News from the Northwood School Board

The Northwood School Board would like to welcome everyone back to school! As we begin the new school year, there are lots of interesting developments to report.

Teachers came back to school on August 26th to ready their classrooms and to participate in a special 2-day workshop called The Skillful Teacher. Participants in the teacher mentor program attended a special workshop on August 25th where they were treated to the culinary delights of Ms. Asbell and Mr. Darsney (in addition to grilling, our hardworking administrators were also found scrubbing pots & pans in the kitchen.

The Communications Committee met on August 25th. At this meeting, the committee reviewed the communication changes in place for the new school year. These include: regular news articles from the School Board and the School, mission statement banners (now hanging in each lobby), School Board bulletin boards (these boards will be located in  each lobby and will include meeting minutes, agendas, newly revised policies, and other important information), and the Alert Now Notification Service (this service will allow us to send parents phone and email messages in the event of an emergency, delay, or cancellation). The committee is still working on the school’s new web site and hopes to have the site on-line this fall.

Though the School Board did discuss raising the price of school lunches this year, it was decided that we will NOT increase the price at this time. With regard to food service, students and staff will notice many changes in the cafeteria this year, including a new refrigerated salad cart and the Lunch Time software program.

For more information, including the school calendar, September lunch menu, and 2008-09 bus routes, visit the school web site at www.northwood.k12.nh.us.

The School Board and the Board of Selectmen will hold their quarterly meeting on September 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the Town Hall. Agenda items will include the town’s bulk energy purchase for the upcoming year, as well as updates on the communication committee and the school/town emergency plan.

The School Board’s next meeting will be on September 15 in the school library (the public is welcome). For more information, please visit the School Board page of the school web site. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Colleen Pingree, Northwood School Board Chair at [email protected] or 942-5249.

Police Chief D’Alessandro To Retire In October

Northwood Police Chief Michael D’Alessandro is retiring after 22 years with the Northwood Police Department. Chief D’Alessandro started with the department in September of 1986 as a part time officer. He attended New Hampshire Police Standards & Training in the fall of 1986 to become a certified part time officer. One year later he attended the police academy to earn his full time officer certification. He was promoted to the position of Sergeant in 1989, and was appointed Acting Chief of Police in 1990. He was selected for the position of Chief of Police in 1991 and has served in that capacity for the Town of Northwood since that time. His retirement will begin on November 1, 2008, at which time he plans to pursue other interests.

During Chief D’Alessandro’s tenure, the department has seen many positive changes, activities and instituting of new programs. The department has gone from 2 full time officers to  6. The DARE program was enacted to reach several age groups at Northwood Elementary School and many of the DARE graduates are now young adults. A school resource officer has been added as a permanent staff member at Coe-Brown Academy. The police department was computerized in 1993 and there has been continual upgrading of equipment and the cruiser fleet during Chief D’Alessandro’s leadership. A major change occurred in recent years with the move of the department from its location at the town hall to a new home on Rt. 4 when the former Post Office building became available. The police department, along with help from the community, contributed many volunteer hours to assist in the renovation of the new police station.  A three bay garage was later added to protect the cruisers from the elements and keep them ready for service during the winter months.

The Northwood Police Commission, on behalf of the citizens of Northwood, accepted the resignation of Chief D’Alessandro with regret, noting his many years of dedicated and professional service to the town of Northwood and wishes him continued success in his future endeavors.

Lt. Glen Drolet has been promoted to the position of Northwood Police Chief to begin Nov. 1. He has been with the department and worked under Chief D’Alessandro for the past seven years.
