Letter To The Editor
Epsom Town Office Space
I attended the Select Board Meeting Monday Sept. 30, 2013 during
which bids were opened for renovating Meeting House/Community
Center: ground floor for town offices, main floor for town meeting
space. During Select Meeting, some budget items for 2014 were
discussed including the fact that leasing strip mall space for town
offices in 2014 will be $3,024.00 per month ($36,288.00 per year).
It is my understanding this lease must be renewed 2015. Otherwise,
we must move. If we move, the single space must have more square
footage than we have in the mall (craziest lease contingency I ever
heard...go figure.)
It is my understanding that 8 firms were interested in the project.
The specs included expansion of library parking lot, new parking for
Community Center and water main extension from Rte 4. Select Board
Chair Don Harty opened the 4 bids which were received by deadline
date: 1. Severin Construction $979,960. - Milestone Eng. & Constr.
$1,095,792. - Martini Northern $1,108,660. - Turnstone Corp.
$1,164,769.
Select Chair Don Harty has reiterated many times that it is up to
the elected Board to accept/decline any bid. Further, any bond issue
for renovations will, of course, be decided upon by Epsom voters.
I played a minor role with a group of Epsom citizens who have
volunteered countless hours to come up with a checklist of specs for
needed renovations i.e. Town Offices are required by law to have a
secure, temperature/humidity controlled room for official
documents/deeds. Who knew?
Regardless of outcome, please thank Carole Browne for making her
studio available for group meetings; Lenny Gilman for spearheading
effort ‘to get the info done and onto paper’; Penny Graham for her
attention to detail and historical knowledge of the building; Mike
Loso for his expertise in building/renovation specifications.

Epsom Central School Staff And Faculty
Ruthie, along with Rita and Kimmy Kiley, make up the cafeteria team
called “The Gourmet Gals” by the teachers. Ruthie was an ECS bus
driver for 25 years and worked in the ECS cafeteria last year on a
part time basis. Although she loves the kids on her bus route, she
needed a change, and became a full time member of the cafeteria
team. She loves working in the kitchen with her friends. Ruthie
contributed her recipe for spaghetti pie, which has become a
favorite of the children. She finds the ECS children to be very
polite.
When asked how the four lunch periods work out, Ruthie says, “FAST!
Bang, bang, fast and furious. We get a short break between third and
fourth lunches, but otherwise need to prepare everything
beforehand.” Ruthie prepares all fruits and vegetables as well as
salads for the staff. Local products, such as apples from Meadow
Ledge Farm, are used as much as possible. “They give us a good
deal!” Ruthie says. “It’s very pleasant to work here. I like to be
in the kitchen. It’s busy from arrival to end, which is good for me.
The girls are great to work with.”
Ruthie believes that parents should be interested in their
children’s school day and what they have accomplished. She lives in
Epsom with Charles, her husband of 49 years. They have four children
ranging in age from 38 to 47, and six grandchildren. Ruthie loves to
work in her gardens and keep her lawns neat. In her spare time, she
enjoys cooking for her family and, in the summer, kayaking “as much
as possible.”
