Epsom Food
Pantry
Well, Santa will be here before you know it. This is a busy
time at the Pantry. We try and have little extras on hand for the
families. Liz is constantly on the lookout at the grocery stores. It
is an amazing trip, believe me, as she shops for the Pantry along
with her coupon satchel. Those checkout gals are amazing as they try
and deal with all the coupons.
And then our Ken. He is just awesome with
his running of our Pantry And the mileage he puts on his truck
picking up food with Armand and delivering to those in need with no
transportation.
And I cannot end with my praises without
the fabulous job our treasurer does. Cheryl is a task master to this
position and we all tow the mark because, as you know, IRS keeps an
eagle eye on nonprofit organizations. We save every slip and we
document every transaction we do. But we love doing it.
Now, we do need jelly or jams. and some
hash would be helpful. At this time of year anything you send us
will be gratefully received. Candy would be neat too, to pass out to
the parents to put in stockings. Thank you to one and all who either
send us money, place food in our boxes around town, and the family
that keep our eggs and milk in the fridge.
Until next time,
Priscilla

Letter To The Editor
With all due respect to Cheryl Dean, she
does finally concede my point in a round about way. To this day,
Lilly Ledbetter is poorer because of gender
pay/bonus/retirement/benefit discrimination even with the 1963 FAIR
PAY ACT having been in place for over half a century. Millions of
other women (and their families) especially those who were in retail
and service industries feel the effects of gender-based compensation
inequities and will for decades to come.
The Ledbetter case became an issue in the 2008 Presidential race
because (then) Senator Obama had supported enacting law to
counter the injustice of this “monumental case” while Senator McCain
opposed its passage. In 2009, a Democratic House and Senate passed
the Ledbetter Act and Democratic President Obama signed it into law.
There are other loopholes still out there.
I will concede a couple points to Cheryl re the airline. Eventually
all employees at my airline were sucked into Wall Street takeover,
junk bond debt, selling assets, legally ‘skimming’ pension funds,
slashing contracted wages, thumbing their noses at labor/management
protocol, dragging company through bankruptcy three times before
finally selling skeleton back to employees. Both sexes suffered in
the end. You just had to be there to see the subtle sexism at the
beginning of the takeover. You had to be there for the months of
strike. For the five year court battle all the way to the US Supreme
Court. For the additional ten years before receiving my final
settlement check.
