, Present, and Potential Members” on Tuesday, September 13, 2011 beginning at 6 pm with a social hour and 7 pm dinner, at the Northwood Masonic Hall, corner of Route 4 and 202.  If you would like to attend this event as our guest or for more information, about becoming a member, please contact Membership Chair Sally Knowlton at [email protected]  or call  Sally at 664-5863.

Girl Scouts

Soon the school buses will be driving down Route 4, apples will begin to ripen, and mums will decorate the doorsteps of Northwood. Most importantly Northwood Girl Scout troop meetings will start up once again. All troop meetings will resume on Wednesday, September 7th at 6:00 pm.

The leaders have been very busy this summer taking various workshops to make this scouting year even more exciting than ever before. We are eager to share with our troops all that we have learned and gear up to celebrate Girl Scouts 100th Birthday!

Some changes have taken place; Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains have realigned all of the towns into clusters. Northwood will be joining Raymond, Candia, Deerfield and Epsom. Assuredly all regular troop meetings will remain the same.

What does this mean to Northwood? We will have more opportunities, and events to host, as well as be invited to. Girls will be able to interact with other girls at their scouting age level all while on their scouting journey! Making “Be a sister to every Girl Scout” better than ever. So, dig through your closet, grab your uniform and get ready for an exciting year ahead!
