Gilmanton Corner Library Celebrates Children’s Book Week
Children’s Book Week, May 7 - 13, is the national celebration of
books and reading for youth. In 1913, Franklin Matthiews, the
librarian of the Boy Scouts of America began touring the country to
promote higher standards in children’s books. He proposed creating a
Children’s Book Week in the belief that children’s books and
literacy are life changers. Children’s Book Week was established in
1919, and is the longest-running literacy initiative in the country
and is as essential today as it was in 1919 with its fundamental
declaration: "A great nation is a reading nation!"
The Corner Library will be honoring these Children’s Choice Book
Award Authors:
Grades K-2; Marc Brown - "Arthur Adventure Books," Grades 3-4; Mary
Pope Osborne - "Magic Tree House Series," Grades 5-6; Andrew
Clements - "Frindle," "No Talking," "Extra Credit," Grades 7-8; S.E.
Hinton - "The Outsiders" and Lois Lowry - "The Giver."
Just in at the library are large magnets with a beautiful painting
of the Corner Library at $5.00, and soon to follow our library book
bags to celebrate our 100th anniversary celebration!
Summer hours begin May 1: Mondays and Thursdays 2-8, Wednesdays and
Fridays 2-6, Tuesdays 2-4; call 267-6200 for more information.
Letter To the Editor
Sadly, a great deal of misinformation is being circulated by a
small, but dedicated group of people who are intent on sabotaging
the process of nominating the Suncook River into the Rivers
Management and Protection program. These people, including Rep. Dan
McGuire, have intentionally made clear misstatements of fact about
this process in order to generate unreasonable fear in riverfront
landowners and others that somehow they are going to face a whole
new set of Draconian restrictions on what they can do with their
land. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Restrictions on the siting of new landfills, or expansion of
existing landfills, restrictions on new dams in certain sections and
limits on the use of sludge in a certain river corridor, that
already exists under separate statute, are included for certain
designated segments. Establishing instream flows has never
interfered with agricultural uses along designated rivers. The
designation of these segments is up to the recommendations of the
rivers advisory committees. These have always included
riverfront landowners since the first rivers were designated with
the passage of the original law. The members of these advisory
committees are appointed by the select boards in each town. Any
additional restrictions on riverfront usage have to be voted on by
the voters of each town at town meeting or SB2 meeting.
It’s time that our Boards of Selectmen take the time to hear from
all sides of this issue, especially those who have been deeply
involved with this process for two decades and who can explain
rationally what this program does and does not do.
