Covered Bridges in New Hampshire is the topic of Glenn Knoblock’s

28, 7:30 pm at the Academy (Town Offices) in Gilmanton Corner.
The Gilmanton Historical Society hosts Glenn Knoblock with an
illustrated presentation on Covered Bridges of New Hampshire on
Tuesday, June 28, 7:30 pm at the Academy (Town Office) in Gilmanton
Corner. The public is welcome and there is no charge.
Social time and refreshments start at 7 and the program begins
promptly at 7:30.
Covered wood bridges have been a vital part of the New Hampshire
transportation network, dating back to the early 1800s. Often
viewed as quaint relics of a simpler past, they were technological
marvels of the day. The program will discuss covered
bridge design and technology, their designers and builders, and
associated folklore. Images of NH bridges, past and present,
illustrates their transition from commonly used structures to
historic icons.
The next program in the 2011 summer series, July 26, features
Pat Clarke with a presentation on Gilmanton One Room Schools.
Former Agriculture Commissioner Steve Taylor returns on August 23rd
to tell us about Cows and Communities. The Society takes a
field trip to the Wright Museum in Wolfeboro on Saturday, August
27th. The final program, September 27th brings back Your Hit
Parade.
The Gilmanton Historical Society offers a number of publications
on the history of the Town. They are available at all Society
programs, at the Town Clerk’s Office, and at the Brick House in
Gilmanton Corners. The Society’s Museum, in the Academy
Building, is open by appointment. Call curators Jeanine
Moorhead 267-8870 or George Carpenter 267-8907.
