The Honorable John P. Kacavas, United States Attorney for the District of New Hampshire will be the commencement speaker. The public is invited to attend the Laconia Academy Graduation.

Over the last 41 years, 1,200 Lakes Region residents have returned to school at night to earn their high school diploma.  Thirty high school diplomas will be awarded on June 7th.   Many of the graduates are unemployed and need their high school diploma to get a job, earn a pay increase or job promotion.  Some graduates returned to Laconia Academy to increase their own sense of self-esteem and personal self-worth.  Other graduates enrolled in the program will enter new career fields, find a better job, or will have the opportunity to be hired now that they have their high school diploma.

Eight June 2013 Laconia Academy Graduates are going on to post-secondary education. Four graduates will be entering the military service.

The Secrets Of Cellar Holes At Gilmanton Historical Society

Gilmanton cellar-hole.jpg

A cellar hole in the woods has stories to tell.  Learn more from Adair Mulligan at the Gilmanton Historical Society on Tuesday, May 28, 7:30 pm at Old Town Hall in Gilmanton Iron Works.

Gilmanton Historical Society opens their 2013 summer series with “A Walk Back in Time, the Secrets of Cellar Holes” on Tuesday, May 28th, 7:30 pm at the Old Town Hall in Gilmanton Iron Works.   Northern New England is full of reminders of past lives: stone walls, old foundations, a century-old lilac struggling to survive as the forest reclaims a once sunny dooryard. What forces shaped settlement, and later abandonment, of these places? Adair Mulligan introduces us to the rich stories behind the abandoned cellar hole in the woods.

Author of The Gunstock Parish, A History of Gilford, NH, Adair Mulligan has also contributed to Proud to Live Here in the Connecticut River Valley;  Where the Great River Rises, An Atlas of the Upper Connecticut River; and Beyond the Notches: Stories of Place in New Hampshire’s North Country. Currently she is Executive Director of the Hanover Conservancy. She served for 20 years as Conservation Director of the Connecticut River Joint Commission.  Adair  holds a master’s degree from Smith College., and lives in Lyme Center, NH.

Refreshments and social hour begin at 7 pm; the program begins promptly at 7:30.  The Society’s Museum is also open at 7 pm.  The program is free and open to the public; donations to support the work of the Society are gratefully received.

The Society’s summer series is presented on the 4th Tuesday of each month, May through September.  In June, Adam Boyce brings us the story of the Old Country Fiddler; Gilmanton Architecture is Richard Guy Wilson’s subject in July; Pat Clarke presents the history of the Gilmanton Academy in August; The summer’s final program in September features New Hampshire in the Age of Clipper Ships with Glenn Knoblock.

The Gilmanton Historical Society offers a number of publications on the history of the Town.  They are available at all Society programs, at the Town Clerk’s Office, and at the Brick House in Gilmanton Corners.   The Society’s Museum, at Old Town Hall is open Saturdays from 10 am until noon, and at 7 pm before each of the summer programs.

Advocacy Grant Awarded to Gilmanton Year-Round Library

United for Libraries has selected the Gilmanton Year-Round Library as one of only ten libraries to receive expert advocacy training from the Citizens-Save-Libraries program, funded by the Neal-Schuman Foundation.

Advocacy experts will provide onsite training to friends of the library groups, library directors and trustees and help them develop blueprints for advocacy campaigns to restore, increase or save threatened library budgets. Those libraries and groups selected for training have committed to share their knowledge and experiences through presentations at local conferences, articles written for state library association journals and via webinars and Skype calls.

The Board has two goals: to raise awareness and support for ongoing funding for the library from patrons, citizens and voters of the Town of Gilmanton, and to raise enough money to keep the Library open after the November 1 closing date, when the existing funding will run out.

United for Libraries: The Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundations, is a division of the American Library Association that supports citizens who govern, promote, advocate, and fundraise for libraries. United for Libraries brings together Library Trustees, advocates, friends, and foundations into a partnership that creates a powerful force for libraries in the 21st century.
