Letter
I
commend the majority of the Democratic members of the House, and the
one brave Republican from Louisiana who passed the health care bill
Saturday night. It is far from a perfect bill, and the anti-choice
amendment stinks, but it is an enormous step. How enormous was made
very clear by the person chosen to preside during the debate, Rep.
Dingell from Michigan, an aged gentleman whose father proposed the
first healthcare bill to come before Congress in the 1930s. That’s
how long it has taken us to get just this far.
But
I will carry with me forever the scene of white, male Republican
“representatives” shouting down the Democratic women who tried to
speak during the debate. I am left with the conviction that there
are just too many Republicans who don’t like or respect women.
Senator Sessions thinks it is fine to charge women more for health
insurance because it’s like charging smokers more. (Being a woman is
doing something unhealthy, I guess.) Senator Kyl doesn’t think we
need maternity care as a standard part of health insurance because
HE doesn’t need it.
As
a woman, this is one of the many reasons that I am a Democrat. When
asked why, I simply say, “What have the Republicans done for me
recently?” I suppose I could even say “ever.” Watching the
dismantling of my country’s economy, environment and reputation over
the past decade under Bush left me with a very nasty taste in my
mouth. The Republican Party hasn’t done anything since the 2008
election that tastes any better.

Coe-Brown Receives A Fourth Sportsmanship Award
From left:
Mr. Patrick Corbin, Executive Director of NHIA, Athletic Director
Matt Skidds and Headmaster David Smith, and unveil Coe-Brown’s
latest award banner.
Coe-Brown Northwood Academy unveiled its newest award to the entire
student body at a recent school assembly. Athletic Director Matt
Skidds announced that Coe-Brown has received the New Hampshire
Interscholastic Athletic Association’s Class I Sportsmanship Award
for the 2008-2009 school year. The award was presented to the school
by Mr. Patrick Corbin, Executive Director of NHIAA.
The
most prestigious honor awarded by the NHIAA, the Sportsmanship Award
is voted on by all schools who participate in Class I athletics.
It honors Coe-Brown’s athletes, coaches, and spectators for their
conduct and sportsmanship during the past year’s athletic season.
This is the fourth consecutive year that Coe-Brown has been the
Class I honoree, and Skidds emphasized the role the entire school
played in earning this award. It is a great honor for CBNA to
win this award, since there are only four schools throughout the
state, one for each size classification, chosen each year to be
honored for outstanding sportsmanship.
The
NHIAA promotes a culture of sportsmanship amongst its member schools
and the 44,000 student athletes involved in its programs.
Northwood Recreation Thank You
The
4th Annual Haunted Hayride was held on October 30th and October 31st
and was a ghouling success enjoyed by children of all ages as well
as adults. The night was chilling with thrills of scary sights
and freaky noises. This year’s event would not have been
possible without the help of our volunteers and the generous
donations from local businesses; Lee Dunkin Donuts, Northwood Dunkin
Donuts, Northwood Hannaford, Shaw’s in Dover, Duane Family Farm, and
Johnson Spray Foam of Northwood.
The
success of the Haunted Hayride is a result of participation from the
Recreation Commission Members, Girl Scouts, and all the scary faces
who were hiding in the woods and those behind the scenes. I would
like to thank you for your dedication. Most of all, thank you to
Camp Yavneh for allowing us to utilize the facility. We are already
planning for next year’s event; guaranteed to be a TREAT!

Harvey Lake Woman’s Club (affiliated with General Federation of
Women’s Clubs) recently recognized three members for their many
years of service. Audrey Huckins, 35 years; Pat Jacobsmeyer, 27
years; Joann Bailey, 33 years. The Club held its first meeting
January 4, 1913. It was decided by the women present that the object
of this club would be “to promote sociability and culture, and to
make itself a power for the good in the community,” a heritage still
honored today. They currently, make Comfort Pillows for breast
cancer patients and hold a newborn baby shower each year for Concord
Hospital; sponsor a Mitten Tree for St. Charles Children’s Home in
Rochester to name a few of their activities. They meet each month at
the Northwood Congregational Church.
