Summer Reading Program Activities For Children

Continue At The Epsom Public Library

The library is currently having an Usborne Book Fair for children thru August 2nd. Stop by to view the great selection of children’s books. For more info about any of these programs call the library.

This year’s Summer Reading Finale will be on Monday, August 6th at 6:30 pm and features The Squam Lakes Science Center program “Creatures of the Night.” Join us for a fun evening for all ages with live animals, great information, refreshments and prizes as we celebrate our young readers. Reservations are encouraged. Call the library to sign up for this event.

Lizzie Borden – did she really kill her parents?

The library’s Adult Summer Reading Program will conclude with a presentation of “Lizzie Borden Took an Axe, or Did She?” with Dr. Annette Holba leading the discussion on Wednesday, August 8, at 7:00 pm. The library has received a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Council to make this presentation possible.

In 1892 Lizzie Borden, a 32-year-old single woman, was officially charged with the murder of her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts.  After four official criminal proceedings, Lizzie was acquitted of the murder.  The case is a mystery that has inspired documentaries, television movies, plays, musicals, poems, a scholarly journal and law school case studies.  Dr. Holba will review the facts and explore evidence that some suggest point to Lizzie’s guilt and others say exonerate her.

Dr. Holba, an assistant professor in the Department of Communication and Media Studies at Plymouth State University, is a former police detective.

Join us for our final Adult Summer Program.

Letter

The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution reads: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

In the wake of America’s current massacre, I would like to ask Speaker of the NH House Bill O’Brien, National Rifle Association’s CEO Wayne LaPierre and presumptive Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney a few questions.

Note, the word “guns” is not mentioned in the Second Amendment. Where is the “well regulated (Militia)” when a potential mass murderer can buy assault weapons at a gun show without a background check? Why is it you need a license to drive a car, but no license required to keep 100 round magazines of bullets? Do we all have the right to “keep and bear bombs”? According to your interpretations of the Second Amendment, why not?

As to that argument “guns don’t kill people, people kill people”? Bee! Ess! I know few people capable and able to kill one person with their bare hands. Few strong and wily enough to kill one person with a knife. Using a hunting rifle or defensive hand gun, how many people could be shot in a dark movie theater before the shooter is pummeled to the floor by patrons? Certainly not 82!

And the “stupidest” (gag me with a spoon): Mitt Romney stated “stricter gun laws won’t (prevent gun violence)... we have to change hearts.” (Using that kind of reasoning, why have traffic laws?)

My Friend Sally
Submitted By Veronica Specyalski

Perhaps you met Sally at one time or another. She’d talk about her cats, National Guard, AA meetings and how much she loved the camp up in Maine. She loved trees, flowers, wildlife and so much more including God. She always said, “May God bless you.” to everyone. Such a meek, gentle and generous soul she was.

Her last wish she expressed to me was to buy her a Living Bible, which is one you can easily understand. So, I did and read it to her every day that I visited with her. I realize now it wasn’t enough time spent.

Sally made friends easily everywhere from working at Halfpenny’s Bread Store to residing at Presidential Oaks Rehab. She will be sorely missed by all.

May God bless and keep you with Him forever, Sally!
