Gilmanton’s One-Room Schools,  July 26 at Gilmanton Historical Society

The Sanborn school, one of as many as 14 in Gilmanton, was located near the intersection of Sargent Road and Middle Route. Learn more about Gilmanton’s One-Room Schools, at Gilmanton Historical Society on Tuesday, July 26, 7 pm at Old Town Hall in Gilmanton Iron Works.

The Gilmanton Historical Society will present a program on the town’s one-room schools on Tuesday, July 26th at the Old Town Hall on Route 140 in Gilmanton Iron Works.   Refreshments and social hour begins at 7 pm and the program starts promptly at 7:30.

Pat Clarke, a member of the Society’s Board, has researched the history of one-room schools in Gilmanton.   His presentation covers the period 1860 to 1940 and will include locations and photos of one-room schools, the composition of the student body, and descriptions of teachers including their training, years teaching in our school system, class sizes, pay, and appraisals of their work.  He will  also  briefly review typical course content.  The Society especially invites people who attended the Town’s one-room schools to come and tell of their experiences.

There will be two more programs in this year’s Gilmanton Historical Society summer series.  Former Agriculture Commissioner Steve Taylor returns on August 23rd to tell us about Cows and Communities.  The Society takes a field trip to the Wright Museum in Wolfeboro on Saturday, August 27th.  The final program, September 27th brings back Your Hit Parade.

The Gilmanton Historical Society offers a number of publications on the history of the Town.  They are available at all Society programs, at the Town Clerk’s Office, and at the Brick House in Gilmanton Corners.  The Society’s Museum, in the Academy Building, is open by appointment.  Call curators Jeanine Moorhead 267-8870 or George Carpenter 267-8907.    For more information about the summer series, pick up a copy of the flier at the Academy or call President John Dickey at 267-6098.

Gilmanton 4th Of July Association (G4JA) Leadership Retires

2011 was another fun and very busy year for the G4JA. The weather was beautiful for both events and the entire community came out to celebrate.

Even though we had to use smaller shells and a longer set back (because of new State regulations), the fireworks were still amazing. Wendell Beck and his crew from American Thunder, were once again our brilliant pyro-technicians.

Thanks again to parade coordinators Jack Fanning and Glen Lines, who got everybody lined up and launched the parade.  Once the color guard from Gilmanton’s American Legion, Ellis Geddes Leavit Post 102 presented the flag in front of the Academy, Lanie Rosato our local soprano, sang the national anthem. Then, after a moment of silence for our service men and women, veteran Israel Willard, rang the bell in the newly re-installed cupola. The tolling bell, heard by the silent crowd, was an emotional tribute to our day of patriotism. Roy Buttrick of Frisky Hill, provided the sound system, and did a wonderful job as Master of Ceremonies interviewing parade participants as they marched by.

The 2011 Parade Award Winners are:

Best Kid’s Bike
• 1st Place - Johnny Langlois on the Red Kawasaki (please come pick up your blue ribbon).
• 2nd Place - Red scooter with the skateboard (please let us know who you are).
• 3rd Place- The unicycle (please let us know who you are).

Plaques
• Funniest - Lindon Garlic Farm “garlic twirler”, the Womack Family.
• Most Original - 1964 Dark Blue Corvair Convertible, Ray Moore.
• Most Beautiful - 1962 Corvette, Richard Rubino.
• Best of Show/Antique Car – 1962 Red Studebaker Lark Convertible w/white top, Fred Buchholz.
• Judge’s Choice – 1969 Camaro (please let us know who you are and come pick up your plaque).

The G4JA would also like to thank our additional crew of volunteers, who step in here and there, to make it all happen.  G4JA couldn’t do it without your very generous donation of precious time and expertise!

Included in our thank yous are:  John and Carolyn Dickey; Justin Leavitt and his recycling staff; Ralph Goodwin; Phil and Danielle Eisenmann, Gilmanton Youth Organization; Don Guarino; Band:Bob and The Hay Balers; Jay Reed; Lou and Bert Philipps; Mickey Daigle; Judy Williams/Gary Lines of Parks and Recreation and the Gilmanton Police/Fire Departments.

Thanks also to the Gilmanton taxpayers for budgeting $3,250 toward the fireworks every year and thanks to our local citizens for your generous individual/tub donations!  100% of these hard earned monies go right back into the G4JA account to help pay for advertising, PR, web presence, novelties, parade awards/ribbons/flags, etc. and of course next year’s fireworks!

Finally, Steve and Kristie Owens, your G4JA leaders, have retired.  Sadly, this was our last year to head up the festivities.  It has been a grand run of consecutive celebrations, but we are tired and want to pass the baton to another, younger/energetic couple (or ten!?!).  We will act as mentors (help out where we can), hand over all materials/files and hope you have as much fun as we’ve had these past 8+ years.

If you’re interested and would like to head up the historic G4JA, please call Kristie or Steve Owens at 267-6434 for further details. Or you can email Kristie or Steve at [email protected]

In order to be properly prepared for 2012 events/town budgets, please respond by September 1, 2011.  The G4JA web site is www.gilmanton4th.org and you can also go there for some insightful information.

Animals, Animals! Step Into A Book, Book And

Movie Reviews At The Gilmanton Corner Library

Summer reading is in full swing at the Gilmanton Corner Library. Children are wearing the Free animal masks while reading their favorite animal book. Young readers are filling up their Free book bags with mysteries and solving the Sudko, Word Search and Brain Teaser game book marks.

This year we are pleased to have Ayden (age 13) and Alec (age 12) Carpenter doing book and movie reviews for young readers.

EONA by Alison Goodman- “One of the best books we have ever read” Ayden and Alec.

SEEKERS by Erin Hunter- The book was well written and I really like how the book was put together in sections” Ayden.

THE GREAT HAMPSTER MASSACRE by Katie Davies-”The book was mysterious but really fun to read. I suggest this book to young adult readers because it’s a great novel. Readers should buy it or check it out at the library. Awesome but heartbreaking” Ayden.

DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: RODRICK RULES -DVD-The movie was hilarious to see the back and forth funny conflict between brothers. I recommend that kids around the age of 9 and up should watch it. Roderick Rules is better than the first movie” Ayden and Alec.

AVATAR- “The movie is an awesome action movie.  It is about a man named Jake Sully who was in the Marines and went to a planet called Pandora. This planet had indigenous people called the Navrid. Overall this movie was one of the best I’ve seen” Ayden.

The Carpenter brothers are also doing story hour at 3:00 on Wednesdays if you moms would like to shop at the farmers market (Town Hall.) A librarian will be in attendance.
The quilt raffle is on going, $1.00/ticket or 6 tickets/$5.00, drawing Columbus Day weekend. Plan a trip to one of three museums that we have Free passes to. Don’t forget to stop by the library and pick up your book log from TD Bank and receive $10 after you have read 10 books! Great way to read and save. Please call 267-6200 for more information. Have a Great summer!

Reminder: The Library’s “Sidewalk” fund raiser is still on going.  We are almost at our goal.  If you would like to help, please send a check marked “sidewalk” to: Gilmanton Corner Library, PO Box 504, Gilmanton, NH 03237.  Thanks!
