Jennifer Lynn Ahern Memorial Blood Drive
Jennifer Lynn Ahern is the daughter of Leon and Debbie Sargent of
Epsom. Jennifer was an advocate for blood drives for the American
Red Cross, although she could not donate blood her story has been
shared in many community services throughout her life and since her
death. When Jennifer went into Renal Failure in 1979, it was
considered a catastrophic illness. At age 5 she would learn about
life on dialysis, transfusions, and where blood comes from.
If we look back to the 70’s,80’s and 90’s blood donations dropped
drastically due to the fears of HIV and Aids. Jennifer told her
story, a cute little 5 year old was able to grab the attention of
many New Hampshire blood donors who came out to help save this child
sustain life while waiting for a Kidney Transplant. Her story became
the most read story and she became the front page story of the
millennium in the Concord Monitor. She endured over 40 surgeries and
bouncing back to continue helping the American Red Cross with life
saving blood donations.
Jennifer’s lifetime work has been credited by the American Red Cross
and was awarded in 2010 “The American Red Cross Hero Award.” Her
lifetime work reached Washington, DC, a letter of recognition in the
House of Congress and the House of Senate in Washington.
During the evening of August 7, 2010, Jennifer passed away as her
heart stopped pumping blood.
This year is Jennifer’s 5 year Memorial service and our family has
invited another hero’s family to participate with us in recruiting
blood donors. Louie G. Smirnioudis of the Windmill Restaurant in
Concord. Louie, a very kind and generous man, was well known to
Community Service. Louie served over 600 families Thanksgiving
dinner free to all who stopped into the Windmill. Louie’s sons
continue this tradition on Thanksgiving. Louie has received many
honors during his lifetime including “The American Red Cross hero
award.”

Epsom Food Pantry
Well, another sweltering week. We are fortunate to have a small air
conditioner directly in the section where we store our food to keep
it cool.
The fresh veggies are being scoffed right up so if you have extras
do not forget us. Also, I just talked with Ken and he had some
definite wants: soups (not tomato), jellies and jams, peanut
butter, and canned carrots and beets.
We now have over 90 Epsom families participating in our program. I
can tell you now that the response has been overwhelming, and a
there is a great need in our town, especially some of our dear
seniors. We are so delighted that we can help to make life easier
for them. So, when you give, know that it is a blessing to our
neighbors that need our support.
Until next time,
Priscilla

June Pease Quilt Exhibit, Gallery Walk And Trunk Show At Epsom
Public Library
The Epsom Public library is pleased to present an exciting new
exhibit featuring quilts by well-known fiber artist, June Pease.
The exhibit runs through September 5th, and may be viewed during
regular library hours: Monday – Thursday, 10 am to 7 pm and
Saturday, 9 am to 1 pm. Additionally, be sure to mark your
calendars for our not-to-be-missed quilt event and reception on
Friday, August 28 at 7 pm, when June will give a gallery walk and
present a trunk show featuring more quilts from her extensive body
of work.
June began quilting in 1978, taking instruction from a local
teacher. She had always enjoyed art and sewing and combined them
with some original ideas to begin her 34-year tenure as quilter,
designer, and teacher. Years of retail consulting have permitted her
to balance the artistic and commercial aspects of her craft.
June’s teaching opportunities have been self-initiated, in support
of local guilds, and through a variety of retail quilting and fabric
outlets. As an academically trained teacher and enthusiastic quilter
she is able to create lively informative classes that appeal to a
broad audience; young and old, contemporary and traditional.
Appliqué and geometric piecework find their way equally into her
work. Known for her variety of patterns, June is best appreciated
for the creative uses of fabric and colors within the domain of
commercially available patterns. Occasional but outstanding creative
works round out a truly exceptional portfolio.
June exhibits and consistently ribbons in guilds in New Hampshire
and Vermont and, since 1990, at the annual Vermont Quilt Festival.
She garnered special recognition at the East Coast Quilter’s
Alliance - A Quilter’s Gathering 2001, where she was awarded the
Publisher’s Award from The Quilter Magazine. Her creations have been
offered through the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen and Keepsake
Quilting as well as many local craft outlets. “Starry Night,” June’s
popular holiday creation, exhibited at the New England Quilt Museum
in Lowell Massachusetts. In her first North Carolina exhibitions
June received Best of Show for one of her signature appliqué works,
“In Celebration: A Marriage” and Judges Choice for the “Roseville
Appliqué” at the 2004 Dixie Classic Fair
Examples of June’s work can be found in Free Style Quilts by Susan
Carlson and Sky Dyes by Mickey Lawler, both available through C&T
Publishing. June’s creation, “Elm Leaves and Lilacs,” graces the
cover and is a featured pattern in Jennifer Chiaverini’s latest
pattern book, Return to Elm Creek (Fall 2005) currently available
through C&T Publishing as well as in quilt shops. June is also a
Quilt Consultant and Designer for Red Rooster Fabrics of New York
City. The Quilter Magazine, summer issue 2003, featured one of the
quilts, “Garden Steps,” designed for Red Rooster Fabrics. Also
designed for Red Rooster, June’s “Mary Frances and Thimble Friends”
quilt was featured in Designers Quarters, Spring, 2005, and her
“English Trellis” quilt, using fabrics from the company’s Floral
Fancy collection, was featured in McCall’s Quilting, Spring, 2005.
The variety of individual and commercial influences makes her
uniquely qualified to showcase patterns, techniques and fabric
alike.
