Fox Tale Books
Since colonial times, when Yankee pioneers first planted villages and
homesteads in New Hampshire’s rugged hill country, the Granite State’s rural
settlers have cultivated a vibrant pastoral society. Author Bruce D. Heald
offers a richly nostalgic recollection of the traditions, pastimes and
storied names and locales that have helped New Hampshire’s backwoodsmen
carve out a unique identity in his book Memories from New Hampshire’s Lakes
and Mountains: Fence Building and Apple Cider. Heald will be
discussing and signing Memories along with his homage to the Old Man on the
Mountain, 101 Glimpses of the Old Man on the Mountain at Fox Tale Books
Thursday, December 10 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
With stops to consider such classic northern New England activities as
ice fishing, maple sugaring and blueberry picking, Memories from New
Hampshire’s Lakes and Mountains: Fence Building and Apple Cider takes the
reader on a special journey through folk life during New Hampshire’s olden
days. Included in the book are fantastic photographs and artwork from the
early 1900s.
Heald is a professor of American history at Plymouth State University.
He is the author of more than 25 historical books about the lakes and
mountain region of New Hampshire.
Fox Tale Books is located at 5 Monument Square(where Rte. 140 meets Rte.

NH RC&DArea Councils Support Town of Gilmanton efforts to Improve
Firefighting Capability
The New Hampshire Rural Fire Protection Initiative (NHRFPI), a program
of the North Country and Southern New Hampshire Resource Conservation and
Development (RC&D) Area Councils, is working with the Town of Gilmanton Fire
Department, Selectmen, Planning Board, Emergency Management and other town
officials to develop a Rural Fire Water Resource Plan. This service is
provided at no cost to the town and is funded through the office of New
Hampshire Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
NHRFPI’s Rural Fire Water Resource Plan will identify, evaluate, and map
water resource sites available to local and mutual aid fire personnel for
firefighting purposes. As residential development expands into forested and
rural areas, the threat of wildfire becomes a greater concern and issue
facing community planners. The plan will assist community leaders in
identifying and prioritizing those areas of town currently lacking adequate
water drafting facilities. Developed in collaboration with the Fire
Department, Selectmen, Planning Board, Emergency Management, other town
officials and the public, the final plan will be a result of mutually agreed
to actions that the Town will implement to help improve its emergency
response to firefighting. The plan will complement and enhance the
local hazard mitigation plan and help ensure the safety and well being of
town residents from the threat of structural and wildland fire.
All town residents are welcome and encouraged to participate in the
planning process. For more information please contact Pat Tarpey, Project
Administrator at North Country RC&D (603) 527-2093.
