Big Trees
Of New Hampshire
The Northwood Conservation Commission
invites the public to a presentation by Kevin Martin on
Wednesday, March 23, 7 pm at the Northwood Town Hall. The New
Hampshire Register of Big Trees confirmed in 2015 that Northwood
is the steward of a Rockingham County Champion Big Tree, a 93
foot Hemlock (Tsuga Canadensis). Please join us for a
presentation by Kevin Martin, Rockingham County coordinator for
the NH Big Tree Program for an informative evening to learn
about our Big Tree and others throughout the state.
Kevin Martin brings you through the
woods and into some cities all over New Hampshire to find these
impressive living parts of our landscape including the state’s
largest northern white cedars in Clarksville that have been
marked by bears for generations, and the horse chestnut in
Portsmouth that was planted by a signer of the Declaration of
Independence in 1776. New Hampshire has 7 national champion Big
Trees which will be highlighted during the presentation.
Kevin Martin, a 4th generation NH native and outdoorsman, shares
stories of big trees around the state, along with information
about their history, management, and caretaking. Mr.
Martin’s book Big Trees of New Hampshire directs you on 28 hikes
to find 85 of the largest trees that are on public land or in
the cities where the public can see them up close.
