Pastor’s Corner: Your Belief System
By Pastor Ted
White Who or what do you
believe? Everybody believes in someone or something. It may just be
a belief in the goodness of man or the goodness of themselves. It
may be some world religious system or some not so well known
religious system. But, everyone serves something or someone.
The key is do we believe in the truth? Pilate,
the Roman governor who gave Jesus
over to be executed, asked the question, “What is truth?” There is
so much knowledge and so many ideas and each of us, even the most
intelligent, knows so little when it comes to the vast sea of
knowledge. And yet, the truth has been revealed to anyone who wants
it. First, we can see truth in the “natural” world. In Psalm
19:1-4 we read, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies
proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth
speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech
or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out
into all the earth, their works to the ends of the world.” The truth
that God is the Designer/Creator is easy to see for those who
believe. Of course, there will be others who seek to explain the
Creation by some other means and that is their choice.
Next, we have a conscience. In Romans 1:18 and following we read
that “For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God
nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their
foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise they
became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images
made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.” It
is also mentioned that they suppress the truth by wickedness because
even though God has made plain that He indeed exists, they willingly
deny the fact. Their conscience has said one thing, but they willing
make the choice to believe otherwise.
Then we have the Word of God, the Bible. In Matthew 7:13-29
there are two gates - wide and narrow, two types of fruit - good and
bad, and two types of people - wise and foolish. It is belief or
unbelief that determines which a person is. But, Matthew 7:24-27
makes it clear that the wise person is the one who hears the Word of
God and applies it. The fool hears the Word of God and does not
apply it.
Finally, there is Jesus,
the Son of God. What will you do with Him? You can either trust Him
or reject Him. Those are the only two options. Whether you believe
it or not, doesn’t change the fact that you will appear before Him
one day. Just like you can deny that you are going to die one day,
but the fact is you will. May you be ready to meet the One who will
“judge the living and the dead” (Acts 10:42).
Won’t you trust Jesus?
