Letter to the Editor

Hello Northwood residents. My name is Bob Holden and I am pleased to announce my candidacy for Selectman. My wife, Susan, and I reside at 15 North Lane. We have 2 children, Christopher and his significant other, Tobi.

I also currently have the privilege of serving on your Budget Committee, as Vice-Chair. I enjoy working for the residents of Northwood and have made some terrific friends during the process. I must admit however, I may be known by my Budget Committee peers, as the Budget Committee skinflint. I am very concerned about the economy this year and the impact it will have on the taxpayers of Northwood. I believe a “business as usual budget.” this year is going to make it more difficult for taxpayers, when the tax bills are printed in November.

I am currently employed as the Chief Financial Officer of Hampshire Fire Protection in Londonderry. Daily I work with budgets the size of the current Town or School budgets and I believe my experience would be an asset to the Town I love. The current economic conditions require everyone involved in managing money, personal or public, to change the way they decide to spend the funds. I have the ability and commitment, to think outside the box, to accomplish these goals.

I will be discussing my ideas more specifically as the budget process nears the March meetings, however I would be very interested in hearing your thoughts and concerns. My email address is [email protected] or I can be reached on my cell phone at 603-714-8432. Thank-you.

Robert Holden

Graveyard Pancakes
Tuesday, February 24, 10:00 a.m.
Ages 9 And Up

Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a normal boy.

He would be completely normal if he didn’t live in a sprawling graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor of the dead.

There are dangers and adventures in the graveyard for a boy - an ancient Indigo Man beneath the hill, a gateway to a desert leading to an abandoned city of ghouls, the strange and terrible menace of the Sleer.

But if Bod leaves the graveyard, then he will come under attack from the man Jack - who has already killed Bod’s family. . . .

Join us at the Chesley Memorial Library, on Tuesday, February 24 (National Pancake Day), as we discuss the 2009 Newbury Award Winner The Graveyard Book by Neil Gamain over pancakes and juice. News from the Northwood School Board
4 Feb 2009

At the Northwood School Board on February 2, entertainment was provided by Music Teacher Susan Gokey and student musicians, Ashley Calef, Lexie Buiel, Austin Leith, and Nicole Beaupre. After a delightful musical presentation, the board discussed a variety of issues including ball field repair, the Student Activity Fund, and Finance Administrator & School District Treasurer job descriptions.

Mr. Demko reviewed this year’s warrant articles and the Budget Committee’s votes with respect to each article. Board Chair Colleen Pingree explained that once the Budget Committee has voted on the proposed teacher contract, the warrant and the proposed budget will be made available for download on the School Board Page of the school web site.

The Board discussed plans for the School Disctrict Meeting on March 7 and agreed to set up a special work session to coordinate the details. Ms. Pingree explained that she has already confirmed that the 8th grade will be helping with this year’s meeting. 8th grade students and parents will be providing baby-sitting services; there will be no charge, but donations for the 8th grade class trip will be gratefully accepted. The board agreed that food and drinks will be permitted in the gym for this year’s meeting; the 8th grade will sell coffee, breakfast foods, and snacks at the back of the room.

The Board also discussed attendance. Ms. Pingree reminded the Board that last year’s $256,000 budget cut was made by approximately 68 people with a total voter attendance of approximately 120. The Board agreed that attendance will be critical to passing this year’s budget. Ms. Pingree explained that the Communications Committee will be helping to distribute information to town residents thru the web site, email, and news articles.

For more information, please visit the School Board page of the web site (www.northwood.k12.nh.us) or contact Colleen Pingree (942-5249; [email protected]).
