Northwood School District Meeting
The Annual Northwood School
District Meeting will be held on Saturday, March 5th at 9:00 am in
the school gym.
At its public hearing on Saturday, January 15th
and at a subsequent work session on Thursday, January 20th, the
Northwood Budget Committee voted to cut the 2011-2012 School Board’s
Proposed Operating Budget from $12,749,661 to $12,172,076, a
reduction of $577,585.
If the town votes in favor of the Budget
Committee’s Proposed Budget at the Annual School District Meeting on
March 5th, dramatic cuts will have to be made in advance of the next
school year. On January 25th, the School Board began discussion of
the areas where cuts will be made if the Budget Committee’s budget
passes. The School Board will continue this discussion at its
February meetings.
In 2008, Northwood voted to cut the School
Board’s Proposed Budget by $250,000. To read about the impact
of a cut that was less than half of what the Budget Committee is
proposing for the upcoming year, please visit the School Board
section of the Northwood School website. Other information,
including the School Board’s Proposed Operating Budget as well as
information about the School District Meeting and the budget
process, is also posted on the School Board’s section of the
website.
Whether you support the Budget Committee’s proposed
budget or the School Board’s proposed budget, it is the voters who
attend the Annual School District Meeting on March 5th who will
determine the school’s operating budget for the upcoming year.
Please plan to attend. If you have any questions, contact School
Board Chair Colleen Pingree at 942-5249 or
[email protected].
Coe-
Brown Announces Poetry Out Loud School Wide Finalist
At
Coe-Brown’s second annual Poetry Out Loud finals, senior Moira Geary
became school champion, and sophomore Kylie Gagnon, runner-up.
Finalists also competing included senior Heather Ward, junior
Kendall McGowan, sophomore Marianna Barnhart and freshman Gwyneth
Horne. The school-wide finals were held on January 20, 2011, in an
evening that also included three student-directed one act plays and
a dance showcase. The competition, presented in partnership
with the N.H. State Council for the Arts, the National Endowment for
the Arts, and the Poetry Foundation, is part of a national program
that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry
through memorization, performance, and competition. These finalists
in the school competition were chosen from among classroom champions
during late December and early January in participating English
classes and in an after school competition open to students from
other English classes. Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education
program that encourages the study of great poetry by offering
educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition to high
schools across the country. The larger contest uses a pyramid
structure. Beginning at the classroom level, winners advance to a
school-wide competition, then to regional and state competition, and
ultimately to the National Finals in Washington, DC. At
Coe-Brown, students recited works they selected from an anthology of
more than 600 classic and contemporary poems. Judges evaluated
student performances on criteria including articulation, evidence of
understanding, level of difficulty, and accuracy. Teachers
introduced poetry recitation in the classroom using materials
created by the NEA and the Poetry Foundation, including a
standards-based teacher’s guide, a website, a ‘best performances’
DVD, and a CD featuring poetry recitations by well-known actors and
writers such as Anthony Hopkins and Rita Dove. Moira Geary will
advance to one of four N.H. regional contests on March 11, 2011, at
New England College, Great Room, Simon Center, at 7 p.m. The top
scoring students at the regional finals advance to the state final
at the State House in Concord on Thursday, March 17, 2011 at 7:00
p.m. Each champion at the state level will receive $200 and an
all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC, to compete for the
national championship on April 25-27, 2011. The school of the state
champion will receive $500 for the purchase of poetry books. To

Coe-Brown Host Of Recent Special Olympics Seacoast Winter Games
Athletes and spectators gather before an event at the recent CBNA
hosted Special Olympics Seacoast Winter Games, January 29, 2011.
On
Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011, Coe-Brown Northwood Academy hosted
the Special Olympics Seacoast Winter Games. After canceling the
games last year due to rain and loss of snow, this winter’s abundant
snowfall ensured excellent conditions for this event. Over 200
athletes, excited and ready for a great day, competed in sprint and
distance snow shoe and cross country ski events. For his senior
project, Patrick Graham coordinated the games with CBNA faculty
member Shawn White in cooperation with Special Olympics of New
Hampshire staff member Katie Diggins. Patrick’s efforts were key to
the games’ success. Started by faculty member Brent Tkaczyk and SONH
ten years ago, these games provide Special Olympics athletes from
around the state an opportunity to compete in preparation for state,
national, and sometimes international events. The key to these
games’ success is immense volunteer effort. Patrick Graham and Mr.
White would like to express sincere gratitude to the more than 30
student volunteers, in large part representing Coe-Brown’s track and
field team, whose effort is the core of that support. Special thanks
also go out to Devin Jeanotte of the Northwood Crank Pullers
Snowmobile Club for grooming the tracks, Tim Chadbourn of
Chadbourn’s Restaurant for coordinating food service, the Northwood
Police Department for emergency services, Mal Estell for
photography, the CBNA janitorial staff, and CBNA faculty and staff
members Brent Tkaczyk, David Zink-Mailloux, Ryan Smith, and Karen
Carey.
