Letter To The Editor
GPS From Your Library

We all know that libraries have expanded from books, to audio books, magazines, journals, CDs, movies, some even loan art work.

I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised when a GPS was added to the list at the Gilmanton Year-Round Library, thanks to a generous patron. I think maps are great but I have always had a hard time with them and they’re not much help in city neighborhoods. Anyone trying to read their Map Quest directions while driving knows it’s not a safe way to go.

So a device that provides assistance in getting me where I need to go safely and with confidence gets my vote. I have now used the Library’s GPS twice, once to get from Gilmanton to Washington, DC, and a second time to Baltimore: the city, then the airport and then to where my daughter lives in northwest Maryland. The GPS words ‘you have reached your destination’ are met with pleasure and relief.

I will continue to take out the GPS with my library card, I hope other considering using it to.

Betty Mitchell,
Gilmanton

Alec Medine Wins Gilmanton School Geographic Bee Moves One Step closer to $25,000 College Scholarship

Submitted By Carol N. Locke, Principal

Alec Medine, an 8th Grade student at Gilmanton School won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee on January 13, 2010 and a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship. The school-level Bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 20th annual National Geographic Bee. The Bee is sponsored by the National Geographic Society.

The kickoff for this year’s Bee was the week of November 9, with thousands of schools around the United States and in the five U.S. territories participating. The school winners, including Alec Medine will now take a written test; up to 100 of the top scorers in each state will be eligible to compete in their state Bee April 9, 2010.

The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for state champions and teacher-escorts to participate in the National Geographic Bee national championship on May 25 and 26, 2010. The first-place national winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarship and a lifetime membership in the Society.

“Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek will moderate the national finals on May 26. The program will air on television. Check local listings for dates and times.

Anyone can brush up on geography with GeoBee Challenge, an online geography quiz at www.nationalgeographic,com/geobee,  which poses five new questions a day from previous National Geographic Bees. The GeoBee Challenge board game also provides geography fun for the whole family. The board game won the prestigious Parents’ Choice Award.

The National Geographic Society is one of the world’s largest nonprofit scientific and educational organizations. Founded in 1888 to “increase and diffuse geographic knowledge,” the Society works to inspire people to care about  the planet. It reaches more than 300 million people worldwide each month through its official journal, National Geographic, and other magazines; National Geographic channel; television documentaries; music; radio; films; books; DVDs; maps; school publishing programs; interactive media; and merchandise. National Geographic has funded more than 8,000 scientific research projects and supports an education program combating geographic illiteracy.
