New Recycling Committee Formed May 11, 2010
Gilmanton and Gilmanton Iron Works has a new Recycling Committee! New
members are: Lori Baldwin, Don Guarino Justin Leavitt, Johnna McKenna,
Breane Vachon, Lew Henry, Israel Willard, Sue Smith, Andrew Stockwell,
Barbara Swanson. Our new motto is “Break the Cycle...Recycle”
One of the committee’s main goals is to educate residents, both seasonal
and permanent, of the advantages to recycling their waste and help to make
the process easy. We plan on showcasing the ways it benefits the earth and
save energy when new products are made from old. A “Facts of the Month”
handout will be provided to residents who visit the Recycling Facility.
We also plan on buying recycling bins on a pre-paid basis. Bins will be
available for $5.00. Sample bins will be on display at the Recycling
Facility.
The good news is that recycling is “up” from last year, especially
plastics (approx 2-3 times more).
The Recycling Facility is now able to handle all materials that are
coded 1- 7. All codes 1-7 can now be put in together without having to
separate them by numbers. Increasing your recycling, would significantly
reduce the amount of trash we send to Wheelabrator, which would in turn cost
the town less, and reduce budget costs.
Our schools are now set up to recycle and plans are in the works to get
students actively involved in a poster contest.
On May 18th, a tour was given to children from the elementary school to
show them how they could help and get involved in the recycling process.
On May 23, we conducted a survey to gather data on why people don’t
recycle. Survey results and upcoming articles will be available in
local newspapers and also on our town website
http://gilmantonnh.org.
The Gilmanton Recycling Committee plans to be actively involved at the
4th of July parade and during Old Home Day. We will also have the Recycle
Mobile again this year for the 4th of July and perhaps for Old Home Day.
Our next meeting will be Tuesday, June 8th at 6:30 pm.
