The Barnstead Historical Society Celebrates Its 40th
Anniversary
The June Meeting of the Barnstead Historical Society will be on June
28th, tomorrow night.
There will be our traditional ‘Pot Luck’ Supper at 6:00 pm. The
meeting and program will follow at 7:00 pm. We will be looking back
over the last 40 years. Photographs of Barnstead will be on display
as well as other Historical Society memorabilia.
The first meeting of the Barnstead Historical Society was on June
29, 1972. Richard Golden was the first President and George
Hartshorn, the Vice President. Helen Merrill was the Secretary and
publicity agent and Dot Mulcahy was the Treasurer. Directors were
John Locke, Herbert Holmes and Stuart Merrill. Other founding
members were Eda St. John, Hazel Clark, Helen Gove, Ellen Grau, Carl
Knirsch and Carolyn Johnson. Stuart Merrill is still an active
member.
The Society’s past projects include: Restoration of the Jail or Lock
up in the Center in 1989, co-sponsoring the repainting of the Town
Hall curtain in 1982 and the wrought iron railing to protect it
(shown in photograph above), contribution to the Harrison Thyng
Memorial in Pittsfield in 2004 and restoration work on the Bandstand
in the Center, including the plaque to honor John Jenkins.
The Barnstead Historical Society has two display places in the Oscar
Foss Memorial Library in Center Barnstead. There is a glass case for
small displays and there is a large, standing display with many
pages of historical information about Barnstead’s past. We hope that
you will take a look at both. The Society is planning for the future
and looking forward to a time when we will have a meeting space and
a museum/display space where the public may enjoy discovering
Barnstead’s History through exhibits of historic items and other
programs.
