Library Week And Earth Day Celebrated At Gilmanton Corner Library

National Library Week is April 8-14. This year’s theme "You Belong @ Your Library," is especially meaningful as the Gilmanton Corner Library celebrates its 100 years as a public town library. The Gilmanton community has done much for the library to show it’s as much of an asset today as it was in 1912!

Come and see the accomplishments our neighbors have done. And while you are at the library, purchase a glass ornament to remember this special occasion!

Earth Day, April 22, is a day to reflect on our planet, our environment and what we can do to keep them healthy. Senator Gaylord Nelson worked tirelessly on the state and national level to protect the environment and was responsible for the first Earth Day in 1970. The Corner Library will be celebrating Earth Day with crafts, coloring books and stickers. Now would be a good time to check out "Cut the Carbon Kit" and find out how energy efficient your appliances are in your home. Remember to recycle for a better world!

A Reminder: Summer Hours start May 1st and will be Monday and Thursday 2-8, Tuesday 2-4, Wednesday and Friday 2-6. For more information call 267-6200.

Letter

While a number of people are calling our town offices to complain about how terrible our dirt roads are this season, (and mine was the one the school bus made the paper with and was impassable without 4-wheel drive) I wanted to publicly thank one of our road workers.

On a cold, rainy day, Bert had stopped his truck and trailer after just dumping rock onto Sargent Rd. As he flagged me to go by him, I was not at all sure my truck would clear his without me sliding off into the ditch. When he saw my apprehension, this good Samaritan hopped into the driver’s seat and drove me through to clear road again. A small gesture maybe, but it meant a lot to me. Thank you, Bert!

News From The Children’s Room At The Gilmanton Year Round Library

Everyone has a story. Come write yours! As part of our National Library Week Celebration, we are inviting our young patrons to stop in, read Daniel Kirk’s "Library Mouse" and then write and illustrate their very own book. We will host a "Meet the Author" story time Thursday, April 12th from 6 – 7 pm when they can read (or have the librarian read) their work. Light refreshments will be served.

During the month of April, we are asking for help in decorating our children’s room for National Poetry Month. Illustrate your favorite children’s poem and bring it to the Library Barn to be displayed. Any medium can be used (paints, crayons, markers, clay, etc.) and it can even be 3-D! Not sure which poem to choose? Check out our display for inspiration.

Gilmanton Year Round Library News

As the winter ice melts and sunshine returns to our New England towns, we are ready for a big stretch and a little exploration away from our winter dens. While our fellow hibernators, such as the bear, head out to raid bird feeders - we have our share of excitement to be found right at our local Library.

In celebration of National Library Week (April 8th-14th) Gilmanton Year Round Library will be introducing four new monthly adult programs.

For those of us with a love of pen and paper, The Inkwells will be meeting on the first Thursday of the month at six o’clock. Do you have an eye for beauty, a need to click, click away? Then sign up for The Shutterbugs, our photography club, meeting the second Thursday of every month also at six o’clock. Anyone craving crafts, but just can’t quite manage them alone? Join us for "Let’s get Crafty," crafting for the clumsy on the third Tuesday of the month at six o’clock as well. No talent required! On Friday afternoons, we would like to invite our parents to After Naptime, it’s Booktime! Light, easy reading titles for the parents and entertainment for the little ones during the discussion is provided. This group will meet at two o’clock.

In addition to these new monthly programs, we also invite all patrons to enter in our Basket Giveaway. For every item checked out during the week of April 8th -April 14th your name will be entered in a drawing to win either a "Night at the Movies" or a "Cozy Corner" gift basket. This is just a small way we hope to show you how important your presence and support truly is to the Gilmanton Year Round Library! Our message during National Library Week is that, you belong at your library!

We can’t wait for spring to bring us returning patrons and plenty of new faces!

Any questions can be directed to Tasha LeRoux via [email protected] or call 364-2400.
