Letter
To “abdicate” is to give away, to waive. As the
Department of Education and the incredible power of teacher
unions has grown, our children have fallen in the world
standings, especially math and science. Fact! Yet, we spend more
on education than any other country except Luxemburg. Why?
We have abdicated our parental responsibility of making sure
that our children are educated. We trusted someone else to
do it. It is not working.
Northwood. Out of 108 schools our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade
students rank 73rd on the statewide NECAP scoring. Strafford is
6th. We spend $2,400.00 more per student than Strafford.
Frankly, Nottingham spends even less and still beats us. Why?
Look in the mirror. We abdicated our responsibility. Oh,
we spent, we elected people, but the facts show that we dropped
the ball; nationally and here in beautiful Northwood. Tough love
is what is needed. March 5th, 2011 at the Northwood School at 9
am.
I don’t blame teachers alone for this dismal showing.
Nor will I reward them. We all share responsibility. But, our
teachers again are demanding more money, less work and greater
benefits. Tell them NO! Remember that the worst teacher at our
school will get the same raise as our best. So tell them that we
will give them a raise when they deserve it. Furthermore, if the
best want what they deserve then help us to change the system
and agree to a merit based system. Quit allowing the worst and
the noisiest to speak for all of you. Students first.
Parents, it is not the money, it is the system, how we
are teaching and our lack of getting involved. Really, are we
giving our kids everything they need to compete at Coe-Brown and
in our ever smaller world economy? Get involved March 5th.
Ignore the hyperbole, think tough love. Let’s turn this around
and stop abdicating our responsibility.
