Letter

To my constituents in Allenstown, Epsom, and Pittsfield,

This week, the House met to continue with bills held over from last year. HB675, authorizing the use of automatic license plate scanners, had been narrowly approved by the Criminal Justice committee. It was debated at length between those who believed that using these devices would help to identify criminals on the roads, and those who who were concerned about the invasion of privacy and the possibilities for misuse, which have been evident when these devices were used in other states. The bill was not passed, 97-250, with Mary Frambach the only Representative from this district to vote in favor. Instead of just killing the bill, we voted 214-135 to “indefinitely postpone” it, a parliamentary maneuver that is the equivalent of driving a stake through its heart.

HB326, licensing polysomnographers (sleep medicine technicians) was sent to Interim Study 197-142, in my committee. HB350, prohibiting discrimination against the unemployed, had been inspired by a help wanted ad from New Jersey saying “no unemployed need apply.” There was no evidence that this is an issue in New Hampshire, but the bill passed 179-170, after heated debate.

SB190, changing various discounts to state parks, was briefly debated, primarily about the loss of free skiing at Cannon for seniors. Then it was tabled, 190-150, partly to allow time to consult with Cannon, but mostly, I believe, because it was lunch time!

HB492, which decriminalizes, regulates and taxes marijuana, was debated at great length, and after a number of votes it passed, 169-162. Alan Turcotte joined Dan and me in voting for it, in my case because I oppose the failed drug war.

Interested readers can email me for my newsletter, with more details than fit here.

Epsom Central School Staff And Faculty

Mrs. Susan Brodeur, Special Education Paraprofessional

Susan’s primary job is to work one-on-one with special ed students. She is currently certified at a Para 1 level and is working toward a rating of “Highly Qualified Paraprofessional.” After home-schooling her two children for grades K-3, she began teaching at ECS and is in her 18th year here. Susan provides supervision for children at their lunch, where she enjoys getting to know the kids.

Susan loves to see children’s “lights going on” when they grasp a concept. She enjoys watching them grow academically, physically, and socially. Since she believes that love makes a difference, it is sometimes hard for her to “back off,” to let go. She understands that her job is to work herself out of a job, to help children become independent learners and rejoin the educational mainstream.

Susan loves everything about working at ECS, particularly the caring, closely-knit family atmosphere among the staff. She would ask parents to spend more time with their kids listening, rather than talking. She believes that children have much to teach us and that we are all life-long learners.

Susan and Mark, her husband of 28 years, have two wonderful kids who graduated from ECS: a 26 year-old son living in Maine, and a 23 year-old daughter who is an RN and is working toward her bachelors degree in nursing. In her spare time, Susan loves to read, spend time with family, support her church, and “play” in her flower gardens.

Letter To The Editor

Finally! Tuesday January 14, there was an interview on nation wide television with a Republican senator in which this fact was discussed: Post WWII USA debt was 121% of our economy. We owed $121.00 for every $100.00 in gross national product.

Always enough money for war. Never enough money for education.
