School in Gilmanton, NH, were recently honored at the 10th Annual Scholar
Leader Awards Banquet on June 4, 2009, at the Center of New Hampshire in
Manchester, NH. The students were presented with an award. The criteria
included demonstrating academic initiative and scholarship, providing
service to classmates and school, exemplifying positive attitudes and
demonstrating leadership in the classroom and school activities.
Nearly 380 students, educators, and parents attended this banquet to
celebrate the achievements of the middle level students who are
representative of the many fine young adolescents in all middle level
schools in the State of New Hampshire. Also in attendance were Mary Heath,
NH Deputy Commissioner of Education; John Lyons, Esq., State Board of
Education; and Dr. Jay Buckey, a former astronaut and current professor of
medicine at Dartmouth Medical School. Dr. Buckey was the evening’s keynote
speaker. Seventy-seven 7th and 8th grade students from 39 schools were
honored at the Tenth Annual Middle Level Scholar Leader Awards Banquet.
The event was organized by the New Hampshire Association for Middle
Level Education (NHAMLE) and the New England League of Middle Schools
(NELMS) with supporting sponsorship from Lifetouch National School Studios.
Dr. Robert Spear, Executive Director of NELMS, praised the students for
the willingness to help others and for choosing excellence in their personal

creating environments that promote good citizenship and scholarship. Spear
noted that “when students, parents, and schools work together, powerful

State of The Loon - The Natural History, Challenges, and
Successes of Loons in New Hampshire”
Saturday, July 11, 4:30 p.m, Shellcamp Club House, Gilmanton, NH
Have you ever wondered why a loon’s eyes are red? Why loon chicks ride
on their parents’ backs? What loons are saying with those eerie calls in the
night? Join biologist Harry Vogel as he talks about this unique symbol of
New Hampshire’s wild lakes and its special place in the hearts of New
Hampshire residents. Harry will talk about loons, where loons fit in with
other birds (you might be surprised!), challenges facing loons, and the Loon
Preservation Committee’s work to safeguard New Hampshire’s threatened loon
population.
Harry Vogel is the director of the Loon Preservation Committee in New
Hampshire. The mission of the LPC is to restore and maintain a healthy
population of loons throughout New Hampshire; to monitor the health and
productivity of loon populations as sentinels of environmental quality; and
to promote a greater understanding of loons and the natural world. LPC’s
success in protecting New Hampshire’s loon population has been attributed in
large part to the monitoring, research, management and educational
activities of LPC staff, members, and volunteers.
