Letter
To
all Northwood Residents: As most of you know, the Northwood
School is currently part of SAU 44, a three-district SAU that also
includes the towns of Strafford and Nottingham. After careful
consideration, the Northwood School Board feels that we should look
at the feasibility of becoming a single district SAU.
Since Northwood is now an SB2 town, the first step of this process
was to hold a Special School District Meeting which took place on
Monday, May 9th at 7:00 pm in the school gym. The purpose of
this special meeting/deliberative session was for the School Board
to present its financial, educational and administrative reasons for
recommending the formation of an SAU withdrawal committee.
Community members had the opportunity to speak and ask questions.
The
next step of the process is to hold a ballot vote on the question of
whether or not the Northwood School District should establish a
planning committee to study the pros and cons of becoming a single
district SAU. This ballot vote will be held on Tuesday, June
7th, at the Parish Center at St. Joseph’s Church. The polls
will be open from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm.
If
the town votes to form a withdrawal committee, this committee shall
consist of 2 School Board members, 1 Budget Committee member and 4
members of the community at large. The committee will research
all aspects of withdrawal and will make a final recommendation to
the town. If the committee recommends withdrawal, the
committee will then create a withdrawal plan that will be presented
to the town and to the state for approval.
We
strongly encourage residents to come out and vote on June 7.
Should you have any questions regarding this process or if you would
like more information, please contact any School Board member.
Thank
you. Helen Ash Vice Chair, Northwood School Board
Lucy Edwards, Northwood Farmers Market. Would you
like a chance to talk with a trained volunteer who loves to garden
and to share her knowledge with her community?
Come to the
Northwood Farmers Market at the corner of Rts. 4 and 202/9 on
Thursday, May 26th, from 3-6:30 pm, and Linda Smith, NH Master
Gardener, will be available to answer questions and point us in the
right direction as we get our gardens geared up for the summer
season. Fruit, flowers or vegetables, she knows where to find
the best information.

New Art Classes At Northwood Recreation Hall
Submitted By: David Burton
After 10 wonderful years of teaching free art classes at the Chesley
Memorial Library, artist David Burton has moved his art classes to
the Northwood Recreation Hall, due to the Library’s new shorter
hours. Mr. Burton has over twenty years experience in art,
doing everything from portraits to books covers.
The
class is an ongoing course in art, teaching students everything from
the basics of drawing to figure art and painting. With the new
location, Mr. Burton is looking for new students.
His
class is currently starting to learn the basics of painting and
anyone who would like to join can contact David at:
[email protected].
For this part of the class, a basic knowledge of drawing is
required.
Students bring their own supplies. For a list of what to bring and
if you have any questions, please feel free to contact David the
above mentioned e-mail address.
Letter To The Editor
Productive. What is and what isn’t productive can be measured
in many ways. So for instance, when School Board member Overmyer
complained Monday that a public comment period at the end of
meetings was not very productive I wonder in what context he is
measuring. The Northwood School Board is elected to manage
taxpayer’s money in the endeavor to educate our children to the best
of their ability. They haven’t been too productive in money
management. They overspent their budget last year; they are
somewhere over budget this year but frankly no one knows by how
much. So, yes, Mr. Overmyer and crew are productive at spending
money that isn’t theirs.
Our children are not getting an adequate
education. Test scores show a school that is well below the State
average and going downhill at a very fast rate. Very productive at
wasting our hard earned dollars and setting up our kids for failure.
That is my perspective. We need a lot more public comment.
I asked Chairman Ruth, “what is the game plan Dave? The School Board
is openly hostile to the Budget Committee, is openly disrespectful
to the Selectmen, is rude and disdainful of the public at large, and
wants to withdraw from the SAU. Do you have a end game?” His answer
was that we had a different perspective. And in that he is
right on the money. Productivity at the School Board stinks, that is
my perspective.
