Defying The Nazis: Film At UUSL January 29

The Social Justice Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Laconia presents a Sunday afternoon film presentation of Ken Burns and Aretemis Joukowsky’s “Defying the Nazis: The Sharps’ War” on Sunday, January 29, at 2 pm.

This film tells the never-before-told story of Waitstill and Martha Sharp, a Unitarian minister and his wife, from Wellesley, Massachusetts, who left their children behind in the care of their parish, and boldly committed to a life-threatening mission in Europe. Over two dangerous years they helped save scores of imperiled dissidents and refugees fleeing the Nazi occupation of Europe.

During this time the Sharps would face harrowing encounters with Nazi police, narrowly escape arrest and watch as the Third Reich invaded Eastern Europe. Their marriage would be tested severely, and the two children they left behind would grow saddened by their parents’ absence. But dozens of scientists, journalists, doctors, powerful anti-Nazi activists and children would find a way to freedom and start new lives in America because of their efforts and sacrifice.

The film will be shown Sunday afternoon January 29  beginning at 2 pm at the Church, 172 Pleasant Street in Laconia, followed by refreshments and a discussion.  The public is welcome; there is no charge. Snow date: February 12th from 2 to 4 PM.

Gilmanton Year-Round Library Promoting 1000 Books Before Kindergarten

The Gilmanton Year-Round Library in conjunction with a state-wide and larger nation-wide library initiative, is actively engaged in encouraging and fostering early literacy skills.

One book a day for three years.  Three books a day for one year. Ten books per week for two years … these are all ways you can read 1000 books to your child before they reach kindergarten.

This is a challenge being offered to parents and children at the Gilmanton Year-Round Library.  The American Academy of Pediatrics encourages parents to read to their children daily beginning at infancy.  This promotes early brain development, literacy, social skills and prepares children with the skills they need to read independently when they reach school.

Parents can register their children for the program at the Gilmanton Year-Round Library any time before their 5th birthday.  As parents turn in reading logs, their children will receive fun prizes to encourage them to keep reading.  Drop in and register at the library – your participation will be a rewarding experience for both you and your child.
