Gilmanton Iron Works Library Opens For The 2011 Season

The Gilmanton Iron Works Library will open for the 2011 season on Saturday, May 28th, welcoming the public Tuesdays and Saturdays from 9:30 to noon. In addition, the Library will also participate in the town-wide Flea Market held on the 28th at the Gilmanton Safety Building on Route 140. Visitors to both locations will have the chance to support the Library’s fund-raising efforts.  Raffle tickets will be for sale for a Barnes & Noble color Nook electronic reader as well as a $50 gift certificate to Amazon.com.

“The choice of prizes was easy for us,” explains Susannah Chance, president of the Gilmanton Iron Works Library Association.  “Our mission is to encourage reading in our community and these two prizes will provide two easy, portable, and affordable options. We like the idea of someone curling up next fall with a new color Nook, enjoying a good story, or a parent downloading a book for a child who joined us at Story Hour.” The prizes will be awarded when the winners are drawn on Labor Day.

Tickets cost $5 and will be on sale throughout the summer at the Library as well as at other community events, such as the Fourth of July and Old Home Day celebrations.  The Library will also be holding Book and Bake Sales on June 18th and July 16th.  Special books will be offered for sale, as well as a wide range of baked goods, sweets, and other treats.

Built in 1916, the Gilmanton Iron Works Library is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  A small group of volunteers maintains the building and the library’s extensive collection of books and DVDs.  For more information, visit the Library at 10 Elm Street in the Iron Works, or on-line at the library’s Facebook page.

Attention Gilmanton Residents
Break The Cycle With Mandatory Recycling

A year ago, the Recycling Committee was given the task to review the town’s current recycling program, to examine other recycling options that are available, to help educate the residents on the benefits of recycling and to make recommendations to the Board of Selectman on the best options for the future of recycling in Gilmanton.  The committee has  heard from various experts in the field, checked out other facilities, researched several town programs and taken a town survey.  After careful consideration, the committee came to a unanimous decision.

On Monday, May 23, 2011 the Recycling Committee met with the Board of Selectman and recommended that the town adopt a Mandatory Recycling Program.  The committee suggested a start date of August 1, 2011 to allow time for residents to understand and prepare for the new program.  It is now up to the Board of Selectmen to review and make a decision on this proposal.

New Children’s Books For The Gilmanton Year Round Library

The Libri Foundation’s Books For Children program awarded the Gilmanton Year Round Library with 84 new children’s books totaling $1,420.39!  The library celebrated with a “Spring Has Sprung” Story Time where all of the books were displayed.  Many of the books went home that day with children, but they will be back and there are still more to see.  Come on in to the library today to check them out.

Along with picture books, chapter books and non-fiction, we received an additional $350 worth of math and science books through the same foundation thanks to a generous donation from Hal Berenson and Laura Ackerman.

This grant was a matching grant and in order to be eligible for the funds, $350 had to be raised by the GYRL Association through fundraising.
