George E. Freese, Jr To Be Inducted Into Pittsfield’s Hall
Of Fame
On
Thursday evening September 13 at 7:00 pm, the Pittsfield Historical
Society will induct George E. Freese, Jr. into Pittsfield’s Hall of
Fame. The event will take place at its headquarters on Elm Street.
Mr.
Freese was born in 1920 and graduated from Pittsfield High School
and the University of New Hampshire. He served in England during
World War II and returned to enter the world of business and
politics. He became president of Globe Manufacturing Co. in 1953 and
was honored as the N. H. Small Business Association’s Businessperson
of the year in 1980. In 1993 he was awarded the N. H. Business and
Industry Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
Immediately after the War Mr. Freese began a lifetime of community
service. In 1946 he was elected to Pittsfield’s School Board and
subsequently served on numerous town committees. He was first
elected to the House of Representatives in 1947 and then to the
Senate in 1980, serving as its vice president 1983-86. In 1994
Governor Merrill appointed him to serve on the University of N.H.
Board of Trustees, a position he held until 1997.
Mr.
Freese married Florence Green in 1948 and had five children. He was
active in Republican circles, a member of the Congregational Church,
the American Legion, Rotary, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Masons,
Shriners, and Chamber of Commerce.
The
