Epsom Central School Staff And Faculty
Mrs. Linda Elliott-Malo, Science Teacher,
Grade 6th And 7th

Linda, a widow, was married again this summer and changed her name from Elliott to Elliott-Malo. She is entering her 26th year in education. Over the past five years, she has taught science to middle school students at ECS. Linda holds a BS in Elementary Education and a Master of Education in Environmental Services. She also has 12 continuing education certificate credits in subjects such as Ocean Studies, Climate Change, and Fresh Water Ecology. Linda enjoys these learning experiences and takes many ideas from them to share in her classroom. She would still like to get her doctorate in education.

Linda worked with her classes to write and receive a grant to establish the Hillside Garden at ECS, as an exercise in ecology, gardening, and pride in our school. The garden was planned as a bee pollinator habitat, is flourishing, and includes bee balm, chives, and Egyptian onions. Linda would like parents to realize that their children are already scientists and to encourage them to enjoy science.

Linda has two married sons and likes to say that she has “two boys and two girls,” as she loves her daughters-in-law as much as her sons. She is happy that they all live locally. In her spare time, Linda enjoys rug braiding and gardening.

Epsom Bible Church Awana Clubs

Awana Clubs at Epsom Bible Church will begin our 2012-2013 season on Thursday night September 13th. This will be our 26th year of having Awana Clubs and we are thankful for the things God has accomplished through this program in previous years.

For those of you who may not be familiar, Epsom Bible Awana Clubs are a branch of Awana International, which started in the early 1950s in a Chicago church and has grown into a worldwide program teaching boys and girls the Word of God in unique ways. Awana Clubs offered at Epsom Bible include Cubbies for girls and boys ages 3 and 4, Sparks for girls and boys in school grades K-2, as well as Truth and Training for girls and boys in grades 3 through 6.

Each Awana night consists of a game time, handbook time, and council time. Once or twice a month we plan a special theme night. We try to make our clubs as fun and exciting as possible. During Council time one of our leaders or a special guest speaker presents a message from the Bible, and awards are presented to those clubbers who have earned them for completing handbook work. If your children, or you, attended Awana in the past, you will find that most all of the handbooks have been recently updated.

Our Clubs are open to all children in the Epsom area, and we would love to have your children attend. You do not need to be a member of, or attend, Epsom Bible Church, for your children to attend. Come to Club on the 13th or any Thursday evening thereafter between 6:15 and 6:30 pm. Club starts at 6:30 pm and we end the evening at 8:00 pm.

Epsom Bible Church is at 398 Black Hall Road, approximately ¾ mile past the Epsom Central School on the same side of the road (look for the big sign out front). If you have any questions or would like more information call Kim or Paul Sanborn at 798-5050 or email at: [email protected].

Letter

To my constituents in Allenstown, Epsom, and Pittsfield:
This election season, lots of different organizations are pushing their scorecards of legislators, each with different criteria and a different set of bills counted. The oldest scorecards are two that I’m very familiar with, those from the House Republican Alliance (since 1998) and the NH Liberty Alliance (since 2004).

The HRA now issues voting recommendations for every bill before the Legislature, based on the Constitution and the Republican Platform, and counts every roll call. I’ve been active in reading the bills, writing and debating their recommendations since I was first elected. Naturally, my score has been very good: 93% and 98% for the last two session, both with excellent attendance.

The NH Liberty Alliance scores legislators on the votes they see as having a clear liberty position. I’ve worked with them on reading bills and making recommendations since 2006, and was honored as Legislator of the Year in 2010.

The Republican Liberty Caucus is a newer group, consisting of grass roots activists who not only recommend for or against certain bills, but also lobby the Legislature. They’ve endorsed me with a rating of 90% agreement with their principles of limited government, individual liberty, personal responsibility, free enterprise and adherence to the N.H. and U.S. Constitutions.

Cornerstone Action is a conservative group, which issued a scorecard this year after a period of not doing one. They’ve rated me at 95%. Granite State Taxpayers is New Hampshire’s oldest statewide taxpayer association. This year, for the first time, they surveyed all candidates for their positions on a list of issues related to taxes, government efficiency and business friendliness, and scored me as agreeing with their positions 100%.

Vulture Capitalism - Part II

1986: I was earning about $35,000 per year as a TWA flight attendant. My paychecks were cut in New York City, auto-deposited in Suncook Bank at Epsom Traffic Circle. My plans were to fly for at least another 15 years. This meant I would have been spending at least an additional $20,000 per year at Concord area craft shops, hardware stores, restaurants, car dealerships, movie theaters, furniture stores etc.

When “vulture capitalist” Carl Icahn cut my total compensation in half, I was thrilled to strike “his” TWA. He replaced us with “B scale” (low wage) workers. Eventually, all TWA workers were “B scale”. What had been 25,000 well paid TWA employees became 25,000 people struggling paycheck to paycheck. Vulture capitalism “trickled down” to another 100,000 employees of vendors, service providers, consultants, professionals contracted by TWA. Multiply TWA by “greed is good” mentality popularized in the 1980s; from Adelphi to Enron, Tyco to Worldcom and dozens more. This is not to mention the costs of individual bankruptcies, divorce, even suicide.

In my opinion, “vulture capitalists” are no better than “robber barons” of the 19th century. Give me an old fashioned business “man” any day. One who works hard, thinks long term, contributes to community, produces something. Vultures like Carl Icahn (and Mitt Romney) just pick at carcasses. Eventually, all they do is make money off money.

Fortunately, America still has great business men and women: Gary Hirshberg, Howard Schultz, Martha Stewart and Oprah Winfrey, just to name a few. If elected State Representative, I trust voters know who I will stand with and who I will stand against.

Nancy Heath
