Gilmanton Corner Library News

National Library Week is the celebration of contributions libraries and librarians have made to American societies. Libraries stimulate the mind, encourage people to read, teach young children that books are exciting, and provide an endless source of information. National Library Week encourages people to take time to acknowledge the benefits of supporting the local library.

National Poetry Month has been held every year in April since 1996, when publishers, literary organizations, libraries, schools and poets around the country band together to celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture. Please join the Gilmanton Corner Library in observing this event by dropping by the library and checking out a new poetry book: Lunch Money by Carol Shields, Bilbo’s Last Song by J.R.R. Tolkien, or The Monsterologist by Katz, or a favorite poet.

The Gilmanton Corner Library has renewed its 3 museum passes to the Currier Museum, Manchester (Shogun Exhibit), SEE Science Kids Museum, Manchester, and The New Hampshire Historical Museum, Concord. Plan to take the kids soon!

To reserve a book or request a book call the library on Mondays and Wednesdays 3 - 5 pm, and Saturdays 10 am - 12 pm. Reminder: Summer hours start May 1. They are Mondays and Thursdays 2 - 8 pm, Tuesdays 2 - 4 pm, Wednesdays and  Fridays 2 - 6 pm.

Scenes From Ancient Pompeii

Gilmanton School.png

Andrew Periale during a performance at the school

Sixth graders at Gilmanton School have been hard at work this past month, researching, writing, constructing, and rehearsing a puppet performance about life in ancient Pompeii, the Roman city buried under volcanic ash in the year 79 A.D. Using simple and recycled materials such as newspaper, cardboard boxes, and masking tape, students built puppet characters that told the story of life in Pompeii before Mt. Vesuvius erupted. Their research and script-writing  grewn out of their study of ancient cultures, including Mesopotamia, Babylonia, Rome, Egypt, and Greece.  With help from Artist-in-Residence Andrew Periale of Perry Alley Theatre, students recreated the ancient culture.

Andrew Periale and his wife, Bonnie Periale, are co-founders of Perry Alley Theatre, and have brought their combination of puppetry, music, dance, theatre, and design to audiences for over 20 years. They also produce a puppetry magazine, Puppetry International, and have received several awards for their work, including an Emmy nomination. The couple shares their love of puppets and drama with students during school residencies like the one in Gilmanton.

For more information about Perry Alley Theatre, please visit their website, www.perryalley.com.

The Artist-in-Residence program at Gilmanton School is made possible by a grant from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, kind support from the Gilmanton School PTA, and the generosity of the Gilmanton community.

Letter

A library plan for Gilmanton as proposed by Dr. Philip Ray in his March 27 letter is laudable, but such a plan must be grounded in the reality of current conditions. First, contrary to what Dr. Ray implies, there has been cooperation among the libraries; e.g., a joint effort that determined the lack of financial viability for offering e-books to library patrons through the New Hampshire State Library.

Second, I concur with Dr. Ray that it is unrealistic “to expect that a growing town like Gilmanton can have adequate library service without taxpayer support.”  Specifically, it’s unlikely that the three libraries working together could do so effectively with an annual allocation of only $3,700.

However, third, only one of the three libraries, the Gilmanton Corner Public Library, operates with a popularly-elected public board of trustees that evidences financial accountability to the electorate through the Town of Gilmanton’s budgetary process and annual auditing.  Perhaps if the other libraries were to operate similarly that might be enough to tip the balance in favor of wider public financial support.

Letter

Dear Suncook Valley Sun:

It has come to my attention that as of the Gilmanton voting in the beginning of March, the Gilmanton Year-Round Library will not be receiving the 45,000 dollars it requested to help with electricity and book costs. As a 14 year old who loves to read, this upsets me and my friends who also share my passion in books. I rely on the library for interesting books and resources for projects.

Many people come up to me and ask “why don’t you just use the school library?” Well the answer to that is simple, though it’s convenient, the school library is small and doesn’t contain very much information on any one given topic. Plus, it’s not open to use after school when it is needed most.

If the library doesn’t get the money it needs to continue, then the set closing date will be in November of this year. I just don’t think it’s fair for a library that helps so many people to be denied the one thing it needs to continue to help people. Please help this library stay in business for the sake of the kids and families who rely on this library for its resources. I am sure that if everyone donates just a little we will be able to keep this library available for everyone to use. I thank everyone who is in support of keeping this library open.
